There is street parking available but a dedicated lot across the street. You have to be mindful of the cars that pass in the area since with hills people tend to go fast. The soccer field is located towards the back of the school. There is a small playground (outdated) but the smaller kiddos seemed to like it. The field is maintained and there was even a snack bar open when we visited. I as a former student feel very unhappy with my time there. I was bullied and went to admin about it, and no change was made to the behavior. For a school that wants parent collaboration, they do a very poor job. I'm very grateful for the few teachers that made me feel valued and accepted, but my problem is with the principle and admin. In a school like the coop school which is supposed to be inclusive, students should feel like their voice is heard and taken to heart, but I felt the opposite. They constantly oppress the voices of their students and their parents. I truly believe that this is not a safe and inclusive environment for children.

Unfortunately, school's executive director (Tom) and the board that is supposed to oversee him have largely destroyed an otherwise great school. Executive director has made many changes that hurt the students and community, many long term, highly qualified teachers were let go. Administrative staff who knew all kids by names and did a great job running the school were let go. Instead of experienced teachers they have put people with little or no experience. Kids have no continuity with teachers or education program. The board has people whose kids are going to Linda Vista campus and have a quiet understanding with executive director that they don't get in Directors way as long as their kids at LV don't see any negative changes. They do not know the bylaws, they don't know Brown Act, they are not doing anything except rubber stamping decisions. They are afraid to talk to parents. They are completely unwilling to act as the board and have failed the job they signed up for. The legal counsel to the director and the board from Procopio is not helping the school or community. Misinterpreting the Brown Act and giving advise that hurts students and community is not "protecting school's interest". What is the school if there is no staff and no kids? Sorry, but we are done with our kids being used for experiments in poor governance. There are only one or two good teachers left at Mountain View. There are a few decent teachers at Linda Vista, but even those teachers are now looking for other jobs because they have seen what was done to the staff at Mountain View. Many parents who were actively supporting staff and the school on daily basis have transferred their kids and left the school over the last year. The firings of staff and exodus of remaining staff and kids/parents in summer of 2019 has completely devastated the school.

We had not originally planned to send our children to private school, but the challenges of pandemic-era remote learning at our highly rated public school led us to explore smaller, independent-school alternatives. That experience showed us how important a relationship-based learning environment is for helping students feel engaged, challenged, and supported. We are grateful for the wonderful faculty and staff and the positive effect they have had not only on our children's love for learning but also their personal and social-emotional growth. From the outside, TCPS may not appear to be a top-rated school, but inside it is filled with warmth, kindness, respect, engaging learning experiences, and strong family involvement. We feel incredibly fortunate to have found TCPS.

We desired a small focused experience with dedicated teachers and faith base curriculum. What we got far exceeded our expectations, the teachers are so caring, creative, and focused on our child's individual needs. Each of my daughters is thriving in her class and is known by all teachers and staff. The academics are rigorous, but the teachers presented them in a way that keeps the kids engaged. They come home knowing far more than I would have ever hoped for, both in traditional academics and in faith curriculum. The school is not afraid of new technology and leverages AI and group learning approaches that would not be possible in a larger school. My children have been benefited greatly from this approach. One of the most important aspects for me is that the school does not tolerate isolating or bullying behavior. My fourth grader was distracted in her public school experience by 'mean girls' but at St Paul's, she is friends with each girl in her class and has often commented on how grateful she is to have no cliques or strife. This is so rare and is a testament to the hard work of the teachers and staff. Being members of the St. Paul's school community has increased my husband's and my faith as well. On a hard days, the staff has taken time to walk with us or pray. On great days they celebrate with us. We feel like we belong here as well, not just our children. Highly recommended on every front.

Even at just three years old, my child is being exposed to a level of intentional instruction and thoughtful rigor that is exceptional. What makes St. Paul's especially remarkable is its ability to balance strong academics with rich, play-based learning experiences that foster curiosity, creativity, and independence. Just as importantly, the faith-based foundation woven throughout the day is something truly special. My child is not only growing academically, but also developing character, compassion, and a sense of belonging. The combination of these elements creates an environment that is truly second to none.

Let me start by saying, this review is long overdue and our child is only in Pre-K!…read more The Evans School is more than a school, it's a family. At the core of this family is The Evan's School's "21 values." These 21 values serve as the foundation for the children's development. While most kids who attend a private school in La Jolla come from hard-working established families, the goal is aimed at developing the children into good-hearted and kind human beings.   Every morning starts with the pledge of allegiance and The Evans Pledge, " I promise myself today, to feel, to think, to speak and to act, only in accord with those things which are good and true and beautiful." How's that to start your day? ;) In a discussion with a group of well-educated parents whose children also attend Evan's, the question came up about investing in your child's development in earlier vs. later years. Everyone agreed that it's all about investing in the foundation of learning now in the younger years. This sets the stage for learning and gives them the tools they need to breeze through junior high school, high school and college if they choose to attend. Several Evans Alumni go on and attend prestigious colleges and many go straight to entrepreneurial endeavors or perhaps lives of service in the military. Regardless of what the student ends up doing later in life, the foundation for learning and The Evans values are engrained in each and every student so that they go on to become GOOD HUMANS.  If you're still reading and this resonates with you, then I suggest you set up a private tour of the school. That being said, I'm writing this during the COVID-19 pandemic and the kids are currently staying home. Unlike other schools, The Evans School immediately shifted gears and went to online learning leveraging Zoom and other software platforms so the kids could resume the much-needed structure and environment that they crave. I'm not going to lie, this was also much needed for our own sanity having at least one child attending school Monday - Friday.  I could not possibly give The Evans School a high enough rating. It's the type of place that creates raving fans and most importantly good humans. Alumni now send their children to the school. They continually honor grandparents and our military. It's not for everyone as it is more traditional in a world that seems to have abandoned more traditional values. I personally chose a path of service as a firefighter/paramedic and entrepreneur. My wife and I will continue to do whatever it takes to send our son to this amazing school because our priority is developing a strong foundation in learning while simultaneously instilling the values that create extraordinary humans.

In all, I feel that Bishop's (where I graduated) and La Jolla Country Day School (which I attended for junior high school) are the two best private schools in town. A Bishop's education unlocks the doors to a superior college education (coming from Bishop's, I was accepted at every college I applied to, including Harvard, Amherst College (which I attended), Brown, Dartmouth, Univ. of Pennsylvania, Princeton and U.C.S.D. My calculus book that I used at Bishop's was the same I used (at a higher level in college, of course) at Amherst College. Today, at Bishop's students have all the usual liberal arts classes - chemistry, biology, physics, math up to and including Advanced Placement AB and BC Calculus, English, history, art history, music, voice, studio art, painting, pottery, and languages (Today they may choose Chinese in addition to the usual Spanish, French, Latin), but nowadays they have advanced computer classes, even virtual reality programming classes. Bishop's prepares you for Advanced Placement (AP) classes - I took and receives 5s (the highest score possible) in seven subjects, and they also have International Baccalaureate (IB) classes. These classes give you college credit and may allow you to skip your freshman year in college. Bishop's produces National Merit Scholars (I was one) and semifinalists regularly. The atmosphere is positive, liberal, free spirited and serious, all at once. Students are prepared at a minimum for college (even at a place like Amherst College I was still a better writer than anyone in my college class), but also for success in life in general by teaching or instilling values of education, ethics, patience, healthy competitiveness, ambition, etiquette and much more. Seniors enjoy their own special "rec room" that they paint each year in a lively fashion. A yearly tradition is the theft and hiding by the junior class of the senior bench which is on the lawn in front of the rec room. Class spirit is encouraged with class mascots and division of each class into the Mighty Golds (I was one) and the Royal Purples. Although Bishop's is technically Episcopalian, and we do attend chapel weekly, all faiths are embraced and the chaplain himself often speaks privately to students who are not Christian, such as Muslims, exchanging religious views with them. If you'd like your child to enjoy one of the best high school educations money may buy, consider Bishop's. Bishop's is now 6th through 12th grades. Full and partial scholarships are available for select students.
