Ghent is near the top of my list of cities to visit in Europe. It doesn't get the same notoriety as places like Paris, Amsterdam, Rome or Brussels, but it is one of the nicest cities on the continent in which to spend some time. It is very walkable and the highlight is strolling around town at night to enjoy the beautifully lit buildings along the river and even through the winding streets. There are many excellent restaurants in Ghent and several museums worth visiting. Gravensteen Castle is the most memorable visit I made amongst the attractions, though the Cathedral deserves mention as well. St. Pieter's Station is also an admirable architectural icon. If you have the chance to visit this terrific city, you won't regret taking the time to do so. read more
