Right from the start, when you walk through the store there's always someone available to take your order. Without fail, I've never had to wait more than a couple minutes before someone says, "Bonjour, what would you like today?" From there, you're opened up to a smorgasbord of tasty, filling treats ranging from delicious croissants and pain au chocolat to savory ocean trout baguette. For sure the star of the show is the variety of freshly baked breads and pastries. Everything is made in house and it shows! Every bite is delicately balanced with the right amount of sweetness. There's definitely a reason there is always a line out the door on Saturday and Sunday mornings at Choquette. They've just got the great overall package expected of a quality French cafe.

When I finally had time to return to New Farm, I made sure I paid a visit to Chouquette. Needless to say, I had great expectations to what they had to offer! Their website had given me a taste of what was in store, and I was excited for the extensive variety of bread rolls, pastries, and cakes. When I approached Chouquette, I really had expected it to be much busier, with people sitting around and conversing with French coffees - but I found it rather empty. The glass cases had a few sandwiches, a few cakes and pastries, with a few bread rolls in the back shelf- not at all what I expected, actually. The place didn't seem particularly French (though I really couldn't say what is and isn't) - no warm ambience, cold chairs and decor inside and out, and their offerings were very meager, and mostly not particularly aesthetically pleasing compared to what they displayed online. It was a bit of a disappointment to find that I couldn't find the variety of items that I saw online, and everything was a bit pricy. I did have the orange chocolate cake, which looked the most appealing, and was actually really rich and delicious (good for sharing), but I was sorely disappointed with their bread roll, which was way too dry. I'm not sure if I should have tried anything in particular- and if I just missed out on some of the good stuff, but unfortunately, Chouquette didn't leave me daydreaming about France.

I was skeptical - mainly because it was right in our backyard, and I figured his big-noting was due to not bothering to try the competition. Turns out I was wrong to second-guess his statement. This is actually the best bakery I have ever been to. In my life. Having lived in Melbourne and Brisbane and travelled reasonably extensively. The thing that makes this place so special to me, is its unassuming nature. It's not fancy. The owners haven't spent thousands of dollars making the place look modern and slick and trendy - instead they continue to display their delectable fare in regulation glass shelving with windows. The name cards are handwritten, and the sandwiches are made in the back in clear view of the shop front. This is where I should start my review. The sandwiches. OH THE SANDWICHES! Thick cut bread - white or wholemeal, or grain. Stuffed with all manner of toppings - my favourite being the Ploughmans. This comes teaming with moist roast beef, piled high with delicious fresh salads and lashings of spicy, sweet relish. It's a joy to behold, and I can only ever eat half of one despite my best efforts. The pies and pastries are all here in all manner of flavours, but at this window my favourite is the bacon and cheese. Unlike many pies of the same name, this comes with chunky slightly chewy bacon pieces that are cut into different imprecise sized squares. The cheese is a welcome surprise when it hits, as it too is random in its size and placement throughout the mix. It's always chewy and smooth and mixes with the bacon and delicious beef and gravy mix perfectly. The pastry is golden and fluffy and makes the fresh flaky sound when you crunch into it that I love. The cupcakes are second-to-none. I have yet to get past their simple small buttery vanilla cupcakes with white icing and pastel coloured hearts. I will order four in a white cardboard box as a 'congratulations', 'I'm sorry' or 'just because' gift as I know the recipient will give me one. ;) They are so moist, so fluffy and so soft in the mouth it's like they were made by a cupcake fairy. The icing is perfection - too often you have to fight your way through thick layers of tasteless sugary plates atop your cake, but this is different. The perfect thickness, this icing has a slight crunch to it and it perfectly blends with the creamy buttery cake underneath. The staff are always cheerful if not run-off-their-feet, although I often wonder how they do it with no air conditioning - especially in the humidity and heat of a Brisbane Summer. The prices are a little more than you would pay elsewhere, but 100% deserved. You can purchase a variety of cold drinks including a variety of juice and trendy sodas (my favourite extra treat is the cherry cola). This place doesn't need to advertise at all besides its time-honoured chalk board on the footpath. It has relied on word of mouth, which has clearly spread like wildfire all over the city as this place is almost always PACKED. And for very good reason. My top tip is to grab your savory and dessert items, pick out a beverage (I hear they do great coffee too) and cart your feast to the nearby park. The kids will LOVE it and you will be enveloped by the bliss that only quality, fresh baked goods can bring.

As a result, nearly every Wednesday in the CBD and on the second and fourth Saturdays at the Powerhouse, I visit The Rice Hut at the Jan Power Markets for a little takeaway. Two sisters run this business together, and deliver fresh, tasty and healthy Vietnamese food across a short but solid menu. Rice paper rolls (everything from sizzling beef to pork to prawn to tofu) are rolled up on the spot with colourful ingredients, banh mi sandwiches (get them at the Saturday markets, as they use a different bread guy on Wednesdays - it's still good mid-week, but really great on the weekends) with pork, and rice noodle salads are all on offer, and there's not a thing on that menu I've not found to be well-intended, well-prepared and super-fresh. The CBD is growing in lunch options for Vietnamese (AJ's, Little Saigon, Pho Viet, Roll Shop, Quik Quack, etc), but when you can buy product from people who want to deliver only the freshest product and focus on making sure that everything they hand over the counter is something you'll love, that's a business worth supporting. The Rice Hut can be found towards the back of the CBD market near Bagel Boys, and on the aisle through the grass (not the sidewalk aisle) at the Powerhouse.

It looks like the secret is well and truly out about The Rice Hut every time I visit there is a long line out of the stand the Wednesday lunch crowd in the Brisbane CBD is crazy about this place, and with good reason. 6 words you need to remember to say "Three pigs Banh Mi sandwich please" And yes before you ask yes that is 3 different kinds of pork!! And we all know that is mathematically 3 times as awesome as one kind of pork. As for taste only explanation I can imagine is that Janette and Janine the (two sisters that own/operate the rice hut) go hunting for angles somehow capture their tears and eye drop a single angel tear into each sandwich for them to taste this good! I know in reality they use the freshest ingredients and a Vietnamese style not angel's tears making these sandwiches with tastes that just come together into something really special. I always order two of these Banh Mi intending to take one of them home for afternoon tea or supper and I ALWAYS end up eating both of them at lunch. Wednesdays regardless how bad things are at work is a day I look forward to because it is Banh Mi day! Do yourself a favour one Wednesday and check out the rice hut for lunch and when it turns out it is some of the best Vietnamese you have ever had.... I will say now pre-emptively... you are welcome. One quick tip with the long line and high demand for these you should rock up early, even with the long queue Janette and Janine work furiously to drill though the line and still somehow have a smile, a positive attitude and provide excellent service. 11 out of 10 for The Rice Hut!

I've been frequenting this place regularly and they'd have to have one of the best Bahn Mi offerings outside of West End and Sunnybank. Whilst more pricey than most places, the Bahn Mi here boast a load of filling and flavour - with the pork meatball offering being the best. The pies are also worth checking out, as is the wide variety of hot food in the cabinet at the front - steer clear of the spring rolls though. They ain't great.

These guys do a great one. I'd really love it if they'd add a hit of maggi sauce, and some sharper pickled veg. I'd also love it if they'd add the pate that is so common in Vietnam. But these are quibbles with what are a: cheap, b: great value and c: very tasty sandwiches. They'll add a really cracking chilli paste if you ask them. They also do great noodle salads for under $8. The meatball and spring roll is a personal favourite. I probably wouldn't rate them as a replacement for Mrs Luu's over in Miltion which is doing really great things with Vietnamese 'street' lunches of all persuasions. That said, Central Brunswick Bakery punches well above the weight of the standard small family bakery and is terrific value. I'm assured their cold ricepaper rolls are also lovely and they stock standard bakery fare as well.
