Stift Fischbeck is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the adventurer looking for an experience with a spiritual dimension. Founded in 955 (I'm not missing a number), the foundation was established for women who might serve the church. After the Reformation, it remained a foundation for evangelical women and still provides a setting today for women who want to live a cloistered life and yet be in service to the church. Staft Fischbeck has a small and comfortable Pilgrim House and a Vacation House that can be rented at reasonable costs. More importantly, guests can receive a tour of the magnificent Romanesque church with a spacious Carolingian undercroft. The place with all of its buildngs is huge and it needs millions to bring it up to date, but one can see it pretty much as it has been for centuries with the monastic quarters, the cloister, the gardens, and the famous Fischbeck Wandteppich (tapestry) from 1583. It's not very likely that you can just drop by and find room, so you need to plan ahead and make arrangments. However, the people are very friendly and you will know that you have experienced one of the world's existing treasures in your visit. read more
