Went in to exchange an item worth less than $10, the other employees at desk said it has to be done at front register, which had a line of about 5 people inside this tiny place, so I just browsed, picked another item to exchange with. Then the girl at front said they dont take exchanges from other stores. A great hardware store! Sure, you'll pay a tad more...but if you live close by, you'll gladly pay the few extra bucks rather than drive 5 miles to the closest home depot. They have an enormous selection for a small store. And if you need help, there are a few gents that really know there stuff. You can even talk in code, and they even understand "little thingy wingy". Parking has about 10 spaces, and it nearly always had room for one more. I've been many times, and always leave smiling (and with projects to do!). Word. read more

Terrible customer service. I stopped in to pick up something for repelling mosquitoes and when I asked a question about one of their products, the employee shrugged said "I have no idea how it works". Then she said, "take it or leave it," when I expressed my surprise at her cavalier dismissal of my need for her assistance to decide what product would be best to buy. When I asked for a manager, I was told he's at lunch. Well... I hope it was good. I'm happy to go elsewhere. No one helps you or asks if you need help. I went desperate to make copies of my front door key when manager wouldn't give a duplicate to my roommate. She said to go to Flam's but they were closed on a Saturday. The kid working was nice and easily made the copies of the front door then the woman came by and wouldn't let him give them to me because they were Do Not Duplicate keys - very confusing since the copies also said do not duplicate. She said she needed a letter from my manager to make them. My manager was across the country on vacation. Just insane. She wouldn't sell me the keys he had already made. I now have to share one front door key with my roommate until Flams is open. I'll be going back to Home Depot also from now on. Much better customer service and selection. read more

The reason retail is going south is poor customer service. Seriously, if you lie to your customers about what you have in stock, it'll come out. Being dishonest so that a person drives 12 miles one way to find out the desired item is not available is just wrong. Additionally, attentiveness while there was equally poor. read more

If I could give this place negative stars I would. What an experience. I was buying paint samples and cleaning supplies. The girl checking us out was rude from the get go. I said I had a certain number of paint cans in the cart and she snapped at me that she needed to handle the other items first. I was like okay and then it just got worse. She snapped at me about turning the paint can around and then I asked her to not be so rude, I was just trying to be helpful. I was then told that she's quitting this job because of people like me, and that she's tired of "this sh*t". She kept going on and on with a diatribe about how she hates people like and hopes I feel good about myself. I said she should quit then and then asked to speak to a manager. She called the manager over loudly on the phone saying she had "rude customers" at the front. Well this rude customer spent over $400 in your store and I would NEVER go back here, in fact I'm purchasing my full size paint elsewhere. read more

A woman with glasses running the door to regulate traffic inside was incredibly rude. Embarrassed me in a line of ppl by letting my spouse in first, which is fine, but then telling the man behind me to go next. I then told her I was also a patron with things to purchase and she kept demanding Qs if I was "with him!?" - my Spouse who she let inside. Had a last min production emergency. We needed 15 straw hats for tomorrow in Malibu and no one had them! Not only did no one have them but we we called ahead of time, companies like Home Depot and Lowes gave crappy customer service nor cared about checking the item in the store. I had to pull teeth getting to check and im pretty sure they just put me on hold for 20 mins, played a video game on their phone, and told me they didn't have them. When I gave up and have no more fight left in me, my Amazing wife reminded of Ace Hardware and told me to try, 1 more time. So... I call, and this angel from heaven named Michelle answer the phone. She was my therapist for a few mins, she listened patiently and after I was done rambling she offer to go above and beyond, by taking my number down, and sent me pictures of what she thought I was describing and needing. Like... Who even does that anymore ?! Who takes the time to actually listen to someone ramble about their problems and "why these hats are soooo freaking important" and then problem solve it by executing an above and beyond plan.. She didn't have to take my number and send me pictures. She could've just told me they had straw hats and to send someone to look at them. But, she didn't. She valued my time and understood me (or maybe it was her brilliant way to get me off the phone so she didn't have to play dr Phil anymore ) haha Either way, she made my night and made me realize there are still a few ppl that care about taking care of others !!! I'll be calling corporate about it this week as well. read more

Oh Ace, we had so many years together. My local hardware store which I would regularly spend about $1000 a year, and you lost me. It was over nothing as well! I tried to return a defective bunch of drywall archers that broke every time I used them. The manager, whom refused to come speak with me directly because he was too busy cutting glass, should be directly thanked for this lost customer. Not even a face to face explanation. I'm really glad to have a small, friendly hardware store in the neighborhood. It's not Home Depot with it's aisles of impersonal hardware, so you're not going to find everything here, but you also won't have to walk the length of three football fields to find what you need. Live near this place and visit often, I've had up and down service for 8 years, lately it's been good. But I know what to expect so I'm not going to complain about it, it's convenient and I can walk to it & enjoy the beautiful CA weather... but I am a bit surprised by some of the reviews and the lack of critical thinking/ over-abundance of ego in people, so I HAVE to comment. 1: It's a small, hometown ACE, so if you come here expecting Lowe's or Home Depot style service... then you're a CLOWN. 2: It's convenient, so if you'd rather use $2 in gas and time driving somewhere else in gas to save 20 cents on an item... then you're a CLOWN. 3: It's a mom & pop shop, so patronizing there is keeping LOCAL businesses open rather than having our community blocked off with big chain stores & luring more morons into the area, it's also a good thing for the economy. So if you "can't wait for them to go out of business" because you're a wussy and you couldn't handle some music that your entitled ass didn't like, or a high school worker who wants a job rather than be a lazy-ass corporate employee that you'll later complain about being a lazy-ass... then you're a CLOWN 4: They're small and have a lot of people coming in, this means they don't have the time to coddle your fragile ego and your desperate need to be hand-held when finding your item. If you need a screw, they will tell you where to find it, and expect you to "kind of" know what it at least looks like if they are really busy they can't hand-hold every customer through their entire visit. They will, however, certainly put you in a stroller like the child you are and walk you through everything if they aren't slammed busy. If you complain because they don't treat you like an infant, then you should re-think your level of competence as an adult and perhaps check your ego at the door. 5: If you don't like the place, just don't go there and quit whining and nit-picking about every little detail when someone doesn't treat you like the princess/prince that you obviously aren't. I went out of my way going to Studio City because the Ace in Encino was a total waste of time. I want to thank the employees here for taking time on the phone when I called to make sure they had the item I was looking for. The only I have is that there is no parking here. The lot is tiny, so I had to wait to find a spot but I was in and out of the store in less than 10 mins. Problem solved. Thank you Ace Studio City. You're out of the way but if I need anything that I can't get at the Encino location I will definitely call you. Extra points for the selection at this store. read more

So my roommate is ridiculous and she totally broke a key in the worst way imaginable. The key was all twisted and broken practically beyond recognition. Of course it was a work key and she would be thrown to wild dogs if it wasn't fixed for her boss in 6 hours, so we had our work cut out for us. We went into Ace Hardware because we Googled "key repair" and this was one of the few places open on a Sunday late-afternoon. After explaining the situation to the staff they called for the "Key Master" (they didn't actually call him this, but I liked the name and Ghostbusters, too). An older gentleman approached and gazed at the bifurcated brass corpse that once was a key. He breathed deep, examining the terrible state of our broken key and softly spoke, "I'll see what I can do." Once he fired up his key making machine, he performed what could only be described as a miracle so epic that it would make the great artisans Leonardo DaVinci and Raphael, crap in their graves. After a nail-biting 15 minutes, the "Key Master" handed us his masterpiece and spoke glibbly, "Hope it works for you." We paid like $2 or something and bounced. Guess what? The key totally worked. Next time you have a key-related catastrophe, check out this Ace Hardware. Cereally. PS - Josh L. seems like kind of a dbag for giving 2 stars based on the fluctuating price of gold and being unable to buy the appropriate screws needed for a job. read more

I'm giving two stars simply because it's easier to go to this Ace than drive the prerequisite six miles to the closest Home Depot. They have everything you need "in a pinch," but the prices are heinous and the customer service is notoriously awful. For instance - we just had our floors refinished; we also need to have our ceilings painted. Our floor guy told us specifically to "make sure the painter uses delicate painter tape so he doesn't remove the finish." I had never heard of 'delicate' painters tape so hopped over to Ace to help me out. Here is the exchange with Employee #1: Me: "Do you work here?" E1: "Yep." "can you let me know where you have delicate painters tape please?" "with the rest of the tape." "and where would that be?" (points in the general direction) NOTE: there are at least 50 types of painters' tape so I asked "Hey - which one is it?" "the blue one." I grab the blue one which says "original" right there on the wrapper. "Hey - this says original. Do you have delicate" "that's the right one." E1 walks off. Luckily, Employee #2 walks by right at that point. Me: "Excuse me, can you show me where you have the delicate painters tape?" E2: (pointing at the EXACT same roll) "It's right there." "this one says 'original,' i'm looking for delicate." "what are you painting?" "well we just had some floors refinished and. . ." "this doesn't leave adhesive, you'll be fine." "well the painter said specifically to get 'delicate' painters tape." "this will be fine." I subsequently comb through the rest of the rolls of tape and find my lone roll, a light blue tape clearly marked as 'delicate.' I return back to E2 and show him the tape, and if he could have cared any less he would have been asleep. As I pay at the register, I asked for a manager, "who is not here at the moment." No wonder, I'd be trying to avoid those lifeless, service-less trolls that hate their jobs, too. Crappy service, crappy prices, close by. Two stars. read more

I'm so glad that there's a hardware store in this neighborhood, and I'm so glad that this store is staffed with helpful, friendly people. When it comes to home improvement projects, I'm the kind of person who gestures when attempting to explain what I'm looking for. Conversely, I'll often use the wrong words to describe the thing I'm looking for- this is the type of hardware store that is friendly to my particular brand of ineptitude. Because I'm an idiot when it comes to constructiony things, I'd rather come to a small store with a lot of people in it who know things about constructiony things. Home Depot is NOT a friendly place if you're me, with the exception of the paint department or the garden section, both of which I can manage in. OSH is OK but it's sort of confusing and there's nobody around to help you out at all. So anyways, I came here once for a garage door opener, and they helped me figure that out. I came for mouse traps one time, but they only had ones that killed mice and I didn't want to kill anything, I was thinking of more of a catch-and-release type policy. I went there today for paint swatches, and so my girl friend could find some of those, um, like, hexy shaped things that go on the other side of a bolt. Or maybe a screw? Kind of like a washer...? We found them, but I have already forgotten what they are called. I'm giving them a solid four stars, because I like that they're small and local, but still bummed about the mouse traps. Incidentally, it turned out that I had rats and my landlord hired an exterminator to do all the rodent murdering for me :) read more

Yeah, I disagree with the previous reviewer. It is SO nice to have a local hardware store. I've found the staff at Ace to be helpful, attentive and knowledgeable. You want bad customer service? Go to Home Depot. Unfortunately, a small store like Ace can't physically stock everything, so you end up having to go to HD or Lowe's from time to time. But it's really nice to have a friendly, helpful neighborhood place available. Frequent this store and help keep neighborhood businesses around! read more

Horrible customer service. I asked an employee where I could fine measuring tape. The gentleman in an aisle pointed to a glass case and told me it wasn't locked. I walked over and grabbed what I needed and the female associate at the register told me in her snarky attitude to next time ask for assistance and that there are signs for a reason. She clearly had a lack of social skills and doesn't need to be the face - to - face representation of the company if she doesn't know people skills. I asked her to next time ask if I had been helped and she told me people just do why they want and sighed like I had inconvenienced her by talking. Such an ugly attitude to have in a retail environment. read more
