It's not that great for fiction, theatre or modern art books (9/10ths of my bookshelf), so I don't come here very often, but it's the sort of place I can imagine liking more as I age and the books I like start to grace its shelves. It's not young, it's certainly not hip or cool, but it is impressive to behold, and a great place to find hidden gems. What I have looked for, and enjoyed the selection of, is non-fiction here. There are a huge variety of old classics here, especially in the psychology section: all of the classics are here, and in ample quantities. I suppose this is the kind of shop to look for strange old books over looking for modern and exciting pieces, but since that really isn't me... I'd recommend it if it's you though.

Don't expect trendy music, a in store coffee bar or the latest fiction or Jordan biography. What you can expect are shelves well stocked with leather bound tomes and grimoires covering most fiction and non fiction genres. I am a bit of a collector of random metaphysical texts and such like and can spend hours in here searching through the shelves for something out of the ordinary. Usually, anything I come across is in my price range also, which is always nice. The gentlemen running the store are also very nice and always patient to indulge a heavy browser like myself. Sadly, I rarely walk in here with a clear title I am hunting for, but I get the impression that if this was the case they would be very helpful in sourcing a copy for me. If you are more into your contemporary paperback, they also have a selection of reasonably priced title out the front of the store and I have picked up a few bargains here by sorting through the fruit boxes. If you are in the city and after a title, you would do well to keep this place in mind.

I was delighted to discover Bookworms of Shoreham yesterday. With the start of summer unfurling…read morebeautifully before us Brighton has become thick with jostling crowds and impenetrable traffic, so I have begun to explore the outer reaches in search of quiet and accessible places to indulge some of my pastimes. Bookworms of Shoreham is the perfect place for me to get my literary kicks. It's one of those second hand book shops that are stuck in a constant time lag, about ten years behind, not quite the wonderland that you might find in central Brighton and by no means as self aware. The old lady behind the counter scarcely seemed to notice that I was in there, not by any means because of senility, no - because she herself was so engrossed in the book that she was reading. The stock here seems a little patchy ranging from things like a reference book on cross country cycling from 1993 (long since out dated but containing some amusing pictures) to a car owner's manual from the 1950s to a pretty comprehensive section of the Brontë sisters. This place is a bit of a gold mine though, the prices are reasonable and the shop has good views of the Adur estuary. In fact it should have a sign on the door saying Book Fans Beware - you are at risk of losing quite a lot of time in here.

What a find…read more This is an excellent little second-hand bookshop with an amazing stock of books. I could have spent a whole day in here, and also spent silly amount of money. The interior is just as a second-hand bookshop should be - narrow passages, creaky stairs, old wooden bookcases. The stock includes especially large sections on transport, history, military history and local history, and has a good selection of second-hand Ordnance Survey maps. In the end, I managed to restrain myself and bought just one book (an Anniversary present for my long-suffering significant other). You could buy a much nicer souvenir of historic Arundel in here than in many of tourist tat shops nearby. Recommended.

Sarah manages to get a great selection of books crammed in - with particularly good art and children's book sections - and she has rapidly created a place where people feel at home. It is a rare visit that does not end with you finding an interesting book. The Book Ferret has book clubs, and I am also looking forward to the poetry readings with wine coming soon! I could go on, but I think any bookshop which has small children sitting on the floor excitedly turning the pages of a book has got something right.

New independent bookshops aren't exactly ten a penny. It also happened to be World Book Day, I have just realised. It was meant to be. I love how it looks from the outside. Like a portal to another world. You go down Hanbury Street, think you must've missed it and then...suddenly it's there. Stylish black shopfront with a nice inviting glow. This was only a very quick visit but I like how they do things in Libreria. First, I have to note that there was a Riga RP-1 record player with Velvet Underground & Nico on the turntable so...good start. No espresso bar here. No mobiles allowed. Comfy seating and little nooks to sit down and check out a book. Tick tick tick. Sally, Libreria's director, introduced herself to me and explained how things were laid out. Very friendly and helpful. Books are largely organised alphabetically, fiction on the left and nonfic on the right. However, within that, books are clustered into themes or ideas, in order to promote interesting combinations of books nestling next to each other. Great idea. Pure A-Z is so 2015. Also, they have asked celebs to do a mini-curation of their favourite books. Shami Chakrabarti's faves are currently on display. I think the idea is to change everything round every quarter. Events are also gonna happen here. I dutifully added my email to the mailing list on the front desk. Waterstones can do one.
