El Mezquite Grill - Chateubriand

I went to LaPaz last week for a fishing trip. The charter service included four nights at local…read morerestaurants as part of our package. They did not skimp on which ones they picked and always put their best foot forward. The highlight of these dinners was the El Mequite. I have not normally associated Mexican dining with great beef, but this place rivals any place I've been (e.g. Manny's in MN, etc.). And, by USA standards, it is very very reasonably priced. We had drinks and the shrimp appetizer to start off with. One platter was good for our party of five. We are all "retirement age" but peppy enough to go after game fish in the Sea of Cortez, so we carry an appetite. The shrimp were plump and not overcooked at all. They were served in a rich sauce as shown in the photo. Yum! We then went on to the main course, which was two platters of Chateaubriand. Each platter is meant for two people, but locals told us that the dual platters would easily serve the five of us. They were right! The pounds of center cut tenderloin and the accompanying vegetables and baked potatoes were more than enough for us after the appetizer and a couple drinks. It was delicious and we ate to discomfort. The dessert was flan and this was tasty and cooked fresh on premises that day. Great stuff! Service was perfectly attentive and, although there is not a lot of English spoken here, there is enough that us gringos were able to easily communicate what we wanted. When you are in LaPaz, this is the place if you are a meat eater!

It's a beautiful setting, their attention to detail is readily apparent. Modern and masculine with just enough rustic features to remind you they're cooking meat over flames, you immediately know that you're in for a treat. We had bone marrow served with refried beans (Who knew this was a killer combo?!?), Caesar salad (fresh and traditional), fish tacos (savory and snappy with zest), elote (maybe the highlight of the night, perfectly prepared tender corn oozing with flavor), whole snapper roasted over mesquite, rib eye (perfect medium rare with crispy rendered fat)...oh man...what a treat! Probably my 6th time here over the last decade and they've always been good. They now might be at their peak. It's expensive, likely one of the most costly meals you'll have in La Paz - we ordered wines, drinks, multiple apps, entrees and desserts - and spent around $100 US each for a dinner that would cost twice as much stateside. If you like fine dining, this place is an absolute must.

Thankfully this location was down the street from us and we decided to order take out from here. The pizza was delicious, we ordered pepperoni and olives and it was a perfect thin crust pizza. We also ordered a salad, which was also tasty. It barely had lettuce but had bell pepper, onions, tomatoes, olives and cucumber in a light balsamic dressing. The large pizza was a good size. My toddler has been so picky but this pizza did the trick so much we came back for seconds to dine in. The pizza was better than the first time. The classic lime margarita was refreshing. The classic spaghetti was also delicious, tomato sauce, ground beef, and shredded basil. The spaghetti pasta is much thicker than in the states but didn't mind. We would consider coming again. It's that good! The service is attentive, friendly and the ambiance was nice.

They have maracuya (passion fruit) agua Fresca that was delicious. We ordered the carne pizza and an orange salad. Both were delicious. The pizza crust was very thin, I I like it! Salad was fresh but dressing was a tad too sweet for my taste. I like the orange segments and dried fruit. Service was friendly with some English understanding. Restaurant was clean and about 15ish tables. My only issue was that it took a while for the pizza. But in Mexico, I'm learning to appreciate the pace. It's just hard to wait too long when I'm hungry
