This was the first botanical garden in Sweden starting in 1655 and later the home and garden of…read moreCarl Linnaeus (swedish nobility name: Carl von Linné.) On the website it says "It is laid out in the French Style and restored following Linnaeus' and Carl Hårleman's design from 1745." The university took the time and effort to restore the gardens according to their original drawn up plans and I think that's pretty cool! There are three gardens that are associated with the famed "father of modern botany" in Uppsala today that you can visit. The three gardens include this one, the Upsalla Botanical Garden (near the castle) and the Linnaeus' Hammarby (his old summer house.) This one, The Linnaeus' Garden, is the oldest of the three. It has a cover charge for entrance to the garden itself and a walk through of his original home--that has now been converted into a museum and maintained separately by The Swedish Linnaeus Society. I thought it was an enjoyable visit and liked seeing a small piece of history kept up here. It's not the most exciting museum i've ever visited, but If you like history and are in the area it's a nice little landmark to stop by. I thought a few of the plants were a bit overgrown and not as well taken care of as they could've been in Carl's time, but it's understandably not been in professional use for a couple hundered years. ;) The garden was a lot smaller than anticipated, and is really more about the historical preservation of a landmark other than really being wowed by the enormity of it. I also did not take the time to use the audio tour and was a little underwhelmed by the museum in the house itself. It might have been more useful to have actually listened to the descriptions of each exhibit in their entirety. We just did not have the time to spare to do so. It looks like there are a few events that happen throughout the spring, summer and fall at all three gardens. We were not at any of them, but there was an "Apple Days" event going on at The Linnaeus' Hammarby estate that had apple picking and juicing on site. I was a little disappointed we went to this older home/garden to visit instead of planning ahead to go to the the summer house festival--it sounded pretty entertaining! Check the website for events if your planning on a visit so you don't miss out like we did!! Was this place worth a whole 60 SEK (about $7-$8)? I think so! It's not much money and I certainly wouldn't mind paying such a small sum towards the university just to take a peek! I'm sure it's costly to upkeep everything and they brought back to life something that is from 1745! That is pretty enjoyable in itself.

I liked that the museum had so many pieces of original furniture and it wasn't all behind distant…read moreglass cases. Even on a Saturday I found myself alone in the first floor of the house of the greatest botanist that ever lived. His bed in front of me as well as a variety of things that used to belong to his everyday life. I felt transported to another time.

The staff on the other hand was so rude it was ridiculous, arrogant and no service mind whatsoever, the only one that was smiling was the guy that washed the dishes.

For those who think Rosendals Trädgard is great, you will be totally enamored with this place!!! I…read moreactually think this is one of the greatest places I've been to in the Stockholm area! Ulriksdal Slottsträdgården is a castle garden, cafe, shop, indoor greenhouse and outdoor self-picking field of produce and flowers (when in season). It sits adjacent to Ulriksdal Slott (where you can get a tour of the castle museum!) and the castle's park and Orangerie. I recommend visiting everything together. The day we spent out here was as close to heaven as you can get while residing in the Stockholm area during summer! Absolutely lovely!!! I can't wait to go back again this August! =) =) =) It's an easy drive here that takes about 15-20 minutes from the city center. There are also buses that come out here, but it's a bit more of a trek that way--You'll have to stop at "Ulriksdal begravningsplats" and walk for a while, the rest of the way. However, I think that your going to want to drive if your looking to do some shopping. They sell everything from a full grown trees to small flowers and everything in between. You can take an Uber from the city center, but that will cost you a pretty penny! The greenhouse is fantastic! It houses some of the most wonderful things inside. The cafe inside of it is also lovely. They serve a full vegetarian lunch buffet on weekdays for 155sek. The buffet's different dishes are always made from seasonal ingredients. They are also organic and locally grown as much as possible. I also like that you can schedule a delightful afternoon tea here on a Saturday or Sunday. They serve scones, pastries and sandwiches, all homemade (and mostly organic too.) You can choose between several different organic/fair trade teas to accompany your treats as well. Which, is all great! My favorite part of the day out here was a visit to the self-picking field and orchard! It was beautiful!!! A perfect vacation out of city life for the day! I thought the little hut with swinging daybeds for the occasional visitor to lounge on were exceptionally cute. You can't beat a day of cutting flowers, eating good food and lounging around. You have no idea what a luxury it is to pick your own bouquet of flowers out in the sunshine until you actually get to go out and do it! I highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend a visit in August! Tip: Make sure to keep an eye on the their website for when the prime picking time is. I came back in a span of a few weeks between August and September and it was dramatically picked over towards the end. Note: The only real complaint I would have about this place is that the cafe's interior feels a little cramped, unimpressive and disconnected from the wonderful ambiance of the green house and self-picking fields. If they could find a way to clean it up and decorate it more luxuriously and thematically (even renovate or relocate to another structure with a lot of windows and outdoor space) I think it would improve the situation.
