Horrible experience. Its really just a rough ferry for truckers. Nothing compared to Color Line (which goes from Kiel to Oslo and provides a fantastic cruise experience).
In short:
-service at check-in slow and inefficient - just one gate open (with car)
-cabin nice layout, but not clean. Bad sheets instead of bed sheets. Used "facial" tissue under one pillow. Shampoo empty.
-food (buffet restaurant) between a very non-funny joke and dangerous. Rotten "filet of beef", obviously re-heated from the day before. Very small selection of bottom shelf convenience food. So bad that people talked about it across tables - agreeing though that the fries are good. Brutally overpriced at Euro 35 per adult and EUR 17 for kids. I got a grumpy bum from eating that filth and "enjoyed the facilities" during the night. I could keep my boy from eating moldy grapes, strawberries and crackers.
-the breakfast buffet is lower standard than the most fucked up backpackers hostel in Kasakstan. Two choices of cheapo cold cuts, two choices of cheapo cheese, some jam. Powder-egg-scramble of the most horrible kind. Inedible bacon that looks plain dangerous. This "pleasure" at Euro 15.
-returning to the cabin on the way back we discovered there was no cabin service. No fresh towls (and no way to hang four to dry). Shampoo still empty. When asking for fresh towls and shampoo I've been informed that "second day cabin service we do no more". Quality!
The trip costs the same as Color Line. Both brings you to Sweden (the border is just an hour away from Oslo. Both are a true experience - just Stena being utterly horrible and Colorline being magic. If you do not HAVE to go to Gothenburg, do not go with Stena. Even driving is better. read more
