Originally founded in 1792 as Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, it experienced a name change as English became the "official" language when Louisiana joined the union in 1812. This current structure is the Parish's third and construction began in 1853. The marker out front gives more history. "Build in 1853 to 1856 on the site of two earlier churches. The first erected about 1790 under Spanish rule was called 'Our Lady of Sorrows.' The first marriage recorded was that of Don Antionio Gras, an early Spanish resident who donated the land. This Gothic Revival church with is 1891 steeple was extensively remodeled in 1921-1924 and again in 1966. There are meters for street parking but they are apparently not enforced on weekends. The liturgy and music were glorious for that Marian feast day! I enjoyed their Mass setting the organist and choir used as well, and their rendition of Hail Holy Queen Enthroned Above was awesome! I'm glad I went to this Mass! We need more choirs and organ like this!

There is plenty of parking and the church features an auditorium style layout, with seats facing the altar from the front and both sides. The pastors here have been amusing each time and the aisles have cushy seats, making every mass experience comfortable. They have ushers here, complete with solid crowd management skills and are very polite to boot. Of the many churches down here in the Baton Rouge area, this one is surely one of the better ones.

This is conveniently located down the street from where I live. In fact, there are several Catholic…read morechurches that are within a 5-10 minute drive from home. My parents love visiting this church, when they are in town, too, because it is a quick drive for them. The church I went to growing up (and still visit, when I am home) was not as close as this. Also, this church building is a lot bigger and more spacious than the one I grew up in. Every service, I've ever been to seems like it is busting out of the seams because I've seen many people standing. There is also a school attached to the church, which was a lot like when I was growing up. There are some priests that are more energetic than others in keeping congregation engaged, so that is great! Parking can be a bit challenging if you arrive late, but still do-able. A huge positive is that it is close to several main roads in town, too, so it's not deep in the neighborhood and hard to get to.

The whole layout of the church is extraordinary and for the stage to be in the center of the church makes the whole experience come together with such a home feeling vibe to it! The restrooms are CLEAN and very spacious!! Although the cry room could be remodeled to fit more whiny, loud, and obnoxious little kids but besides that this place is HELLA beautiful inside and out, go ahead and check it out for yourself!! Xo

I don't think I will ever "belong" to another church family to the same degree that I found at St. Pius X. From the Baptism of my children, to their Confirmation, and through the marriages of two of them, as well as the funeral for my wife, most of the important religious points in our lives were at St. Pius X. Add to that the many different positions we served in throughout our lives at St. Pius X, from lector, to Eucharistic Ministers, among others, all served to build on our Catholic foundation in our lives. I pass by the church almost daily as we built our home, which I still occupy in the subdivision adjoining the church specifically because they were building a new Catholic Church along with a Catholic School at St. Pius X . Lets just say we tried to tie our family to St. Pius X for our Catholic faith. I will always miss attending services at St. Pius X.
