I am delighted to say my husband Dr. Ted and I found a church to be part of. The recent firestorm…read morehas disrupted the flow of our own life, but knowing this church is still here for me is truly encouraging. They help the community in a tangible way and are part of supporting Redwood Gospel, welcoming everyone regardless of who they are. It is a church for those who do not like church, like my husband who really enjoys attending here when his working schedule allows it. When I heard Andy, our charismatic pastor, speak about how he was brought up and raised as a missionary kid in Brazil, and how he calls this place home, I connected with Andy even more. I grew up in Chile but came to the USA in 1972. Here in California I got married, raised my two children and became a university educator of elementary and bilingual teachers. In Santa Rosa I started a second life after divorce and getting a job at SSU. I met Dr. Ted in 1998, got married and have been so blessed in so many ways. But home is still Chile for me. That longing Andy and I feel will someday be replaced with the true home Jesus says He has prepared for us who believe in Him. I am looking forward to get back into normalcy after this disrupted firestorm, and serve this awesome place in so many more ways. The church is not the building-is the people. I have found true caring brothers and sisters in the midst of confusion and chaos. God is so good and so real! It is by His loving care that our house was speared in the Fountaingrove area. A miracle indeed...To Him be all the Glory! In His love, Dr. Ellie

St. Teresa of Avila Church - Simple, reverent interior invites one to sit and rest

The oldest church in Sonoma County... a California State Historic Landmark…read more This beautiful Catholic Church sits on a hilltop in the town of Bodega. Does O'Farrell Street in San Francisco sound familiar to SF locals? Jasper O'Farrell donated the redwood lumber to build the church on this land. In San Francisco, they named a street that runs from Market Street to Van Ness after him. Unfortunately, my husband says that it's not in one the best parts of San Francisco. Anyway, I digress. The church is just minutes away from the Sonoma Coast and Bodega Bay. We've visited the church at least 3x in the past, we tend to stop by here each time we're in Bodega, unfortunately, during each visit the church is closed and we were only able to stop and enjoy the outside, it is pretty and well maintained. It has a peaceful setting. During Covid they hold masses on the steps of the church (weather permitting). In cases of rain or extreme weather masses are cancelled for the day. The church appeared in Alfred Hitchcock's horror-thriller film, "The Birds" and it looks just the same as it did in the 60's. If you are a Hitchcock fan definitely make a stop at St Teresa church to snap a few photos. Hitchcock himself attended services in the church during the filming of his movie. Behind is the Potter Schoolhouse which also had scenes from the movie. If you've seen "The Birds," you've seen that school. For the Ansel Adams fan... Ansel Adams made the church the theme of a black and white photograph. The photo had been taken in 1953. Google "Church and Road" (Bodega, California) Nicholas Green - the tragic story of a 7-yr old boy who was shot and killed while vacationing with his family in Italy... and the parents' decision to donate Nicholas's heart, liver, kidneys and other organs to seven recipients. A memorial service was held in this church and Nicholas was buried in a small cemetery near the church. A view from the front of St Teresa has a picturesque scenery of the area (less the angry crows). Review #2181

I attended a 5pm Saturday mass that drew different participants from well-dressed women to local fisherman to bright young people, a good community. Even if you're not Catholic and even if you're not a believer, take time to check out this peaceful structure and sit a while.

Hessel Church has been a game changer for me, and switching from the Mormon Church (yes, the Church…read moreof Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints--let's just call them the "Mormons" for the sake of simplicity) has felt like escaping a reality show where the only prize was a lifetime supply of bland casseroles. I mean, at Hessel, it's like I've traded in my dreary church attire for a vibrant Hawaiian shirt--bright, colorful, and oh-so-comfortable! Let's start with the pastors. At the Mormon Church, I encountered some serious "stiff-upper-lip" syndrome, which made for sermons that were about as thrilling as watching paint dry. But at Hessel, we've got pastors who are practically stand-up comedians in clerical collars! Pastor Rick and pastor Ken has the knack for weaving in punchlines that leave the whole congregation in stitches. I remember one Sunday when he compared our spiritual journeys to a GPS recalculating when we miss a turn. He said, "No matter how lost you feel, God is always there yelling, 'Recalculating!' but He doesn't charge you extra for the U-turn!" I nearly fell out of my seat with laughter--and thankfully, it was a padded pew! And speaking of pews, the seating arrangement at Hessel is a delightful mix of comfort and camaraderie. No more stiff wooden benches that make you question your life choices as you try to maintain proper posture for an hour. At Hessel, it's like sitting in your favorite recliner while sipping a hot cocoa--except it's Sunday, and you're surrounded by fellow believers who actually want to engage with you. The pastor might even crack a joke about "holy recliners" during his sermon, and suddenly it's a church service and a comedy show rolled into one. Let's talk about the music! At the Mormon Church, "choir practice" often felt like a serious business meeting where everyone was afraid to hit a wrong note. At Hessel, we have a band that can only be described as a holy mashup of rock and roll and gospel soul. I've never been so tempted to join the choir until I realized I'd probably sound like a cat in a blender. But the beauty of Hessel is that everyone can join in--off-key singing is practically encouraged! During one particularly energetic worship song, Pastor Dave even announced, "If you're singing badly, just remember--God loves a joyful noise!" I took that as my personal theme for the service. Then there's the community! At the Mormon Church, community events sometimes felt like mandatory attendance at a family reunion where nobody talked to each other. But at Hessel Church, the congregation is like your quirky aunt and uncle who show up with the best stories and more laughter than you can handle. I remember my first Sunday at Hessel when a friendly couple invited me over for coffee after service. The conversation flowed so easily, I almost forgot how to drink without spilling my coffee everywhere! They shared stories that had me laughing so hard, I almost choked on my donut. The only choking happening here is on laughter--no judgment, just joy! In conclusion, if you're considering switching from the Mormon Church to Hessel Church, I can't recommend it enough! It's a place where laughter and faith go hand in hand, where the sermons are as engaging as a Netflix binge, and the community feels like family (the good kind--no awkward silences or long speeches about potato salad). Hessel Church has become my sanctuary of joy, laughter, and a whole lot of "recalculating" moments. So, thank you, Hessel Church, for showing me that faith doesn't have to be stuffy and solemn--it can be a riot! Five stars, and I'd give more if I could!

I ended up moving here and kept up with attending Services at SH but not much in the way of a deeper person to person connection that I had with my former church(of 23 years!). I also appreciate the organization that takes place for a church this size. One more noticeable feature, all the opportunities I see to volunteer! Thank you for being so welcoming in so many ways!
