I visited the St.Vinnies in Escanaba late in the afternoon on a Friday, as soon as I began to shop I was greeted by who I thought was a friendly man who happened to be 6'4". Almost immediately lights started to turn off. It was 3:55pm so I figured someone had accidentally hit a light switch. I was just there for a coffee maker as mine gave out. I also check out the clothing when I go to St.Vinnies. I noticed that this large man was watching me CLOSELY like I was a shoplifter!? He approached me and said (very curtly) it's 4 o'clock, I replied "thanks I have a watch. At this point I had no idea who this guy was. He nodded to someone and the whole store went dark! He told me (as if I should know) we're closed you need to get checked out! I asked him if they were starting they're weekend early, admittedly I was a bit smart assed with him but the response I received was aggressive and ugly especially for a retail (manager, owner?). I was told that we wanna go home like anybody else so let's wrap it up! I honestly felt a little threatened by this cause I'm disabled and a whole lot smaller than that guy. He literally followed me to the register! The woman behind the counter was really snotty repeating the we wanna go home like everyone else among other just unnecessarily rude comments. After I said that I wasn't aware of the 4:00 closing time and that every other retail company is open till 5:00. She slapped my change on the counter and turned her back! So I bundled up the coffee maker and the two t-shirts and a pair of jeans and left without a bag being offered saying I would never be back! I heard good or something to that effect.
Before I became unable to work I was a restaurant manager for 20+ years. If I EVER heard an employee of mine, directly or indirectly speaking to a customer like that I would and did fire them on the spot! I would escort that fired employee to the door like I was!
I'm not generally someone who writes reviews but I feel like people who think that they are shopping at a Christian based, charitable organization who relies 100% on donated inventory are being 100% misled! These stores are privately owned! I feel duped. I've shopped there for years and have never had a bad experience, until now.
I hope this will help you at least ask them if they are privately owned and if so why do they represent themselves as a charitable organization. Whom I've donated assorted stuff to over the years. If you still want to shop there, please know that the profits are going to a person who(by the way he was dressed) was not in need of charity!! read more
