Nothing glamorous about coming to shop here, but this store is an essential one in the Upper…read moreMichigan town of Iron River. People bring donations of clothing, books or household items, which are in turn resold at startlingly low prices. Located on the edge of the "main street" shopping district, St. Vincent DePaul has a small parking area in front. Walk inside and you get the familiar "stale old stuff" smell - like clothes that need to be aired out. The first part of the store is all clothing for men, women and children. We rarely have found something good in this section. A little farther back, there's old records, cassettes and CD's in bins. Nothing fantastic unless you're into old-time country music or some really obscure audio documentaries. Then there's a kids section with toys and puzzles. We have found a few items there over the years, but it's mainly geared towards babies and some of the stuff just looks old. Best finds in the store are in the books section in back. We've bought a lot of their children's books on our annual visits to Michigan. For 25 cents, you can get some books that look barely used. Another area richly stocked is the section with dinnerware, mugs, glassware and kitchen gadgets. If you're looking for cheap, everyday dinnerware, chances are you'll find something you'll like with all the variety they carry, collected from local estates, I presume. While the Goodwill in Iron Mountain is a better store overall, St. Vincent de Paul is worth a glance anyway. You might come away with a bargain.

He swore and kept pounding his finger on a "No Dumping" sign taped to the back door. We were standing right there and rang the bell. St. Vincent's in Iron River can kiss off- I'll take my donations to Crystal Falls where they realize that donations are what make them possible.
