First of all, I should start by saying I'm not a massively religious person... In fact I wouldn't…read morecall myself religious at all but The Priory inspires a complete calm and comfort everytime I step inside. Considering its size (it holds my school's carol service every year) and vast stonework it still manages to feel snug; a soothing hideaway from a blustery Lancastrian day. The building is absolutely beautiful; a grade 1 listed building with antique flags from local regiments and organisations. Inside the floor is stone, the pews are a beautiful dark varnished wood and there are numerous huge, sweeping arches, as well as exquisite, intricate stained glass windows. The choir stalls have lots of lovely, little, red lamps evenly interspersed which add a real warmth to the building. (In fact on the website 'the carved choir stalls with their misericords are nationally famous'). The Priory feels steeped in history. Indeed, the site has been used for religious worship dating back to the Saxons era and to the north of the building there is an ancient Roman baths site. The neighbour, just opposite is Lancaster Castle (another superb place to visit when you go to Lancaster). Taking the footpath running alongside the front of the building, you are treated to fabulous, clear views across Lancaster and Morecambe and if you continue along this track, after a couple of minutes you'll reach the River Lune and the Millennium bridge. Also you are only a short walk down the cobbled streets into Lancaster city centre if you fancy nipping off for a spot of lunch. The location could not be better. Today, I attended a funeral at The Priory and cannot praise the service highly enough. Rev Chris Newlands delivered a heartfelt service which really portrayed the character of my dear friend's grandmother with absolute sincerity and warmth. He read a eulogy written by the family and had clearly practised carefully to get the tone just right. I laughed, I cried and I sang my heart out to Jerusalem. (In fact, the fabulous organist must also be praised for his exceptional talent and work!) However, I'll end where I started, you do not need to be religious to visit The Priory. If you have a love of great architecture, a love of history or crave an enigmatic yet peaceful spot to sit and contemplate your thoughts, The Priory can deliver on all fronts.
