Millstone, Saturday night! We stroll in, feeling spontaneous and ready for adventure. The hostess…read moregreets us with a smile and immediately hits us with: "15-20 minute wait." Cool, except... half the tables were sitting there just waiting to be used. We ask about eating at the bar--nope, "not allowed." We walk in to order a drink while we wait and people are happily feasting at the bar. Before we could even sip the drinks we ordered, our table was suddenly ready. It was like the restaurant gods flipped a switch: awkward start over, let the good times roll. From then on, the night was smooth sailing. Our server was a rockstar. Attentive, friendly, and somehow always appearing right when we needed them. Now let's talk food. The mac and cheese. Oh. My. Goodness. Forget everything you thought you knew about mac and cheese. This wasn't a side dish--it was a life event. Creamy, cheesy perfection that deserves its own fan club. I'd come back just for that bowl of happiness. So yes, the beginning was a little sitcom-worthy, but Millstone redeemed itself in a big way. Great vibe, great food, and a must-visit in downtown Richmond. If you haven't been, stop depriving yourself and go already.

It was slow on a Wed evening and I felt relaxed to enjoy my dinner and book. Service was attentive and efficient, while mindful that I was clearly in no rush. Highly recommend the Old Fashioned - it was perfection. Added filet to my salad and ordered a side of Mac & enjoyed every bite!

It's one reason I don't go out for breakfast ~ I can make a pretty good breakfast at home. No use paying someone to do something I can do. So, going into Jackson's restaurant, a mom and pop restaurant specializing in home cooked style food, I had my doubts. Walking up to what resembled a school cafeteria lunch line only furthered my doubts. And, seeing the sheer number of different options sitting out behind the glass window only furthered my suspicions. Look, I was wrong. The food here is really good. The service is super friendly and helpful. I was so overwhelmed by all the choices I just told the lady behind the glass counter to pick me something. She obliged with a kindness that made me think she knew me somehow. She chose the chicken and dumplings, beef stew, apples, and two different types of corn bread. Now, I thought initially, and she even admitted, that the chicken and dumplings/beef stew mix was a little unorthodox, but that they were both so good I had to try them. Both were fantastic. The apples were awesome. I liked both types of corn bread. When I got up to leave, she called me over to the counter and said that since it was my first time there, I'd get a free dessert. You all, I was too full to even try. The food here is both tasty and filling. I was in Richmond for a conference at Eastern Kentucky University. So it was really convenient to stop by. But I'd say that even if you're remotely close, it's worth a visit. Don't, as I did, judge a book by its cover.

After a nice day of hiking in Red River Gorge, seeing Natural Bridge, taking the sky lift, and…read morealmost falling several times, the Fat Man and his wife were feeling a little tired and hungry. We decided to venture over to Miguel's Pizza and see what offerings they had in store. Miguel's Pizza, a favorite among hikers and climbers, offers a variety of options, including healthy choices, and has a casual, rustic atmosphere in a historic building, with both indoor and outdoor seating. You can order pizza by the slice to mix and match, or order it whole. We ordered two slices of pepperoni. The crust was thin and crispy, but still had some good chew. However, it lacked flavor and was slightly dry. The crust reminds me of a frozen, pre-made crust. The sauce was thin, slightly sweet, but lacked flavor beyond the sweetness, and the slice could have used more sauce to help bite into the crust. The cheese was light on the pizza and lacked any pull, almost as if it were from a bag at the store. The pepperoni was thin and cut into different sizes, with an adequate amount on each slice and a nice amount of grease, heat, and chew. This was enjoyable on the pizza. We also ordered a couple of Margherita slices. The crust again had a good crunch but lacked flavor. There was a nice toast on the bottom. The cheese, as before, was light on the pizza, which is fine, but no pull again. The sauce was maybe a little lighter on these slices and lacked much flavor. The tomato and basil were fresh, but there wasn't much of either on the slices, leaving the pizza bare and us wanting more toppings. Miguel's menu offers several pizza options they specialize in, a build-your-own option, and salads, pasta, soups, and sandwiches, with options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They also offer beer and wine options with soft drinks. The Fat Man says that Miguel's Pizza is NOT Fat Man Approved.
