I saw a couple reviews that mentioned the church's Southern Baptist Convention roots and just…read morewanted to speak to that. I understand the resistance, truly I do. The past year that I have been in Boston has involved a lot of researching denominations and trying to understand them and the SBC certainly is a hard one to grapple with for many. But no matter how many times I've ventured elsewhere, I *always* come back to Hope Fellowship. Mostly, that is because I'm convinced that Hope Fellowship is led by godly, prayerful people and that the Spirit is bearing fruit here. Again, trust me, I get the doctrinal disputes and I struggle with the SBC on certain issues. At Hope, the leadership doesn't shy from hard topics but it also doesn't give black-and-white, pre-scripted answers; nor does it give wishy-washy, ungrounded ones. I've only ever seen Hope leadership tackle highly sensitive subjects in a nuanced, thoughtful, and humble way. Even if you don't agree 100%, you know you can share your perspective with leadership and be heard and loved. Furthermore, personally, I've found that this church has a refreshing way of incorporating confession and also rejoicing in God's mercy. During each service we have a call-and-response of a Psalm and then a prayer of confession and then a passage reminding us of how we have been redeemed from that sin. It's so balanced and thoughtful and, to me, really models what we see throughout Acts as people come to faith--a rhythm of repentance and joyfully accepting God's grace. If you are looking for a church that does not shy from tough questions and that will continually extend the love of Christ to you and motivate you to do the same for others, this place does that.

What I…read morelove about the church is the commitment to serve the community and the fervency of the leadership to remain faithful to biblical truth and to see God change peoples lives. In terms of theology, the church is a Calvinistic Baptist church, that really seeks to be faithful to the scriptures. With reference to another reviewer's comments the church's beliefs on homosexuality would be consistent with the teaching of the Bible: that homosexuality is sinful. I am certain that the congregation and leaders would welcome homosexuals who are not intolerant of that belief, and who wish to know more about who we are. If you feel that the belief that homosexuality is wrong is unacceptable, then this is not the place for you.

Felt unwelcome and upon further research into the teachings(by talking to members and delving into the website) we found that LGBT people would never ever be fully accepted into this congregations fold. Unlike other churches it seems this baptist based church will not open its hearts to others that are not what they perceive as christian-like.

I went to other churches and people were nice and friendly (as all churches tend to be), but I never felt like I fit in..oftentimes, people have already formed their cliques or were already overwhelmingly big to really find your niche... However, when i came to this church, people do more than the "hi and bye and hope to see you next sunday and have a good week"...they want to get to know about you and really absorb you into their community. The music is phenomenal and their service is always inspiring. Our pastor uses films/videos in his sermons and really touches upon relevant day-to-day issues that affect our lives - they can even be really funny at times. Our pastor has a great sense of humor and faith in God, which makes him so relatable and easy to talk to. There's also a great young adults group that has a mixture of students and working professionals that really gets you connected to others going through the same questions/struggles you are going to. This is a really great place for people with all different spiritual levels and walks in life, whether you've been a Christian your whole life or if you are wondering who God is, you will find acceptance, love, and support here.

I mean, there's diverse, and then there's a small church that represents about 20 different countries diverse, (20 might be a little bit of an exaggeration but the real number is not far off). The second thing I noticed was that the music was phenomenal. Some of the singers are fantastic and some of the musicians are top notch, especially the pianist, who went to Berklee College of Music. The pastor is spectacular as well. He's always willing to talk and will probably take you out to lunch. During the after church lunch/refreshment thing, he makes an effort to reach out to everyone in the congregation. His messages get to the heart of the gospel and he knows what separates the gospel from religion. He'll motivate you to grow closer to Jesus without sugar coating the Bible like those that preach the prosperity gospel. Not only is the congregation diverse, but it's super welcoming. Almost overwhelmingly welcoming. My first experience here was awesome. I slipped into the church and sat at the back and went unnoticed, (or so I thought). Then I went to the after church lunch thing and sat down. While eating my food, I was greeted by about 4 different people. Each one was super excited to see me and were truly interested in what I had to say. The pastor came and invited to be a part of different groups at the church. If you are looking for a place where you can sit at the back of the church without being noticed/greeted then this is not the place for you. However, if you are looking for a Christian community to be a part of that truly needs you and wants you no matter your background, then this is the place for you.

Scripture is cherry picked from the Bible, handed out on a piece of paper and often interpreted out of context in favor of radical social issues, such as Black Lives Matter or LGBT advocacy. In this church, racial diversity is held in higher regard over spiritual salvation; race over soul. In addition, sermons are often about using Jesus to get what you want in life rather than humbling yourself to Jesus for divine direction. The church dropped it's original name, Greater Boston Vineyard Church and affiliation with Vineyard USA for its new name, Reservoir Church, for LGBT, woke advocacy, woman in leadership and not requiring pastors to have a seminary degree.

How do all these places of worship go without being reviewed?…read more Christ Church was the second stop on my religious [pub] crawl; I've found that I have an affinity for most things New Englandy - New Englanderish? New English? This region has seen the entire history of 'post-European folks wanting freedom' America. Which is different from Stolen Land America and Stolen People America, but I digress. Something influential can be said of that. So, I set an appointment with the Assistant Rector, Reverend Jonathan Eden. How fitting is that last name, by the way? I joined the mailing list before the meeting so I could peruse some literature. They included a brief history of the church, its ties to England and its influence on the American government. Rev. Eden took me through the history of the church as well - he talked about King Henry VIII, the implementation of the Round Table as a religious approach, and the difference between southern and northern churches' stances on the Peculiar Institution. If given the chance, wouldn't you want to have your slaves and go to church too? Damn, I digress again. Anyway, the Black American Christian experience is relatively new when you consider the entire scope of Christianity. It's refreshing to hear about traditions and the use of Latin for Christmas carols. There is so much to be learned - so much in the borrowing and drawing of other, older institutions. So even if you don't put much stock in religion, I would encourage you to pull a Prometheus - yank it down from the heavens and make it your own. In my opinion, religion isn't the Divine's biography. It's ours.

I arrived between Lenten services but found the beautiful and historically significant church to be open - a lovely sacred space for peaceful contemplation. One of the clergy kindly lent me his charger to recharge my cell phone, which had run down navigating around Boston. As I stood in the foyer, I watched kids and adults dressed in costumes happily bustling about, preparing to perform the Passion play. Friendly parishioners young and old steadily streamed in and greeted each other (and me) warmly. It was obvious that Christ Church was an active and loving faith community.
