And they live behind the scenes carrying the Lords heart to Love God and to Truly Love people. The way they've expressed genuine desire to see life transformed by the Hands of God is truly refreshing coming all the way from Washington. They don't leave it at simply wanting an encounter of Jesus for those around them, but place into action the steps to ushering people into His presence and a life lived out for Jesus. As a parishioner of the Basilica, I want to offer you and others another view of your misperception of the wait for admission that you had after you arrived late for Mass recently. The reason the ushers hold closed the floor to ceiling glass doors to delay admission for late comers is to preserve the respect being offered to the procession of the priest and others assisting in the celebration of the Mass. After some early prayers and singing, the doors are opened for tardy attendees to enter. We are often late and are among the other very few people waiting. It's not intended to be a road block as you imply. It also serves as a subtle reminder to get to Mass on time. It sounds like you didn't wait around for the doors to open because you likely missed the full personal experience of Fr. Jim's celebration of the Mass, one of his consistently outstanding homilies, and the glorious singing of the choir. Jay, I encourage you to come back to another Mass, arrive on time, get a good seat to your liking, and benefit from the full experience of a wonderful Catholic celebration at the Basilica. I was raised Catholic, but because of all the controversy with that faith I became disillusioned with Catholicism and began my long trip of trying to find a faith I felt comfortable with. This was the church and this is my faith now. This is a fabulous community of families who welcomed me with open arms!!! The parish is wonderfully active with the Norfolk area with the annual Greek Festival and through the celebration of Easter the parishioners warmly welcomes anyone who wants to come and celebrate this beautiful holiday. I love the Greek people and have come to consider this my home away from home. Please come and meet Father George Bessinas and the staff who assist him with the Sunday Orthros and Liturgy as it is a beautiful way to celebrate our Lord Jesus Christ from the day of His birth on Christmas to the morning of His rising to His Father on Easter.
