My father-in-law and I played this course on a beautiful Saturday morning in late fall. The only…read morereason I'm not giving this course a 5/5 star review is because the staff was not prepared for the morning tee times. When we arrived around 8 AM for our 9:10 AM tee time, there was no one in the golf shop, so we walked to the golf facilities near the driving range where there also no staff to be found. We wanted to get loose for the round, so we had to gather range balls ourselves to hit. Eventually, staff arrived around 30ish minutes before we were set to tee off to provide us with a cart and check us in. Once we set off on our round, the course was honestly a little underwhelming. Don't get me wrong - this course is very nice and well-manicured, but the green fees here are by far the most expensive in the area. Given the usual $100 green fee, I was expecting a much more professional and unique experience. If I had to choose whether to play here or Finkbine in Iowa City, I'd definitely choose the latter. Overall, I had a great morning playing a new course, but I was left wanting a little more out of my overall experience at the course. Hopefully, the next time I visit I can confidently give this course a full 5-star review!

This was my first time (and unfortunately last time) playing the current design of the course, and I loved my experience at the home of the Iowa Hawkeyes golf program. It was beautiful day to play a great game, and I look forward to playing the new course design in a couple years!

Arguably the best course in the Iowa City area. I have been here a couple of times, and have…read moreenjoyed it for the most part. Here are my thoughts: Clubhouse: Nice. Nothing to write home about, but decent enough. It looks like they have started to cater to banquets/weddings/etc. Smart move as the view out the back of the clubhouse is awesome. Pro shop is on the smaller side and it shares space with the snack bar. Lots or apparel, but not much in the way of equipment to check out. Driving Range: Yes, located a short drive in the golf cart away from the course. While I would have liked it closer to the course and pro shop, there just isn't room to do so. Practice Green: In a word, huge. This green could easily accommodate 10+ players at one time on it. Huge undulation in the middle of it. Really is one of the nicer practice greens I have putted on. Roll was true to the course as well, which is a huge plus for me. Course: As stated before, if you do not have your best game going, you will get killed out here. I really wish courses would make golfers carry a handicap card and then make them go off of appropriate tee boxes. I hate watching a bunch of hacks play from the blacks because they think they have to. The colors are not gender specific people! Get over it. That said, I'm a 9 handicap, played from the blues and wished I had played from the whites. Some things I could control, while others I couldn't (like losing 4 balls that were hit in the middle of the fairway because the leaf cover was so bad. The overall course condition on the day we played, I would grade as average to poor, but you definitely can see the potential in the course if you were to play it say in June. Fairways were wet and soggy, but in decent shape. Greens were in good shape, but the leaf cover was crippling on a couple of holes. Water stations frequently and bathrooms once each 9. My biggest complaint is with the GPS though. For a course this nice, they do a disservice to themselves with the GPS they offer. Only gives you front, middle and back of green distances. How about distances to hazards, bunkers, water, etc? The way this course is set up, those distances are a must! Staff: Pro Shop was nice, snack bar girl was nice, Starter was nice. Would have been nice to see a ranger out on the course (had one group holding up play), and really think they need a bag boy on 18 to offer to clean clubs upon our return. Food: Basic food and snacks. Prices decent. Overall: While I have not played all the courses in the Iowa City area, I know a good golf course when I see it. I think this can be beat, but not many courses are going to be better than this in this area. And to be able to play it for $46 is frankly, a steal. I would really like to see this course in the middle of the summer to see how great it probably is. Based on what I've seen though, I'll take it.

Apparently do not expect to get any communication from the manager and ensure you don't have a cancellation or you'll have to eat an extra $80. Even during downpour rain for half of your front nine! Beautiful course but we won't be going back. Very unfortunate experience.

And at $5 a person (over the age of two), you seem to get a lot of bang for your buck. The outdoor pool is open from June till nearly the end of August. There are three reasons this isn't a five star-- 1. I think it is crazy if you commit to a punch pass, you don't get a slightly discounted rate. 10 punches for $50. 2. Re-entry is not allowed. Which, as a parent, I kind of wish it was? My three year old can only last a few hours before needing a break, especially on a super sunny day. 3. The hours are very abbreviated, IMO. I don't do tennis-- so the eight indoor and 12 outdoor tennis courts don't really do it for me. (They offer pickleball courts on Sunday evenings, though. Check it out!) The HTRC also boasts a fitness space (open 530-1030pm daily). There are treadmills, upright bicycles, recumbent bicycles, ellipticals, stair masters, free weights, legg press, chin/dip machine, balls, mats, bands, medicine balls and more. It's smaller than Iowa's downtown gym, the CRWC, with less machines/weights but it does the job! Why I say the HTRC is a godsend in the wintry grossness that is Iowa is that it boasts two indoor turf fields available for rental. The price is pretty steep but it is a hot commodity for youth teams in the area. My kiddos both are in competitive softball/baseball and their teams all get to practice during the offseason at the HTRC. The HTRC is also the home of the University of Iowa Women's Tennis, Women's Soccer, Women's Field Hockey, Softball, and Hawkeye Marching Band. Finally-- be warned that you need to pay metered parking. They do indeed enforce it and you will get ticketed. (Weekends are free, though.)
