This has to be one of the best if not the best State Parks in NC, Every site is meticulously cleaned even the fire ring which by the way is the best looking and safest of any park in the US. The stone is impressive, when I was growing up i used to climb and slide down one just like this but 20 times smaller and I wouldn't dare to climb this one, can't tell one this picture a little white spec, it is a guy climbing. We got here without a reservation and anybody else at the booth would have turned us around but not this lady, she was willing to make an exception and not only that but she gave us a site that someone had vacated earlier leaving the site available and because they left a day ahead of their normal checkout day, she let us in to take that site free of charge. I pray to God I don't get her in trouble with her supervisor. We will be back and next time we will stay a week

What a fantastically beautiful park! So many things to do here, hiking, exploring, picnicking, and learning about history. I particularly loved that they have a mobility-impaired parking lot near the cabins so that I could explore that area without having to do a hike that was impossible. We visited on a weekday, so had the place to ourselves. I will definitely come back in the spring.

This is my favorite state park that's pretty close to Charlotte. We can get there in 1.5 hours which makes for an ready day trip. I've been here three times now with different groups of people and I always do the Stone Mountain Loop Trail. It says it's 4.5 miles, but my GPS had it at just over 5. It's one of the most diverse hikes you can do. I always park at the upper parking lot and then take the trail to the right when it splits. This will take you to the summit first, then you'll hike back down and around to get a view of the mountain from the bottom at a homestead before getting to see a waterfall at the end. The hike is challenging, but not too hard. There are two harder sections--the climb up to the summit and the large number of stairs after the waterfall. The views from the summit are gorgeous and the waterfall is very unique. If you enjoy hiking, I'd definitely recommend this hike!

Aside from the 8-person posse dressed in jeans and polo shirts while blasting "My Milkshake Brings All the Boys to the Yard" and pushing an empty wheelchair (to the top of a mountain), this was a very relaxing and enjoyable experience. I'm in halfway decent shape so the loop trail was more fun than strenuous, but it might not be for everyone. The coolest parts: the peak (of course) and the waterfall at the base (of course). Then again, they wouldn't be as rewarding without the journey (the trail). An imminent thunderstorm added to the adventure. I liked having to make the decision of moving forward with an exhausted dog to beat the storms or stopping to rest for her (chose the latter). We all sacrificed our water for her. She (my dog) was definitely thirsty. When I stopped to pee in the woods (on a tree), she heard the stream and turned to me. Maybe I'm different, but I think it's weird for your dog to see your ding dong, so I turned away in time (no splashes) and we were once gain on our way. As far as the park goes, it's clean, the trails are well maintained, the markers are clear, and the views are very good. You can also sit on rocking chairs on a porch at The Homestead, but it looked like park employees were occupying them. Disappointing, but I don't blame them. The park is easy to get to. Take Ex 83 off I-77. Just make sure you follow the signs instead of directions on your phone, which will lead you to the scenic route. The only reason for a 4 instead of a 5 is because it's not the most amazing park in the world, or in the state, but it's definitely worth a visit. Be sure to hit the ice cream place in the cabin just outside of the park.

One of my favorite state parks I've ever been to! While I'm town recently, we hiked the 4.5 mile loop trail, which gives you views from the summit; the mountain side view; and views of Stone Mountain Falls. The hike is moderate to strenuous, but doable if you take your time. We loved all the sights and the trail was well maintained. We want to come back and do other hikes in the future. Highly recommended if you're in the area or passing through!

In a mood for more than just a walk ? This is the place to be! We tried their waterfall trail and climbed up to the peak. A little strenuous but all worth it when you get to the top. Nice view with some cool breeze. If it's your first time, it might be tricky to find the parking that leads to the hiking trails.

Only a 1.5ish hour drive from CLT, this park is definitely worth it. We started at the Lower Parking Lot of the Stone Mountain Loop going counter clockwise and veered off to do the Lower and Middle Falls trails. All in all, I liked this route - it was a good workout, but ended with downhills. I'm sure there are pros and cons to starting at the Upper Lot and/or going clockwise, but regardless of the path you take, it's a fun trail with beautiful summit and waterfall views. (I feel like that was a deeper metaphor for life lol)

Awesomeness! A fabulous state park. Free entry. Beautiful scenery. Gorgeous trails. Be prepared to hike if that is your purpose, parts of the loop are strenuous, and precarious. I did not go to the summit, I was not capable of it, but the trail was absolutely breathtaking. A perfect picnic spot at the old homestead, so bring a lunch or snack, sit, soak it all in, and the grandeur of the Stone Mountain will amaze you.

This was our first visit to Stone Mountain and definitely not our last! We arrived mid-day and headed to the visitor center to grab a map and some information about places to hike. We had two teenagers with us so we let them choose which hikes to take. They wanted to see all the waterfalls first. The hike started out fairly easy toward Stone Mountain falls. The views once we reached the first falls were awesome! 220 ft rock waterfall. We continued on the trail which include 250+ stairs straight down to the bottom of the falls. Several children were sliding down the fall at the bottom into the little pool area below. The water was super cold! We continued down the trail towards the Middle and Lower Falls. We were the only folks at the Middle Falls so we hung out there for a bit. On our attempt to see the lower falls, there was a deeper water crossing before we got there that we weren't willing to cross so we turned back. Total trip there and back hiking was around 4 miles and lots of stairs. Worth the hike! After that, climbing to the summit was not going to work out time wise. We decided to hike the 1 mile out to the Hutchinson Homestead to see a view of the actual Stone Mountain. It was gorgeous! I've never seen anything like it! We walked around the Homestead and hiked our way back to the car. We will definitely come back again to hike the summit. We can't wait!

Beautiful park with amazing views. We were staying at another park in Virginia and decided to come down and visit. A lot of the trails are strenuous due to the terrain so definitely bring plenty of water to keep you hydrated. read more

I did three different hikes in the park and loved all three. If you want to see them before you go, check out the following: Widow's Creek - https://youtu.be/7L5vWsvwWks, Hutchinson Homestead - https://youtu.be/isnz--M5oyg and I have Stone Mountain Loop Trail - (coming soon). I went to Stone Mountain last weekend and it is amazing! I certainly will be going back! Truly peaceful lovely trails my mutt Marley loved it he swam a bit in one of the watering holes at the bottom of the falls. It was rather hot that day but honestly the trails were shaded well and offered a cool breeze. Watch out for ticks we found a few on the dog but not to fret they were wood ticks. Upon climbing I found a momma and baby bird in a cave like opening it was awesome to see I quickly got out of their view as they were very large. The day was majestic and my hubby and I really enjoyed! read more

I really enjoyed this hike. It was a little too crowded for my taste but I am sure it wasn't half as crowded as it can be during a busier time of year! We did the 4.5 mile--Stone Mountain Loop. It was so cool to pass the HUGE stone mountain on the way to the top where we could see people rock climbing! That was quite impressive! The hike was challenging but not overbearing. The views were amazing and there were plenty of places to sit and enjoy lunch while taking in the view. Parking was easy and this was very accessible to 77 so an easy ride to and from Charlotte. read more

This negative review is targeted toward the management of the park and the local State Trooper who was more than rude to us yesterday, not the park itself. My family and I drove 2 hours to get to the park. We drove around the park first and then decided to park and hike to some streams for fishing, but first I needed to renew my fishing license online. There was no cell signal in the park. So, we hopped in the car and left the park to get a signal (we noticed as we were leaving there was a line to get back in but thought this was normal as we have experienced this at another park and they would simply be letting people in as others left). So we drove to the General Store 3 or so miles away, was able to purchase my fishing license, and drove back. We noticed that everyone was turning around after speaking to either the park ranger or the State Trooper so we knew we were going to have problems. The Trooper explained to me the capacity issue. I explained to her we were in the park just 10 min prior and she sarcastically responded "well, you picked a bad time to leave, as you cannot get back in until 3 or 4 hours later!" I mentioned the fact that cars were constantly leaving the park and she responded that "there's a wedding party that is not connected to the capacity issues so we have no way of knowing who's leaving and what parking lot they came from". Really? How about about have the ranger that was stationed at the exit waving people out to simply ASK that very question, and then let cars in as non wedding party visitors leave! Anyway, my 10 year old daughter, as well as my wife and I, were super disappointed. We had planned this trip for weeks as it is hard to schedule things like this with our work schedules. We essentially spent 4 hours drive time to have a quick ride around the park. Unfortunately, we will NEVER return to this park as there is no way to know 2 hours in advance if the park will be at capacity or not when we get there. read more

We stayed for 2 nights at Stone Mountain State Park campground in site#69 which like all RV sites in the park, only have water/electric hookups. Sites appear leveled but they were not, leveling blocks were used to offset that. The mountains surround the campsite provide some reliefs from sun in the morning and late afternoon, but scorching sun at noon will make your AC working overtime. For $20/night, the campsites are far enough apart and close enough to the bathroom make this stay comfortable. No WiFi anywhere in the park, lack of LTE reception, rerouting campground entrance and gate lock detention nightly, and no alcoholic beverage policy make this park borderline paranoia. Bathroom which consisted of showers and toilets were clean and functional, thanks to diligence cleaning staff who seems to start cleaning around 7AM daily. Dump station is conveniently located outside campground with blue trash receptacles line up for you use. Clean and pleasant place to walk your pooch with paved and spacious campground roads. OTA TV channels were around 4 according to our neighbor, but we got zilch. Nearest grocery and fresh produce (and we meant harvesting the same day fresh) can be found at Pro Stop less than 15mins away after very twisted road. Would we stay again? Perhaps if we can't find anything else. read more

Super nice! We stayed a night here to camp and we had a lot of fun. They're restrooms are clean but old. And I did see a roach once but I mean we were camping so it was totally expected. They also have warm showers! We hiked the stone mountain loop and we all got to take a warm shower afterwards which felt really nice! We didn't bring our dog but everybody else brought theirs so there were no problems with that. read more
What a fantastic place to go for a hike. We only had time for a short hike but I look forward to coming back and trying one of the MANY trails they have. If your a fisherman I would look into a license as a lot of people were out Trout fishing. read more
How to describe a place so integral to my childhood and family lineage in a short review... seems almost impossible. A few generations back, this entire area belonged to my family in some form or another - as recent as my great-grandfather, my family may (or may not have) produced moonshine in them thar' hills. We've had property in the nearby town of Traphill for as long as I can remember - and much farther if you ask my grandfather. As such, I've been coming to this monolithic stone pretty much my entire life. I have hiked every trail as well as numerous off-trail miles through the backcountry surrounding Stone Mountain. It is an amazing place. However, this is (mostly) supposed to be a non-biased review - so here goes: there is ample parking for everything from a car, to a trailer, to a horse - in addition to an access area close to the primitive village setup for those with physical limitations. The main attraction of the park is it's large dome shaped rock - duh. From the access-lots, it's an easy hike to the base, a semi-strenuous hike to the top (be prepared for some lose rocks and lots of steps), or a simple to moderate climb up the side of the face. The views are great from the top - lots of forests, a few glimpses of the Blue Ridge Parkway, and neighboring Wolf Rock. You don't have to climb the mountain to enjoy the park. History lovers will appreciate the primitive village, waterfall seekers can enjoy a leisurely walk to the lower and upper falls, and thrill seekers... well, you can find interesting things to climb - though I won't advise you to seek them out (however, feel free to message me and I'll send you some hiking directions to a few very uniques places in the area). All-in-all, the park offers a wealth of opportunities for nature lovers of all levels of activity. If you can't find something to do here, you're not trying! Bring the family, leave your wallet at home (it's free!), and be sure to pack your camera! read more

Unfortunately I didn't get to explore the area as much as I wanted to but we had a time limit for the turkey cooking in the oven at home, so we had about 2 hrs. We went to the Homestead area that is right next to the giant mountain face. Some neat old pre-1900 buildings with information signs. The real show, however, was the giant, granite face of the mountain. It is quite spectacular. Granite, eroded smooth and round over the centuries and slick with small trickles of water surrounded with huge boulders that have fallen long ago amid the trees. We had fun climbing them as far as we could go. I found a beautiful bright orange salamander on the way up! I can only imagine how fun this rock face would be to climbers. If we had had the time, I would have liked to hike some of the trails, especially the one that takes you to the top. Too bad I leave for Tampa in the morning. I guess I will have to conquer it on some other trip to NC. We were on our way out around dusk. I've been told that dusk is the best time to see deer and that couldn't have been truer here. We must've seen about 20 of them scattered hear and there on our way through the park until we reached the exit! It was all very beautiful. read more

This is a great little state park. The trails were challenging enough to be fun, but not so bad that you will be hating life after in the middle of it. The scenery is beautiful, and really reminds you a lot of scenes from Last of the Mohicans. Highly recommend this for a long weekend day hike from Charlotte. read more
What a gem of a state park! While spending the Memorial Day weekend in Mount Airy, we had included Pilot Mountain and Hanging Rock State Parks to our list. But a local recommended make the 45 minute drive out to Stone Mountain, and we are grateful that we did. The drive alone is beautiful: windy, western North Carolina country roads. Stone Mountain offers several hiking trails at various lengths and exertion levels plus camping options, both rugged and more comfortable. We took on Stone Mountain Loop, a 4.3 mile trail labeled as "strenuous". It's great that the trails are very interconnected in the park, so you can truly "design-your-own" hike to fit your needs for that day. At the trailhead, we ventured left first to check out Stone Mountain Falls, an impressive display where the power of water and rock collide. The entire trail is easily marked and well-maintained. Several bridges have been added to keep hikers safe over crossing moving water. As we neared the summit, we quickly felt the "strenuous" aspects of the trail. Built-in stairs provided a climbing platform to the top. If you were to start the trail going right, you would encounter a steady and steep incline toward the top and then have the stairs meeting you on the other side. The views from the Summit's top are absolutely worth it. And that is just one trail. We will definitely return to Stone Mountain State Park to visit the other parts of the park, have some lunch, and share this incredible space with others. read more

The scenery is beautiful. There are picnic shelters, and plenty of trails to explore. My best advice is to take a map, and follow the colored dots on trees to stay on a trail. read more

So, a day off from work had me heading up for a little fly fishing. This delayed harvest stream in this park means folks can take fish out until October. The fishing was not good, but the woods, trails and wildlife I saw made up for it. read more

A really unique mountain, with its big bald face and trails of people repelling down the side. I enjoy this hike as much as Chimney Rock -- but better yet, it's free! I recommend parking in the lower lot -- there's a bit of extra trail, and then you arrive at the base of the mountain, with a great view of the thing in its entirety. You can choose to scale on the short side, with a lengthy return walk; or do the opposite. On my two visits we've done the latter. There are moderately strenuous moments, at the steepest inclines; but many of these areas are equipped with stairs which makes the climb much easier. And then, there's a nice payoff once you reach the top. And a shorter return trip. Maybe a mile in to the hike, when taking the lengthier route to the top, you get to the falls. The water pools in parts, and depending on the weather, you might see some people slipping off their socks and shoes to wade around in it. With the lack of trees on the top, you'll want to recline and bask in the sunshine while the breeze whips all around you. Since my last visit, they've invested in bridges to cross over the creeks and in additional stairs on the ascent/descent (on my last trip, the descent was so steep, I had to slide down sections of the rock on my butt!). Restrooms are available at each parking lot, and are well-kept. Campgrounds available too. A great day trip. Bring the kids, bring the dogs. And don't forget plenty of water and some snacks! read more

I don't know where to start, so I'll start with things I don't like about Stone Mountain. The only thing I don't like about SM would be the hours, I wish it opened earlier and closed later. The fishing is pretty crowded after delayed harvest but still fun. The bouldering areas are underrated because most people come for the climbing. read more

My family of four drove from 2.5h away for a day trip. After reading several reviews on TA, we settled on the Stone Mountain Loop Trail. It was 4.3 mi in length and rated Strenuous, which was quite accurate. There were definitely times along the trail when my heart was pounding and I was quite sweaty (42yo somewhat fit person). My 5yo and 8yo made the hike without any difficulty. There are over 300 steps through this trail and a LOT of uphill with a few benches. The views were definitely worth it! We parked in the Upper Lot parking area, hiked in, turned Left for a clockwise hike around the trail. Loved the falls, the meadows, the mountain laurel, the few rhododendron that were in bloom (probably better in late may/early june). Loved the summit area. Per all the signs, stay on marked paths to avoid injury or worse. After our 5 hours hiking, we stopped on the way out of the park at the Stony Mountain General Store for ice cream, which was delicious. read more

I have been going to this park since I was a little girl. Yesterday was mine and my husbands 1 year anniversary so we decided to drive 2 hours to Stone Mtn. We spent 3-4 hours just driving around, playing in the creeks with our daughter, and look at the wildlife. It's free to just drive around and look. There are plenty of places to pull of to get in the water..probably best time is summer to play in creeks. The wildlife does start coming out more in the evening towards the start of fall. Needless to say we had a blast. Really fun place if you just want to have a family day. read more
