This was another 'museum' located within the Hofburg complex. While perhaps not worth a long trip…read moreto visit by itself, since you're likely to be within a 5-minute walk during a trip to Vienna, this place is worth considering.
The real draw here is just the architecture and the setting itself. This is a high-ceilinged (4-story) Baroque showplace. It looks more like a movie set, or a small cathedral where they happened to install bookshelves. The ceilings are painted with classical scenes, there are statues in key atriums, and the books extend up along the entire walls. It was great for photography.
The library is laid out as a long rectangle, maybe 150 meters long and 15 meters wide. There are places where it gets wider also. But it isn't so huge that it will take very long to walk through. They also have displays along both sides providing a timeline of Austrian publications and history.
This is located in a courtyard near the royal apartments, but on the side away from the city center.
Again, if you are in the area and like beautiful architecture, this is worth a stop.
