Did you like the 1960's? If you did Danish train service is the thing for you. A slow bumping ride…read morefar from modern thinking. Electrified? No, sir! Diesel driven. Expensive? Yes, mama! How come? They say Danish politicians never take the train... they should! // Five days after this was written; been sitting one hour in a train standing still. A system collapse. More than that I would add.

The central station in Copenhagen, for example, is an architectural beauty with everything you could possibly need or want. Other places, they are simply holes in a the wall and you're glad the train doesn't stop there for too long. Nyborg's train station is no paradise, but as far as train stations go in Denmark, it's actually pretty good. Parking is typically adequate, even during the busy (read: holiday) periods. It's in a good location with a nice surrounding area, and you feel reasonably safe there at all hours of the day or night. Inside they have a good sized gift shop and ticket office, where you can buy all sorts of magazines, maps, lotto cards, quick food like a French hotdog, or even some Danish pastries and rolls and a coffee to keep you warm until the train shows up. The staff has always been extremely friendly and, surprisingly, we even met someone working there that used to live in Phoenix, Arizona? How cool is that? Bathrooms are well maintained and adequate, and they even have an area to keep your kids busy and away from everyone else, which is always appreciated. Because it's such a nice, low-key place, we almost always make this our point of departure to and from Fyn, even though there are other train stations within about equal distance from where we stay when visiting. Bonus points, you tend to get FAR fewer tourists here than in the big city (Odense) train station. There's no frill here, no movie theater or other activities that attract youth (or trashy folk) with nothing better to do, so it's typically quiet, uncrowded, uneventful and all around a great place to catch a train. You just don't get the thugs and tons of foreign thieves and hoodlums here like you do in the big city train stations, and it's a welcome change of pace. Highly recommended!

As it happens, there are still some places in the world where you can satisfy your child-like…read morefascination with big boats and big trucks all in one place, and the ferry between Langeland and Lolland is probably one of the most practical, especially if you happen to be vacationing in Denmark. The ferry is massive, and handles both commercial trucks as well as regular cars, motorcycles and the occasional scooter, so you'll see a bit of everything at the dock. Depending on when you go, the ferry will arrive from Lolland first and unload everyone, before opening up for the return trip, at which point you drive in and park, then proceed upstairs and into the lounge for the duration of the crossing. You'd be forgiven for thinking you were on anything but a ferry once you get to the upper deck and wander inside, as it's actually pretty nice. Ample seating, air conditioning, gift shop combined with a cafe and top notch restrooms. When we traveled to Lolland during the holidays, they even had a decorated Christmas tree in the lobby. Not too shabby. Your inner child will appreciate the size and scale of the entire operation, from the moment you park your car in the belly of the beast to when you get upstairs and wander inside. If you need further indulgence, there are ample opportunities to step outside and grab photos to your heart's content, before and during the entire voyage (although, they do ask you to get back to your car right before they arrive). The entire trip takes about 45 minutes, depending on the conditions of the sea, so it's just about perfect for getting some photos and then coming back inside the cafe to buy a French hotdog and cozy up in a comfy booth for the remainder of the trip. Whenever we need to get to Lolland, we make it a point to take the ferry. There's not really anything quite like it state side, and riding the big boat and watching it swallow cars and semi trucks, only to spit them out on the other side, never seems to get old either.
