I was there yesterday (2/15/12). As it has been some time since my last visit (about a year) I was looking forward to sighting in a new .22 rifle/scope combo. I was pleasantly surprised to see how busy it was around the lunch hour. I asked a patron if the range was busy and she indicated the rifle range only had 1 other shooter. Walking in it looked to be well stocked and enough employees to help all the customers. Owning and operating a firearms range and shop has to have more challenges than say owning a pizza parlor. The pistol range was full. I walked up to the sales counter and the gentleman asked if I was there to shoot. What caliber and how long did I want on the range. Very polite. I did get sticker shock at the cost for range time but it is their toy and if I want to play that is the cost. Actually, the slightly higher cost probably does a couple of things. Keeps the riff-raff shooters to a minimum and produces less wear and tear on the equipment. So from the range owners perspective, they probably have not seen a significant decrease in range revenues while they have seen less wear and tear on expensive range equipment. After about 45 minutes I could "taste" the foul air. While DA does have a better than average ventilation system i could tell there was room for improvement. I did experience a small malfunction on the Remington 587. The bolt lever pulled out. Kinda odd, but not being familiar with the action I asked for help from the gunsmith. It took him a minute to figure it out, reinserted it without too much trouble and sent me on my way...that was very cool. For all of you that felt your experience was less than stellar customer service people are only human. We all want a good customer experience. If I was the range owner I would take not of all the feedback. Afterall you get the customer in the door once, getting them back...well, thats the secret. read more

I went in to look at rental guns. Interested in trying one or two to help narrow down the choices. Several surly men glaring at me, but no offer for assistance. The male with red hair looked and acted annoyed with my questions about gun rentals. I think I'll try another place when I go to rent. read more

These people at this store are condescending and rude!! They treat people like they are stupid and don't know anything. I have walked into this store a few times and have had people behind the counter look at me and never offer help. Then when they do they act like they don't know what you are talking about! I hate DA and will never go back. read more

Poor customer service. I was patiently waiting for service from the GUN SNOBS behind the counter whom were too busy chatting with each other to acknowledge the customers waiting to SPEND MONEY. I always choose to support local business even if the price is higher than an online purchase.Double action had what I wanted but for lack of service I ended up going home and purchased my firearm online and saved money. read more

good place for guns, ammo, reloading supplies, ar parts. they have indoor pistol and rifle ranges as well

My fiance and I tried this place out for the first time with a friend of ours. There was a deal on Groupon for two people so we purchased two of them. They paid for two lanes for one hour each. We also purchased extra ammo to fulfill that hour. When we were called up we were only given one lane. When we asked for our second lane we were told we would have to share one. Then a half hour later, we were rudely told that our time is up. When I tried explaining to him that we had paid for an hour he replied with "No you didn't. You paid for a half hour." and pushed me aside and grabbed our equipment, completely ignoring me as I'm trying to talk to him. So we went out to talk to the person that checked us in and he explained that they don't have their other range open today so they are only doing half hour sessions. So how is this my problem and why weren't we told this at check-in? Their solution was to give me a coupon for a half hour lane rental. Okay that makes up for the half hour on one lane, but what about the other hour on the second lane we weren't given? This place is very poorly run with extremely rude and unprofessional staff. I will never be back. Close Quarters in Utica is definitely worth the further drive. read more

I have also had a poor experience at this location. It depends on who you get to help you. The older gentleman which was likely the manager went out of his way to help me find what I wanted. Every time I was assisted by the "red haired guy" with the acne issue, I was disgusted by the comments that he made. I am a white guy so I can only assume that he thought that since I was in the army that I shared his racist viewpoint towards people from the middle east. Unfortunately this guy had no problems saying these things in front of my 9yo son either. I just stopped in there for a rimfire rifle for my son. Oddly enough I ended up ignoring his ignorance and completing the transaction. After giving it some thought, I dont think I will return there. I do realize that the sales people need to be on alert for the morons that exhibit unsafe behavior, bu t that shouldn't mean that they should be disrespectful, unprofessional and downright rude. Particularly when the person they are speaking with is not egging them on like I have observed. Although some of their sales people are actually quite good and helpful, the fact that they tolerate this loud mouth employee and let him say what ever offensive comment he wants will keep me from returning. Their selection is great, their range is awesome, but as long as they employ people that are that unprofessional I wont return and I wont suggest that anyone else does either. What a shame. read more

DO NOT PRE-PURCHASE A PACKAGE OR GET THE GROUPON! Because if you're like me you'll drive 45 minutes away to use it just to get turned away. The customer service at this range was terrible. After being customers 30 years, Mitch and Al let one of their sons run this place now and he decided it'd be cute to set their clocks fast so that if you get there on time to rent a lane, they can tell you you're too late. They then use excuses such as the employees are over worked and need to get out on time and bars and restaurants set their clocks fast all the time so why shouldn't they? When I mentioned we were long time customers with a relationship with the owners he hung up on me. Bottom line I called in advance to make sure all was good, no one mentioned the clocks were set fast, and when we got there we got turned down at 6:57pm to rent a lane. No one cared that we'd come from Waterford and were actually on time, you'd think they'd make an exception since it's no ones fault but their own that they set their clocks fast. Now I've wasted 25 bucks and an hour drive to be left with nothing but a bad taste for this place. Won't be back! read more

After purchasing 2 pistols and spending a good amount of time on the range with pistols and rifles here over the last 2 years, I recently discovered another gun shop/ range that is hands-down better in every way than DA, and swore I would never set foot in their store again. Unfortunately, due to time constraints and wanting to shoot with other family members, we gave DA another go...boy do I regret the decision! I know there are a couple of employees who are knowledgeable and helpful, but the guy who helped us was condescending and borderline confrontational; must be in the business for the money, because it was obvious it wasn't for the love of the sport or the camaraderie within the shooting community. Had some kid on the range next to me uncase his rifle behind the firing line and point it right at me, had to tell him "whoa" and point him to the firing line! Wasn't a very fun time. Definitely "sticking to my guns" this time, will never go back. read more

Again like the one poster said, nice place, having a longer range is great. Range ammo prices are fair. Go their, shop, shoot and leave. If you want to chew the fat, try another customer, most of which seem realy cool. Join a club or bring a buddy if you want to socialize. Don't expect the staff to learn your name or treat you as a friend just because your spending money or even if your a regular. If you have worked in retail, you know somedays it just sucks. Don't get too offended, if they treat you bad or act cocky, just blow it off. Or just laugh like you thought they were joking. I've been their at least 20 times now, probably spent close to 2 grand and they are always cool, but have no interest in small talk. They don't know my name and they don't really want to know it. I am just one of the hundreds of peole they wait on every week. I don't get the impression they are on commision. Don't expect car dealership type customer service from everyone all the time. Act like your lucky to have a local place to shop and shoot and I don't think you will be disapointed. read more
