I'm somewhat hesitant to post this, because I know that if word gets out how great Matthew Galea-Pace is at highlights, it will become impossible to get an appointment in the future and I'm selfish like that. However, I know that finding a good colorist in SF is like finding a unicorn, so my conscience won. I met Matthew back in February of 2011 when I bought a coupon off of Bloomspot for him at a different salon. I've been back over a dozen times for both highlights and Brazilian blowouts and consider his work at full-price to be a bargain. He listens to what you want and executes it perfectly. For example, I'm always switching around my part, and instead of making me pick a side and stick to it, he did my hair so that I can part it on either side or in the middle and it looks great. Instead of using foil, Matthew hand paints the highlights on (aka balayage) which means my hair looks naturally sun-kissed, it grows out beautifully, and I don't have to live with awkwardly dark contrasting roots for 4 weeks. Plus he's fun to talk to. Before moving to SF, he used to do color for Madonna and Britney (pre-breakdown), and has some absolutely hilarious celebrity stories. He's also really efficient and can get you in, hair highlighted, shampooed, dried, and get you out the door in about 90 minutes; you never feel rushed -- which is always appreciated -- but you can get your hair done over a long lunch instead of having to take an entire afternoon off of work. TL;DR I would follow this man to Antarctica to continue having him do my highlights. The rest of the Brandon Hair Studio is lovely; the space is really welcoming, and is basically an art gallery. Just came back from getting a 'do-over' with Brandon after the fiasco with the previous stylist. I must admit I was extremely nervous but he assured me that we'll work together to make it a successfully and painless experience. In fact, I had a fun & informative 1.5 hrs at Brandon's Studio. Brandon is super funny and extremely talented individual. He explained his methodology and his approach for my particular needs. I was blown away with his knowledge and prudence (knowing when to stop). He gave me options and explained the pro/con for each. OK - can we say it people: FAB-U-LOUS! I just walked outside after my appointment with Trevor and I gotta say I'm sooooo diggin' the hair!!!! My walk back to the office I actually felt like strutin' - I felt like a friggin' runway model! (Enter Stayin' Alive soundtrack here!) Anywhoo - I got the Brazilian Blowout today and I just cannot believe how sleek and healthy-soft my hair is. I've got obnoxiously inconsistent hair. We discussed what I wanted for my hair and he had great feedback. He really took the time to study the length and condition of my hair before starting the process. I wrote a review here last December about the Brazilian Blowout and many of the other reviews were written by people equally as happy and amazed as me, but this review is for Brandon's superb hair cutting talents. I have been growing my hair out and had specific instructions to simply add texture, slithering, and change the overall shape without making my hair look shorter in general. Brandon understood exactly what I wanted and masterfully achieved it !! Every single feature of his artistic creation is visible in the final result. I've observed his more "traditional conservative" cuts in the past but am most amazed by his skill to produce a more "fun, wild" result (try...converting a jewfro into a Japanese anime type style). Got a much-needed haircut here (6 months since the last one!) with the somewhat new stylist, Mary Alice. I told her that I would like something "different" with my long hair. In the past, stylists have always interpreted this vague wish as a cue to do yet another variation on the "long layers" theme. Mary Alice was the first of the bunch (and I've been to several local high-end salons) to actually try something *new*, and she gave me an adorable, longer-in-the-front/shorter-in-the-back, slightly below shoulder length cut that I LOVE. I appreciated that she took my needs into consideration when designing the haircut (e.g., I need to be able to wear my hair back for work, I wanted it to be low maintenance), but still gave me a totally different, cute look. Plus, the blowout looked great, and I was ready for a dinner out with friends immediately after. The salon has a really pleasant, laid-back vibe, and everyone there seems to be quite friendly. Cost of a cut with Mary Alice is normally $80, but they gave me a 20% off discount for being a new customer, so it was only $64 (plus tip). I can't begin to say enough about Brandon and the incredible work he does. Not only can he cut hair better than anyone in SF (well, I guess I can only speak for Men's cuts), but his professionalism is off the charts. To quote Brandon directly, "I will not let you leave my chair unhappy, no matter what it takes." Brandon has cut my hair for 3 years now, whether I had short hair, or my brief attempt at growing my hair longer. He was my stylist when he cut hair in the Castro, and when he set off on his own, I had no regrets about following him. Now, he has one of the best looking hair salons in SF, with amazing art installations, and a convenient location downtown. I would also note, that you will not go wrong getting your hair done by any of the stylists here, as Brandon is a perfectionist, and would never hire anyone who didn't have amazing talent. I got a brazilian blowout with Brandon here and although my hair is straight all day which is great NO PUFFINESS :D ...BUT it looks a little greasy after a while! I was told that it would look shiny and if shiny means greasy then it does! if I where to wash it multiple times a day it would look great all the time but I don't so I'm stuck with it looking not so great for the other half of the day. *update* After a while it no longer looked greasy and I discovered that you can scrunch up your hair and it looks really nice ...like a nice wave I love it. read more

From what I can tell, most of the reviews for Brandon Hair Studio are by girls, so here's a review from a guy's point of view -- a semi-stylish guy that is -- at least I would like to think so. Yes, guy's do need hair cuts too, and I'm not talking that $15 Supercuts thing. I'm talking about a real man's haircut. Summary: Great place! Might seem a bit pricey, but definitely worth it in terms of quality, skill, and experience. Definitely recommend Anthony. If you have typical thick, asian hair like me, it's hard to find someone who knows how to cut your hair well, but Anthony did a great job! Anyways, I moved to the city about a year ago and have been struggling to find a solid hair stylist, seeing as how all haircuts in SF are easily $30+ with the quality of Supercuts, or worse, like your sibling, or parent, or that over-enthusiastic friend who just loves to cut hair but isn't good at it. I found Brandon Hair Studio via Yelp, decided to give it a shot, and I've gone there to get my hair cut by Anthony twice over the past 4 months and will continue going back for the foreseeable future. Anthony's personality and styling skills are both amazing -- not only is he friendly, energetic, and enthusiastic, he is skilled, understands hair, how hair grows, how to cut hair, and how to cut your hair the way you like it just based on looking at how it has grown since the last cut. Definitely worth my time and money to come here! The whole process for me, from pre-wash trimming, wash and mini scalp massage, actual hair cut, post-cut wash, and post-cut-post-wash finalizations took around 45 minutes both times, and although the price of $55 is a bit more than I am used to paying, I'd have to say it is 100% worth it for the stylist, environment, and finished product. As a guy, you might think that $55 is way too much, but let me tell you, you, and those girl(s) you are actually getting the hair cut for can definitely tell the difference between a cut by Anthony (and probably other hair stylists) at Brandon Hair Studio and a $15 Supercuts, a $20 random salon, or even a $30 well-reviewed hair salon. I know I could. I've always opted for the cheaper hair cuts, and I've never been satisfied because parts of my hair just don't grow evenly. I had accepted the fact that maybe that was just how my hair was, but then after having Anthony cut my hair, even after a month, I didn't see any of the weirdness and my hair was blended almost perfectly and grew smoothly. For comparison, not to say bad things about this place, but I went to a really popular place in Alameda to get my hair cut just this past weekend because it is so highly reviewed and my friends rave about it, and it costs around $25, but boy could I tell the difference in the skill and final result of that haircut and the ones from Brandon Hair Studio. I know I sound like I'm selling you on this, but that's how much a difference I can see. And I don't even have long hair like a lion. I just have normal, asian, thick hair, which a lot of stylists don't know how to cut. If that isn't enough to get you to give this studio a shot, maybe this anecdote will. First time I went here I needed a haircut because I was going to Vegas the weekend of and wanted to, well, you know, look good :) Turns out, the person next to me getting his hair cut by Brandon was also going to Vegas, and well, you know, wanted to look good too. Coincidence or genius? So that's all cool. I go back to the office, and my coworkers that are guys go like "you spent that much on a haircut??", and then my coworkers that are girls go like "your hair looks good! perfect length and style!". Nuff said. I'll let you decide which one matters more. So then I actually go to Vegas, and damn. My bros tell me that my hair looks good, never has that happened before. I could say that it was because I'm just so awesome at styling my hair, but that would be silly :) I like to give credit where credit is due. Got a lot of stares on the street that week too :P Not only that, I go home to see my family a week later, and after the initial "did you really spend that much?", I've gotten compliments on how my hair looks for the next month from them (e.g. "it really does look better than your old hair cuts"). To be honest, my hair grows relatively fast and I like to maintain a relatively short hair style, so I probably won't be coming here for every haircut. But at least I know that if I need a good haircut for a special occasion that I now have a hair salon that I can trust to dapper me up like Don Draper. read more

Damian has been my hair artist for a few years now and I've followed him through multiple salons because he's so good. I love his cuts because he is a perfectionist. He is a master with his scissors and takes his time to make sure every hair is perfect by the time you leave the salon. Also, Damian is never boring. He encouraged me to grow out my hair and was able to guide me through the process. That year-long period taught me to love my curly hair, thanks to Damian's awesome suggestions and cuts. I went to Brandon a few weeks ago for the Brazilian Blowout Treatment. I've had this treatment done before and I was so much happier with the results this time around! Brandon was absolutely meticulous with the process from start to finish which, I can now say based on the results my first time, makes a difference! That's actually a side note to the reason I'm writing this review, however. While Brandon was applying the solution to my hair he noticed how unevenly it was cut. (I had recently purchased a SocialLiving deal for a $39 haircut elsewhere.) He gently pointed this out to me--although there was nothing gentle about the way my hair had been mutilated. Seriously, he held a section up for me to see and it was in the shape of a series of high rise buildings; I probably could have done a more even job myself. I was mildly horrified until he offered to fix it--for FREE. He had me come back in a week later--after working around my very cramped schedule-- and he gave me a complimentary haircut. I'm thrilled with the way it looks now, both in texture AND style. I highly recommend Brandon for the Brazilian Blowout or a haircut; I couldn't be happier with the way my hair looks now. And he's a warm and extremely competent hair stylist to boot! In case anyone is wondering, the salon who cut my hair before I went to Brandon was Salon Baobao. Let me start, as a guy who doesn't know hair all that well, and my instructions are very vague that when I go to most places I end up with a hair cut that is less than desirable. However, here it seems to open up options and its fun and interesting to see what I come out with, and it is always something that looks good and easy for me to maintain. I have been coming here for over a year now from when they were back on Market street. The very first time I came to Brandon, he gave me the best hair cut I have had. He definitely does a good job and kept me coming back. As of late he has been quite busy with his bookings and I am quite the procrastinator. I usually do not schedule a haircut until i absolutely need it, and with Brandon getting more customers he is usually booked. Luckily he does a good job picking his staff, and the most recent visit I came in and was helped by Sergei. I set my vague requirements and he worked with it and did an awesome job. One star to Amanda: that woman is a train wreck. I saw her once and she was obviously hungover, complained the whole time and was just generally unpleasant. But what really tipped the scale is that she uses this horrible device called a highlight board that's basically a big plastic flat board that she RAMS into your head to paint the highlights on. Maybe it's possible to use this stupid board in a way that isn't horrendously painful, but the way she does it is pure unmitigated torture. Especially when she's complaining and/or gossiping with the other people there and thus looking away as she shoves the board into your head even harder (since she's not looking at you and clearly doesn't give two shits in the first place). And then after all that, she lopped short layers into the back of my hair when all I'd said about the haircut was that I wasn't particular and all I cared about is that I don't like short layers in the back because I find them hard to style. Once she was done and i saw them, i told her I didn't like them and reminded her I said not to do that. She just shrugged and said well, she thought it was fine. I left that appointment with the worst headache ever (from over an hour of having the hard plastic board shoved into my head) and fuming about how terrible it all was. I swore I'd never be back. But... It's a pain in the butt to find a new place and I decided to give it one.final.chance. I've been coming for about a year and it's been going downhill but generally ok, so I decided to go back and see Brandon. I saw him when I first started coming. He's talented, but always, always late and clearly has an ego. But I decided it would be worth it and booked an appointment. Turns out the day of my appointment, my office has a box at the Giants game. I peel myself away from our awesome seats early to make it on time to my appointment. And in what shouldn't have been a surprise to me at all, Brandon was late. The horrible Amanda signed me in with a huff like how dare I bother her and told me Brandon was smoking. I sat there for 15 minutes after my appointment should have started. And then though f it. Life is too short to tolerate crap customer service. Brandon called 25 minutes after my appointment to ask where I went. I said I left because he was late. He said he was only ten minutes late. I said no, that's not true, I waited 15 minutes. And he claimed he had been in the process of mixing up my hair color. Yeah ok... You haven't colored my hair in 8 months and we hadn't talked about what I wanted yet, so that's either a total lie or just a very weird thing to do. I'm over it. read more

Next to the 5 star rating I just selected, in italics it says "woohoo! As good as it gets!", and this could not be more true. I've had many a terrible haircut in my day, largely due to my unruly cowlick that makes me ineligible for the majority of hair styles, however damian changed all that. I came to him to cut and style my hair for my wedding, and as I sat in the chair he assured me that he could handle my cowlick, and indeed he could! Shears and spraybottle formed a blur as he danced nimbly, rapidly, delicately around my head, trimming just the right amount here and there, applying his hair-crafting wizardry, forcing my normally uncooperative hair into submission. The end result: I walked down the isle with the best haircut I've ever had, with people constantly commenting how sharp I looked. It was all thanks to Damian! read more

I went to Brandon's recently to get my boyfriend's hair cut. He had really long hair that he had been growing for 7 years and got a new job that made him cut it. When we got there he was nervous and when we showed everybody how much he had to cut, they were very sympathetic. They offered us a beverage which is very nice considering I thought my boyfriend was going to be sick (very attached to him hair) And they even let me go with my boyfriend and record the cut itself. Everybody is friendly and funny, I love this group of people. Damian was the gentleman that cut my boos hair. He specializes in curly hair which is awesome because not everybody knows how to do that. He tried to keep my boyfriend calm and relaxed by talking to him about different things (my boyfriend wasn't being too talkative so we talked while he cut) I brought in a picture of how I thought it would look nice, he agreed and in the end I was in tears by how handsome my baby looked. We have been together for four years and I have never seen him with short hair! He even liked it which surprised me, and liked it a lot. The next day we went into the bathroom and styled his hair is so many different styles, he was having a blast. They did his hair so good I made an appointment for myself the next day. Everybody remembered me, asked how my boyfriend was doing and if he still liked it. I got my hair layered and straightened by a gentleman by the name of Sergay. He was very friendly and did a great job. The only thing was he was a little rough with my hair when he was straightening it. Other than that great experience. I recently re-located from NYC and had been going to the same stylist for 10 YEARS! I was bummed that I had to find somebody new because I know what I like and I tried a few different stylists and nobody got it... UNTIL Brandon. Listen up men... Brandon knows how to cut a guy's hair. He's an ace with the clippers AND with the scissors. Few stylists can do both, but Brandon can scissor and barber to give you a great natural looking cut that's stylish for a man without being overdone or "coiffed".... and it will last for a month or more. The first time I went to Brandon my hair was a mess and my spirits were quite low. He not only took as much time as necessary to decide what would by best for my hair and for me, but he also explained what he was planning to do step by step. My hair is NOT easy to work with and Brandon has transformed it into shiny, healthy hair that I can feel good about. I was walking out of work today and decided I need a haricut RIGHTNOW. I did a quick Yelp search and found Brandon Hair Studio was right nearby. They graciously squeezed me in for a 7pm haircut with Amanda. She could have said no and gone home for the night...I'm so glad she didn't! I felt disgusting when I walked in, but was promptly greeted by the friendly guy at reception and offered a glass of wine. Amanda, my stylist, gave me an amazing shampoo/head rub following our consultation. She listened to what I had to say and offered her professional opinion and I LOVE my haircut. I feel like being redundant after so many great reviews, but I'll share my experience. As most of us, we have a hard time finding someone we can trust our hair, and it's not different with me. My hair dresser is in Brazil and every year I get a hair cut when in Brazil, and trim in the US, but this year I'm not going back to Brazil, so it was a very fortuitous opportunity when I found their deal on Living Social. It was about a month ago, i had my appt with Trevor. From the first minute, he was very friendly. By the end of the treatment I felt like hanging out with a friend, was just so much fun! I told him what i was looking for, explained how my hair was daily and he just listened without trying to teach me about my own hair (like some other hairdressers like to do). I told him how I'd like to change my hair without losing to much length and he respected every inch. The Kerastase treatment was divine, a month later and my hair is still soft and smooth. He suggested a product, but I told him I couldn't afford that time and he understood, wasn't pushy at all. Brandon stopped by during my treatment and he seems very nice as well. As Trevor cut my hair, I was apprehensive about the result, they both were very encouraging, and I have to say, I agree, my hair looks fabulous! It's no wonder this place has a solid 5 star score! Had a Brazillian blowout by Trevor and it is by far the best I've ever had. I had my first one a little over a year ago and have been getting them consistantly every 3 months or so. My hair is naturally so curly, that the longer it gets, the shorter it looks, aka it is a fro and a half. So you can imagine this treatment impresses me because I never was a fan of going strictly straight. I enjoy having hair that air-dries silky smooth and soft without compromising some wave and a little twirl. This version of the brazillian blowout that they do at Brandon Hair Studio has had the most impressive effect on my mop so far. Also I really appreciate that Trevor gave me 5-star treatment with the knowledge that I used a living social deal and that I am moving out of state in a matter of days. Plus Mario, the receptionist squeezed me in last minute after a cancellation with the knowledge that I was desperate to get in before leaving the state. If I were them I would not be as eager to please someone who paid half-price and was one foot out the door but they treated me with the same kindness as a full-paying guest who saw them regularly, and for that I am much obliged! Wow! First of all, the studio is downtown right next to Bart and Muni. It's very accessible, pleasant, and comfortable. Second, Brandon is an amazing stylist. As we spoke, he revealed he had been cutting hair for 20 years; and it shows. I was blown away by my cut. You can definitely tell that he treats cutting hair as an art. To me this is invaluable, considering all the horrendous cuts I've gotten in the past. I told him what I wanted and he hit it on all cylinders. All week I've gotten nothing but compliments on my hair. It's nice not having to guess if the cut is going to be great or sub par, because it's going to be great. Brandon is great.
