Dodger's Paws - Hobi on a hike

Dodger's Paws

We adopted a young puppy who is only going to max out at about 10 pounds. At her first vet…read moreappointment, we were advised to enroll her in formal training and socialization. We love our veterinarian, and she highly recommended Dodger's Paws. Here is what I'm already loving, 2 weeks into the puppy program. . . Great communication and easy to sign up . Convenient hours for working dog parents . Clean Facility, safe set up . My kids are welcome to attend and participate, and we're ALL learning. . Martha is a wonderful teacher/coach/support. She is patient, she explains the how and the why regarding our puppy's behavior. In addition to learning basic commands, and going over safety guidelines, we are provided with a plethora of tips about happy and healthy dogs. Martha has 4 dogs of her own. She's empathetic, down to earth, very honest, and makes the class fun with her upbeat personality and stellar sense of humor. I love when the hour is coming to a close, and we have the opportunity to ask questions. It's been a great experience, and we are enjoying our sessions at Dodger's Paws very much.

My dog Hobi took a class here in September 2020. That was during Covid, so there were no real…read moreoptions at that time. It was quite a drive for a puppy. They didn't really have any suggestions to help with that. Also, the classes are outside in a warehouse with an open garage door, so it was freezing. I had to dress my dog in a sweater, and I could barely stand to be on the cement floor for the duration. But here's the thing: my dog is a Maltese. Like all Maltese, he is barky, a bit whiney, and a very picky eater. Small dogs are often not food motivated. They had no idea how to deal with that. They would continually ask us to leave because we were a disruption. We literally got kicked out of every class! It was a dog training class, and he wasn't well behaved enough for it? I mean, they knew he was a Maltese when we signed up and paid the hefty price. If what you train is Labs then fine, say so and don't take my money. This is probably a great place to go if you have a lab or a big, food motivated dog, but if you have a small dog then don't waste your time and money. Look elsewhere.

So very grateful for Angela and Nikolett at Naughty to Nice Dog Training. When we introduced our…read morelabradoodle, Marlo, to his first class, he was sweet and eager to learn. He soon evolved into a ball of energy with increased enthusiasm and decreased focus. Angela welcomed him with such patience, kindness, and skill. She helped us understand how to channel all that puppy energy in the right direction and ease our concerns when we felt frustrated -- and we felt frustrated A LOT. With guidance and consistency, Marlo not only earned his STAR Puppy Certificate but also his Canine Good Citizen certification--something we honestly doubted would ever happen. What we appreciated most about Naughty to Nice was how supported we felt as new puppy parents. They celebrated every milestone with us and gave us the confidence to continue building on Marlo's learnings. Marlo indeed went from naughty to nice all thanks to this incredible team.

Toshi, my 14 week Shiba puppy and I came to Nikolett and Angela for a 1:1 private session after our…read morepuppy was having some biting issues and harness/grooming aggression. He overall is very eager to learn and was doing well with his early obedience training but definitely runs the house. Within ONE HOUR, Toshi was able to tolerate the harness, and for the FIRST TIME since he came home, he let me brush him for a minute straight without biting me!!! We got so many great tips and a list of homework to work on until our second private session later this week before we start our AKC STAR Puppy classes (already secured the date!) I cannot thank them enough for their tips, their kind words and efforts towards Toshi and I am confident to believe he will be a great dog with the right tools.

My 2 pups have never been to a daycare or boarding facility before. So, this was a big step for…read morethem. They are both good with dogs at dog parks, been socialized with other pups fine too. However, my girl has been used for service dog work and always with me. We got our second dog this year and they are great playmates at home as she's not needed to work unless I'm indoors.. We are traveling next March for baseball and trying to cover all bases. We will be staying at a dog friendly home, and saw a Camp Bow Wow in AZ a half mile from our stay. Thought it might be more fun for the dogs to go there then stay home 4-5 hours in a strange place so we should check out our local franchise. The staff here was amazing. Very lovely people and encounters with everyone we spoke with. One of the gals mentioned she brings her own fur baby sometimes and that says enough that she trusts the care and treatment here for her own family. So how did mine do? Well, I had my girl go in first. Our second pup has learned to follow her and thought that would be the best introduction for them as he always wants to go where she does. It doesn't help I just too her to the vet for the vaccines needed to visit and had her nails done and anal glands at the same time.. I think she felt the same stress coming here a couple days later. They said she tried to nip when they put her with other pups, but they let her calm down and relax a bit and then she went in and did just fine. Oddly our newest rescue that shakes at every new experience went in just fine.. again, he knew she was there already, so that went okay. I thank the team here for letting my pups destress and go in with the other. My boys dog looked like he was doing leaps and bounds with others on the doggie cam.. it's a bummer my girl just wanted to lay by the gate and wait 4 hours for me. She didn't cry or do anything bad, nor did Camp Bow Wow, she just wasn't thrilled to be there. I was my big bow get some pats and loves as he will run up for attention, but she didn't get any, and I watched the whole time she was gone (yes, It was a big deal for me too to be away from her).. Not sure if they aren't allowed to go up and pet or comfort dogs that are just laying in the corner, but it would be nice if the did. I will take them back a few more times here in Livermore and see how my girl does. I'm not sure he would do great there without her but might try that too as another option. I just appreciate the people here that didn't give up on letting my pups give doggy daycare a try.

I wish I had searched yelp before signing up with this company!!!…read more You can see other yelp reviews at these links - it is one company in the bay area that travels all over, but they have different phone numbers to make you think they are local to you. http://www.yelp.com/biz/superdog-sacramento-2 http://www.yelp.com/biz/superdog-roseville Here is the story - I spoke with the Superdog representative and she explained the program. For $995, it includes 4 lessons and lifetime support. She said that if you need help after the training, they will come out and help you (this turned out to be a lie - when I got the contract, it said only lifetime TELEPHONE support - that should have been a big red flag). Even though that is very expensive, I thought oh, ok, for that kind of money, I guess it is worth it to have this kind of support. So, us being new at being a dog owner, we decide to have the trainer come out for the first lesson on Monday. They don't give you the contract until after the session, and by then it's too late to really do anything other than pay up and sign. Note that the contract gives Superdog all of the rights and you will just obey their demands. There are no refunds regardless of reason, even if the dog dies. Two days later, my mom, who is taking care of the dog, is stressed out and is about to have a nervous breakdown and tells me she can't handle it anymore. OK, so I see that we can't keep the dog. I called Superdog on Thursday and asked them if we could please stop the contract as we won't be keeping the dog (we paid 1/3 of the cost upfront and they would charge the rest the next 2 months). The owner (Dave) answers the phone. So I explain to him the situation, my mom is 70 years old and didn't realize how much work the dog would be, etc. and that we would like to stop the lessons as we won't have the dog for long. He responded in a mean and sarcastic tone with unprofessional phrases including, "Your mom just needs to suck it up and deal with it!". Then he says, well, I can't help you with this, you'll have to talk to the manager. Anyway, the manager works for him, so obviously she tells me that they will not stop charging us. OK, I know it was a long shot to ask to stop the contract, but it was uncalled for, the way he talked to me on the phone. I would not want to do business with people that treat their customers in this manner.
