I'm so glad I came across restaurant, it's tucked away upstairs with an intimate setting and super nice staff. I came with some friends for Thanksgiving dinner and they offered prime rib that night which really hit the spot. What we loved about this place is that even though it's a steakhouse, they even had a section on the menu for vegetarians (good vegetarian options) which was a good find for one of our vegetarian friends. The staff were really chill and friendly despite how busy it was that night. And at the end of the meal even gave our friend a birthday ice cream as well. A very lovely experience. read more

Gluten Free Review - diagnosed with severe gluten intolerance. (FYI: I do tell places that I have celiac disease since it tends to be taken more seriously than "gluten intolerance". This was recommended by a dietitian and a medical doctor since my symptoms present like the disease.) My gluten eating husband and I dined at Steve's in March 2025. We sat by the windows (recommend!) and our server was great! With regards to GF, there aren't any designations on the menus for entrees/apps that are "naturally" gluten free. The server stated that they should/can be able to make any dish gluten free and seemed knowledgeable about the menu. I went with the rack of lamb with a baked potato and veggies and it was so so so good. Drinks were delicious as well! My constructive thoughts: It would be more reassuring if there were some items labeled GF. I didn't want to ask about the entire menu since I feel like I'm annoying the server (this would be at any restaurant). I always try to get whatever seems most likely to be "naturally" gluten free since the chefs are busy and I, personally, don't want to be the person asking for a gluten dish to be made gluten free. It has to be annoying and there is still a risk of that dish accidentally getting mucked up. Thanks to Steve's for offering a dining experience that was beautiful and delicious! I loved being right up next to the sea with the sand under my feet, the beachy breeze, and a pina colada in my hand! Not only was it overcooked, but it was served on ciabatta bun which didn't really go with the flavor. The menu didn't mention the type of bun they used, so I assumed a regular burger bun. My husband ordered baby back ribs and they arrived DRENCHED in sauce. We also ordered a side of sweet potato fries and those looked like they came straight from the freezer section of the supermarket. We didn't really enjoy anything we ordered, but at least the restaurant views were nice. Won't be eating here again. read more

I came here while visiting Catalina for a couple of days and one of the locals recommended this restaurant as a Catalina staple. Overall, the food was good but not amazing. To start, we shared the duck cigars which had an interesting flavor and we thoroughly enjoyed them. I had the scallops and chips for my main and it was pretty tasty/about what you'd expect. My husband had the shrimp Avalon style and loved it! However, the drinks were lackluster. I ordered a dirty vodka martini but there was little dirty and instead, it just tasted like a glass of plain vodka. I know vodka is the primary ingredient in a vodka martini but this had absolutely nothing else to mask it so it was difficult to gulp down. My husband ordered the ultimate manhattan and had the same experience - just straight alcohol. Aside from these minor complaints, the staff was friendly and the ambiance was warm and welcoming. I would not advise against checking out Steve's Steakhouse but perhaps order better than I did. read more

Had a large party here on a Friday night in August. I forget our server's name, but he was incredibly efficient and attentive, even with 20+ people. The coconut shrimp were particularly good. The ribs had a nice tangy sauce that was a little different than I've had before, but it was a nice touch. Overall the food was quite tasty: the entree presentation could be a *little* better, but I say that very lightly (again, 20 people) given that it came out quickly, hot, and was delicious. I'm sure if you're a small party it'll be a different story. The owner Steve (yes, it is Steve) helped set the whole thing up and made my wife's birthday a very special event. VEGAN REVIEW One of the few places that has vegan options. They have a vegan & vegetarian section of their menu. Nothing terribly inspiring, but they get 5 stars for effort! Hubby has the impossible burger & I had the cauliflower steak. The sauce was VERY Mayo heavy & the cheese was just a slice laid on top & melted LOL. Cocktails were ok (I may have chosen wrong: pomegranate martini). They only have water in plastic bottles :( The food & bev gets a 3. We sat on the beach, highly recommend. There is a $5 surcharge for that. I'm not even sure where the indoor seating is???? Can't say enough good things about our experience at this restaurant! The waitstaff was super friendly and fun and really made our experience awesome. We were sat in the front of the restaurant where we could see the ocean out of the windows (and next to a really funny family). We started our meal with "duck cigars" which were kind of like duck taquitos. Dang, I've never had duck before and this was a super tasty first experience! I would go back here just for these! My hubs had surf and turf and I had scallops in a garlic butter sauce over bread. OMG. The flavor was out of this world! We both had a few cocktails but let me tell you...this restaurant serves an after dinner cordial so we asked our server what he recommended. He said espresso martini all the way. The appetizers were the best part of our meal, fresh oysters, calamari strips (a different kind of preparation that I'm used to but pleasantly surprised), and creamy clam chowder. Every single employee seemed to complained about each other and bitch about customers. I ordered a 6 oz filet. I maybe got 4 oz. I said wtf is this? Where's the scale. I asked for it medium and it was medium well for sure. Not one person is happy about working here. Servers come to the bar to complain and I'm not invisible. I can hear everything. This is not acceptable. It's so unprofessional on a steakhouse basis. Just change the name to Steve's food. Don't make it sound high end by calling it Steve's steakhouse. I mentioned my complaint to the bartender and he said it's normal. I warned the new guy to run far away. If this is customer service on the island everywhere, it'll be a rude awakening. Nice interior. It was 4:30 and completely empty. The host led us to a table by the arched windows and it was every bit as gorgeous as it looked from the outside. We enjoyed the view a moment before the server finished hamming it up at the next table. The older middle-aged man approached - sweating with slicked back, sunbleached dirty-blonde hair. "I'm Johnny," he started, adding, "I can tell I'm gonna like you already," pointing briefly at my shirt. "Thanks," I returned. He reached out for a wet handshake. "Sorry, hand's wet," he pulled his hand back and wiped it on his apron before reaching the still-wet hand out to shake my wife's. We ordered drinks. I got the Rum Runner, which was sweet and fruity, but not overly so and nicely offset by how boozy it was. My wife had a Manhattan, which was well-crafted. They were both large drinks and worth the price. As we enjoyed drinks, we discussed eating there. It's expensive, but it would be worth it to enjoy the view a little longer. Johnny came back within two minutes to ask again if we were planning to have food. We told him we're thinking about it, but would like to enjoy our drinks for a bit. Johnny came back within another two minutes and asked us again impatiently. Feeling pressured, I decided to put in an order for bread to get him off our backs. He told us that it was fine for us to hang out, but that if we weren't going to eat that we should move to the dark bar area. We said we'd keep that in mind, understanding this to mean that we shouldn't stick around at the table for a second drink. This was completely reasonable to us, especially, we figured, once the still-empty place started getting guests. Someone sent the very uncomfortable host over to tell me meekly that no outside food or drinks were allowed and I was made to put my sealed water bottle on the floor. Johnny brought the bread out quickly and asked again if we were going to get food. He alluded to a manager who was putting a lot of pressure on him. At this point, we had already decided that the pressure was enough to go somewhere else to eat, and told him we were just going to finish up and go. We ate the bread quickly, though I had lost my appetite. As far as quality goes, it was a serviceable sliced sourdough roll with some butter for $5. Nearly finished, Johnny came back with the check in his hand. "I hate to do this to you," he started in a confrontational tone, "but I warned you." It came out at this time that Johnny was kicking us out of the restaurant for not moving to the dark bar. Filled with what I felt was righteous indignation, I argued with a waiter - Johnny - for the first time in my life. In case you require further credibility, which I completely understand, I worked for several years as a waiter in a country club and have experienced many sour encounters with bad, entitled customers. This was not that. After the way we had been treated I felt obliged to explain my perspective. Johnny and I argued like two apes banging their chests as my wife tried in vain to get anyone's attention and just pay the check. Eventually she was afforded that opportunity, paid quickly, and we left after about 30 total minutes. We walked the streets, stunned by the experience. Once we had both cooled down, it occurred to me to ask my wife: how much did you tip? 20%. A betrayal! And what was it about Johnny that brought out this side of me? Was it his own issues? Was his manager really that bad? Drugs? Avalon's a small island town. Most people are only visitors, there for the weekend. I don't know how many actually live and work on the island, but my guess is that it's in the hundreds. So I asked around. All the locals were surprised. Most described Johnny as a pretty cool guy. Some even had crushes on him. How could this be? It didn't add up based on the man I had interacted with. The next morning at breakfast, we had a stroke of luck. I recognized the guy who brought out our food at The Pancake Cottage as the same guy who worked the door at Steve's Steakhouse. I asked him, "what's the deal with that guy, Johnny?" "Which Johnny?" He asked. "There are four who work there." What are the odds?? He went on to explain that it was "really crazy" there that night and that the manager was really pushing people. Like Johnny had said. As a customer, I don't agree with how he handled any of it. As someone who's had managers less competent than me breathing down my neck while being utterly useless themselves, I recognize this as a systemic issue. Which is why my wife chose to tip 20%, and ultimately why I realized she was right. Folks in restaurants and other minimum-wage jobs aren't treated or paid well. The system is broken. And sometimes, that can make even a reasonable person break. So my wife tipped Johnny 20% because he deserves a living wage, even if he is terrible at his job. TL;DR: -100/10 Drinks were good, bread was ok, don't go here but do tip your waiters read more
