The experience that both of my children have had at the school has been life-changing for them and for us. My 3rd grader, who was struggling in K-2, felt so welcomed. The teachers and the administration care so much about these kids. And the way that they teach, makes the kids absolutely love going to school. There are a lot of projects that allow the kids to apply their learning in real life situations. My then 3rd grader graduated last year and was extremely prepared for high school and is getting all As at a prestigious private scho Another thing that stands out for me about WNS is that the kids learn how to work things out with each other, how to communicate with each other and to teachers; the kids are able to have mature conversations with each other when things don't go as expected. I just love the school so much...

GV is our neighborhood school and we hadn't even seriously considered it, until a wise educator friend of mine encouraged me to check out their dual language (Spanish/English, on a 90/10 model that I think is ingenious) immersion program. What we found was a thriving, involved school with a dedicated principal, staff, and parent community that integrates kids and families from all walks of life. In addition to the DL program and learning academy, GV has a special needs program that is fully integrated with the rest of the broader school. We have a library, new computer room (thanks to a generous donor who happens to be a successful former GV student), arts and garden program, and a Dia de Los Muertos program annually that amazes. Not only is my daughter learning Spanish, she's learning what it means to be part of her full community. Also, she's picked up some pre-algebra along the way. Not bad for a humble public neighborhood school, huh? I'm so glad we didn't overlook it, and neither should you, if you're researching school options for your family. Check out grandviewelementary.org for a schedule of parent tours. Go Dragons!

Reviewing the Mandarin dual language immersion program: the school and strong parent community have…read morebeen amazing. The program is organized so that kids learn half the time in English, and half the time in Chinese. This is "double-learning" -- they go through a full elementary school program in both languages. The school also responded amazingly well to the pandemic, with teachers taking the initiative to send daily recorded lessons without skipping a bit before LAUSD even figured out what to do, then nearly a full year of Zoom, and now in-person learning with weekly testing. Kids are happy and learn lots. Can't recommend enough!

I recently enrolled my child in the Mandarin Immersion program at Braddock. Since I did my…read moreresearch, I had high expectations of the program, but surprisingly, Braddock has actually surpassed them. Not only do I feel Braddock MI is taking the best approach to individualized student learning (CGI math, writers workshop, etc), I also *very much* appreciate the progressive, light and flexible approach to homework. They get it. Moreover, the MI program is now also an integrated STEM program. Bonus! Putting the educational quality aside though, the absolute best recommendation I can give is this: we've been to three schools before Braddock (two "well-picked" preschools and one other STEAM elementary). My LO hated going to them all. Hated school. Cried when mommy had to leave. You get the picture. Braddock is legit the very first school that my child actually likes going to. The teachers are GREAT with the kids and actually make them excited to learn and be there (between you and me, I've checked in on the classrooms... shhhhh). LO actually walks into school while waving and smiling at me. You can't ask for more than that... bilingual, STEM, progressive, individualized high-quality learning, and a happy kid who's actually excited to go to school.

The school provides a strong presence in the neighborhood and supports students, but the way they handle traffic and maintenance creates major quality-of-life issues for nearby residents. During the school year, parents often block driveways during drop-off and pick-up, making it frustrating for those of us who live here. Even after raising the issue, it continues regularly. On top of that, maintenance teams sometimes use leaf blowers as early as 6:30 a.m., even during the summer months when school isn't in session. It would be a huge improvement if the school scheduled this work at later hours. I respect the school's mission, but I hope they'll consider how their operations impact the surrounding community.

No, parents will go out of their way (literally) to drive their kids to the trendiest charter, magnet, immersion, etc. But look at what gets lost, the whole well-being of the child. Do they have nice teachers who know about their hobbies? Do they have nice playgrounds and plenty of space to run and play? Do they have parents who look after other kids as a community? Certainly, Short Avenue has a STEAM-focused curriculum, Planet Bravo computer lab, theater and visual arts, classical language LATIN instruction, Chess Tutors, LEGO Engineering, and a free after school program for working families. They're all great, but really, it's the people (parents, teachers, and students) who make this little school remarkable.

The principal and coordinator both quit because the families became just too much to deal with. We lost a lot of truly wonderful teachers. Now we have a principal who is rude and oblivious and always defensive. She's all talk and no action and has no energy whatsoever. Our former principal, who granted had some shortcomings as well, was such a positive presence on campus. He engaged with families and students in an upbeat and excited manner every day. I wasn't his biggest fan, but the environment that he fostered was really special. We felt like we had a voice. Like he cared what the parents thought. This new principal acts like we as parents are always in the way or annoying her or doing something wrong. She doesn't remember anyone who isn't constantly kissing her behind. I've had many face to face conversations with her and she still never knows who I am or who my children are. We used to be welcome on campus, it was such a warm and loving environment. Now you have to jump through a thousand hoops to get approved to volunteer and for some reason only the select few parents get approved.
