After the service, I found my piano 'losing weight'--it began to waddle front and back, and the gallery refused to return to correct the stability issue. Most concerningly, I personally witnessed their authorized tuner removing a metal hook from the cylinder/wooden rod on the right side of my Model K and replacing it with a plastic part. During the covid lockdown my wife and I decided to re-engage our piano practice once again. We played on a digital piano I had with me since post-college days. After a few months we got a card in the mail indicating that the Steinway piano gallery was open again for in person appointments only. On a whim we decided to pay a visit. My wife called to schedule an appointment with Chrissy, the manager, and it was a really straightforward process. She asked a few questions around our interest in Steinway, what models we may be considering, and for whom is the piano being purchased for. We soon realized that these are reasonable questions to better understand the buyers intent. We showed up during our appointment time and Chrissy was there to welcome us to the gallery. We had the whole gallery to ourselves. The various models of interest were already prepared and Chrissy spent sometime explaining the value and artistry of Steinway before demonstrating the instruments to us. Chrissy is quite the pianist and can make each pianos sing. We had plenty of time to explore the pianos of interest. We left feeling very satisfied as we experienced the Steinway sound. Ive not touched a grand piano in years now. However i know greatness when i see it. As a child Steinway's were always at the top of the bar and after all these years, they still are. I can't believe that they don't allow to play and try the touch of piano. I didn't make an appointment and just walk into the store to see if there is any piano I potentially buy but the first question from the lady from the store is asking if anyone can play piano and what kind of piano I owned previously before say greeting. I am professional pianist and just move into the town to Bay Area. How arrogant the owner or manager of the store( Chinese lady). Then she didn't allow to try and play the piano to feel the touch. Isn't it insane not to allowed customers to try piano at piano shop?!! I never experienced this kind of rude retail store shopping. I definitely not go again that store. Can't find a place better than this if you are a real piano lover! You can find all different levels of the best pianos--- from upright to 9feet professional concert ones. When you listen to the amazing sound and feel the touch of a Steinway, you won't want to even look at a Yamaha anymore. I love Chrissy H. She is the best piano sales! So professional and can always try her best to give you advice to get your dream piano. I bought a K52 from her five years ago, and now I am thinking of upgrading to a model M. I am pretty sure it will be another very pleasant experience. Go find Chrissy! She won't disappoint you. I would definitely give her more than five stars if there's an option. read more

Wow, I just called to find out if the store sold Steinway parts (little rubber pads to protect the lid when you close it), and when the woman on the phone told me they didn't sell parts I asked if she could tell me where to obtain the parts. She went into a long monologue about how it depended who I bought the piano from and started to list all of the different places on a piano that used pads (clearly didn't listen to my explanation). Acceptable answers would have been to suggest I contact a local Steinway certified service person, recommend a web site, or contact Steinway New York, or even better to put me on the phone with someone who could answer my very simple question. The manager, Chrissy Huang, was very rude. She came across as extremely arrogant and followed us around the store essentially asking us where we worked, and how much our income was. When we declined to share, she made some comment about the pianos being very expensive and went back to her desk. Add the signs everywhere stating not to touch any of the pianos and the whole experience was unpleasant. Unfortunately, she claimed to manage the SF store as well so you may need to go to a Steinway further away to avoid giving her your business. read more

UPDATE: After this review, we finally got a call back to arrange for a piano tuner to come by. Because of the delay, we even got the tuning for free. We walked in yesterday to thank them and the ladies couldn't have been friendlier. Apparently, there had been a miscommunication., Old review: We walked into this store twice now asking for a simple recommendation: a piano tuner for our Steinway. Both times she noted down our address promising to get back to us - we never heard back. If you invest this kind of money in a piano, you'd think you would get better service. When we start to look at Steinway in this shop, she gave us an overall knowledge of the difference of all models, and do the best of what she can to educate us to choose a right one. She is also a pianist, and has deep passion on music and also care about her customers. We visited this store yesterday to try pianos, as we are considering upgrading. We made an appt. (necessary during the pandemic), and the manager, Chrissy, was very accommodating. When we arrived, she was professional but very warm. We talked for a bit and learned so much from her before we even tried any of the pianos. Because the primary pianist in our family is my 9-year-old son, he was the one who tried the pianos, and I feared she might not take us very seriously as he's just a young kid, but that wasn't the case at all. She was so kind, complimentary, and encouraging. She is an accomplished pianist herself, and she also played for us. Overall, a wonderful experience! read more

For classical vocal instructors, Steinways are de rigueur for training and concerts. The piano sound is on the brilliant side, so singers need to be familiar with the power of the intrsument, and with proper technique, be able to sing with and over a Steinway. We had a great experience with Chrissy at the Steinway Piano Gallery in Los Altos when shopping for a grand piano for our studio. She was able to offer us both brand new pianos as well as relatively new pianos previously used in concert halls at colleges in the area. I went to this location with my wife on the last day of 2016. Chrissy Huang was rushing us to purchase the piano that we must pay in full; I need to pay maximum 5,000USD with Visa, and the rest with personal check for the total about 38,000 plus tax. Since I decided not to buy it on that day, her attitude has changed quickly, and raised her voice, and rushing us out of the door. She told us that she needs to go home for the new year with the family, and wasted her time for us. I was totally unhappy and upset with her service and attitude, and I'd never come back to that location again. We are planning to go to SF to buy the K-52 that we love. read more

As appears from other reviews the lady salesperson at this place could improve her service. When I walked in and started playing a piano, she had quite an attitude and asked if I'd ever played a Steinway before. Err, only the most ubiquitous piano brand at any music school or conservatory?? Lady, I've played hundreds. Then we got into an argument about different piano brands. Lol. I said one of my favorites was Steingraeber, since I played a magnificent one brought out for concerts at the Kennedy Center in DC. I give her one extra star for changing her tune at the end and being a little bit nicer, but really she could vastly improve how she treats potential customers. read more

Aside from buying a piano, the manager Chrissy Huang has made the experience unforgettable. I've been to piano stores all over the world, Ms. Huang is more knowledgable than anyone I've ever met. Later I learned that she herself is also a professional pianist, and a very much sought-after piano teacher. Her students are prize winners at competitions. That explains why she has such high level professionalism! Most importantly, Ms. Huang is the most patient piano store manager I've ever encountered. I consider myself a tough customer, because I'm extremely selective about pianos. I know piano salesmen don't like pianists customers because they generally don't buy the most expensive pianos, at the same time are very picky about pianos. Ms. Huang took her time, never rushed me into anything, and let me ask questions after questions endlessly, over a very long period of time. She is such a piano enthusiast, I am so touched by her assistance, and very moved by her passion for the instrument. There are other stores selling Steinways, but this Los Altos Steinway Piano Gallery offers more than the instruments. I was educated, I was taken care of, and I am forever grateful. I spent years looking for the perfect piano, but Chrissy Huang finally helped me to find it. I was walking through downtown Los Altos, past Steinway's very modern building, and saw the beautiful pianos in the window, and went inside... I eventually selected a new Steinway Model B, and could not be happier. The customer service is FANTASTIC (Chrissy came to my house to supervise the move, because I had a staircase, and help place the piano), the piano is the best, and now I am refining my repertoire to invite some friends over for a performance. I visited this very small showroom hoping to buy a piano. The shop was empty except for me and the two saleswomen. I found Chrissy Huang to be generally uncommunicative but she managed to be condescending and insulting nonetheless.
