There is plenty of parking and a small picnic area and playground by the lot. Also near the parking lot are two primitive outhouses that are pitch black during the day so you would need to take a flashlight inside and watch out for spiders! It's a bit of a walk on some packed and loose gravel up to the fort. It's fun to explore inside and around the outside of the fort. In the back of the fort there is a contemporary climate-controlled bathroom with changing table and a small museum. Plan about 1 to 2 hours to explore. Please know that the immediate area has no restaurants/gas stations close by.

Often hours are cancelled due to staffing.. very good free weights and machines but moderate aerobic equipment. this area has slot of seniors but but no machines to accomodate (nustep limited recumbent equipment. usage is not regulated with often individuals staying on equipment over an hour at peak times. Facility often leaks terribly due to flat roofs that went out in 60'S. strong point is cleanliness. but does not enforce showering before swimming and on days with aquatics class, often a sludge on surface from oils and perfumes is evident mandatory showers is essential

Ste Gen was able to combine a large pool, gym w/ free weights, indoor courts, spinning class area, rent-able party room and even a library all in one massive building. The pool has a large slide, a swirling whirlpool, basketball net and one of the best wade in kiddie pool with a tower that dumps buckets of water every minute (kids are fascinated). My family rented the party room for another event. The room is nice sized with a full kitchen & even a laundry room. The cute little girls running the facility have always been small town friendly about our wants. As a bonus, there is a motorcycle track next to the parking lot that riders are getting enough air to "shock & awe" young & old alike. This great facility is along a long paved walking path that the city planners have winding down the middle of fields. This urban planning seems "visionary" in the middle of empty fields, but I am impressed.

On one side is a playground while the other side has 2 pit toilet buildings labeled "any gender." There was also a grill. The area down the road has the remnants of mounds where the fort ramparts were located. There's a sign which explains the history. In between the two sites there's an old cemetery. Near the entrance there's a sign for the Menard home located down the road not too far. Don't forget to visit it- the architecture is interesting even if the house is closed.

The tiny town has a church that offers services each Saturday at 3:30. The Bell Historic Site gives a short presentation and a viewing of the bell (just press the button twice!). Great history here and we also found a few fun geocaches while here. This is true rural America - farmers in the fields harvesting corn and soybeans, folks gathering for church, waving as they go by. They have gun demonstrations, flag raising and lowering ceremonies, people dress in period costumes. It costs $5 per car (what super cheap right) to park and you can walk back in time. We walk up to watch a juggling demonstration, they bring kids and adults from the crowd to get everyone excited. Yes, you get to see men waking around in buckskin and French and British soldiers. You can buy buttons made from bones, a fox hide or a buffalo burger. This is held every year on the first weekend in June. After a fun day at the fort Prairie du Rocher has food stands and you can stop and watch the parade at 6 o'clock. If you are wanting to get out of the city and see learn a little history, this is the place.

This is a project of love for the community. A retired school teacher and her husband bought the…read moreold bank in town and converted it to a public library. One of the safes is the children's area, it makes them feel special. Shocking this building has two safes, so in the smaller safe they have the history of the area in this safe. They already have a 1000 books, the owners gave us a private tour. She told us that they get called weekly to come and get books, surprisingly the donations are in really great shape. If they get a double of a book they already have, they keep the nicest one and put the other in the free box (yes, they do not ask you to pay for a book). This is a non profit and anyone, yes anyone can came and check out a book in their library. Can you tell this woman loves for people to read. They survive on donations.
