On the porch, the late afternoon wine and charcuterie is a lovely ending to the day. They have the largest Magnolia tree I have seen. you can sit under it and at night, it has lights mingled with the branches. I have stayed at many B&B's, this is one of my favorites.

We stayed in the Crow's Nest. This beautiful room was designed with a ship in mind. The walls and ceiling were paneled with wood. You had to climb to the top of the house, but it was worth it! We had a VERY early morning appointment to sail. Nevertheless, we had a delicious breakfast of fresh fruit and omelettes. They stored our bikes and luggage while we sailed. In the evening, we enjoyed a happy hour with craft beers and wine. We loved our stay and would recommend it to anyone.

This was the closest thing open and after a bit of research on Oriental, I just decided to check out the town and the Croaker Festival instead of using it as a home base for Beaufort (about an hour or so away). The Captain's Quarters was such a beautiful place to stay. I was apprehensive because their website is old and the information wasn't quite the same as it was on airbnb.com. I got ahold of the manager, Linda, and that helped. The place used to be a traditional B&B, but now it is just a place to stay with a kitchen you can cook in. I stayed in the Blue Room, and it was clean and beautiful. I had a little en suite bathroom with a shower. Right outside my room was a side door to the wrap around porch, an amenity that I took full advantage of while I was there. There was only one other couple staying in the Quarters while I was there, so the house was super quiet. It is an old Victorian, so there are creaky floor boards and my door was a bit difficult to open and shut depending on the humidity. One of the greatest things about this place is the location. It's right across the street from the Old Theater, and just a short walk to the harbor. I went for the Croaker Festival and it was great to have a place so close to everything without being right in the center of all the activity. If I ever get down to Oriental again, I know where I'll be staying.

The room that we were given smelled of ammonia and was in terrible condition. There were plenty of spiders and bugs scurrying around the beds which is not surprising given how dirty the room was. The shower had no pressure whatsoever and the water intensely smelled like iron. I understand wanting to stay away from soulless chains but in this case a little bit more corporate style management and cleanliness would go a long way.

The beds are less than a year old, firm mattresses, with Serta pillows. The furniture is solid and attractive. It does not have all the amenities, but it does have all the basics and at a good price. They strive to meet any request you have. Their restaurant, Sharky's is very good and reasonably priced. This is my second visit and I strongly recommend them.
