Immediately, people were so friendly and kind! We were worried it would be uncomfortable and awkward because of our previous church experiences, but they made us feel so welcome :) It's a smaller church so it's more homely and friendly and family-oriented, although there are a lot of students who go here being that the University of Illinois is right in town! The church itself is beautiful, the architecture allows for natural lighting to pour in and it adds to the beauty of the service. Pastor Tim was really friendly and great, as well! Our FAVORITE PART of the visit was the fact that we were kindly invited to eat with a group of 10 church members at Jim and Dianne's house--they had a little potluck with delicious lasagna and other food, and they were really friendly and we had great fellowship talking with them about life and God. We were so blessed by their love and kindness. It was pretty unreal. Who invites strangers into their homes to eat?! They do!! So if you're looking for a new church to visit or are considering a new church home, please check out HPCRC! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT! A church should feel loving and a place where you can share your concerns and questions, and this place is it. We felt at home right away and we hope to visit again whenever we pass through!

The volunteer, in a room gathering their supplies to start working, noticed a pastor (of the opposite sex/gender) enter the doorway behind them. The pastor spoke to the volunteer in a way that made them uncomfortable. Despite numerous requests by the volunteer for the pastor to move from the doorway so they could leave, the pastor refused and allowed the volunteer to exit the space only after conceding to their (the pastor's) wishes. This matter was brought first to leadership and then to the District Council by the volunteer. Rather than addressing these allegations, the Deacon Council chose to ban this volunteer from the church forever without ever speaking with them. They only listened to the pastor's side of the story. All the attendees here are UIUC students. We had lunch days and movie nights. We all watched Passion of the Christ together. Plus, the church also offered study space in the basement. I built great friendships here and UBC will always be my favorite church.
