I purchased 1.5 yards of dyed black mulch (clearly listed on my receipt), but when I went to spread it, I discovered it was actually dyed walnut, not black. The mistake only became obvious when tying into my existing mulch. When I called, the associate initially told me nothing could be done. After being transferred and spending over 30 minutes on the phone, I finally reached a manager who quickly admitted the error and agreed to a refund. While I appreciate the eventual resolution, the process was unnecessarily frustrating, and the incorrect product caused a lot of wasted time and hassle. With so many other composting/mulch suppliers around, I would be cautious about using this company. read more

I ordered a cubic yard of the top soil plus. See the image below. I spread it on my lawn where I had placed grass seed, and in my flower beds. it had a substantial amount of mulchand small sticks and very hard balls of clay. It rained the next day and the soil turned into a very hard crust (see photo below). I called the company and they told me it was "soil crusting" that occurs after a rainstorm. They advised and break it up and smooth it out - I did . It rained again, and the areas once again turned into a very hard crust. What a waste of money. I would have been better off buying bags of top soil from Home Depot which are always rick, dark, screened and never undergo "soil crusting". So much for trying to save my back by buying from St. Louis Composting and having them deliver. Never again. read more

The prices are good if you're buying in bulk. Some of their mulch is obviously dyed (even the "natural" ) which then fades to grey in about a month or two, making it not worth the money. So, you'll need to spend a bit more for the top tier options. The real rub is delivery. Store policy or so I was told, is to deliver that day's loads furthest away first and closeted to the store last. Which means, when I place my order a month or two in advance, and then somebody places their the day before, they may get their delivery before I do. So when I take a day off off work, to distribute 15 years of mulch myself, and request early AM deliver, my mulch doesn't show up until 2PM. That's NOT customer centric. That's poor scheduling. read more

They have a nice webpage and cool certifications but that's where it ends. I bought several pick up loads of Black Gold last fall to repair construction damage in my yard. I prepared the areas that needed repair, put down the Black Gold then seeded and used started fertilizer. about 10 days into the project I started noticing some weeds with the new grass. after about 3 weeks the weeds we're obvious everywhere I repaired the yard. Depending on who I ask the weeds are either Dallas grass or Orchard grass, both having no specific herbicide to control them. I emailed St. Louis Compost 3 times as this unfolded and they ghosted me every time, nothing but crickets. The weeds easily survived winter and as soon as the temperature got above 50 degrees they greened up like I painted them. My choice now is to dig them out, and there are a bunch of the, or kill the entire yard and start over. Either way the compost has cost me a small fortune in time and money. Just remember this when you see their cool webpage. read more

Their raised bed mix is awful. It remains dry . Nothing grew well in it. Some things never germinated. I called and was told that you have to keep it watered. If I would have known we have to water a garden every single solitary day or more than once a day ​ would not have purchased it. It would have been nice if we were told that. read more

The mulch is fine and the price is good, but they don't have any respect for other people's time! We called on Friday for Saturday delivery. No problem they say. Saturday comes and goes, but NO mulch is delivered. Reschedule for Monday delivery. Called Monday morning for approximate delivery time. Advised delivery between 8:30 and 10:00 a.m. At 11:00 they proposed sending out mulch with next driver that comes in. Finally, a little after noon the mulch is delivered. There was no offer to pay the cost of my standby labor on Saturday or Monday. There was no expression of concern that a customer's weekend plans to spread mulch on dry days were completely derailed by their non-delivery. Buyer beware - Don't schedule your labor until these guys actually deliver. Their delivery promises aren't worth the breath used to make them! read more

Everything was easy and smooth from ordering online and receiving raised bed mix on time. Except the raised bed mix was mostly unevenly mixed sand and clay. The soil is very heavy and water doesn't drain well. Next year I have to really mend the soil so I can grow some veggies and I am not getting raised bed mix from St Louis composting again for sure. read more

Simple update - I am a fan of their "Garden Mix" which is a mixture of top soil, mulch and just a small amount of sand. Perfect for planter boxes. I ordered 13 cubic yards of Premium Gold, which is supposed to meet some standard for organic gardening. I am using this both for raised beds, regular vegetable beds, and also new landscape beds for perennials (mostly native plants). Ordering and delivery were fine. My only complaint was that there were assorted pieces of hard plastic, shredded plastic bags, and a bit of styrofoam interspersed in the dirt. The company was responsive to me raising concern about the sources of their material and came out to take a look. Perhaps this will impact to some extent on the quality of their compost in the future. read more

So, the last time I was here, either they were having an off day, or they've changed their practices due to my review. I'd like to think the latter! We purchased both compost and forest fines mulch from St. Louis Composting, and they are both fantastic products. It is INSANE how big and productive our plants were this year with soil enriched by compost. It doesn't even compare to last year. We will definitely be doing this every year going forward. We received fantastic and thorough service from Tom when we had a question about weed seeds in compost (the heat destroys them so it should not be a concern.) Now I see others here complaining about weeds and we did have a similar experience (it seemed like weeds we have never previously had, like sedge and ragweed, were popping up only in the places we put the compost). Still, there's no way to prove that that's the case. And because we are not prior consumers of compost, I would not know what is considered normal. Anyway, we've both picked up ourselves and had deliveries dropped at our property. Even though Fenton offers free mulch to residents, we buy from STL Compost because it's nicer and you can't beat having it brought right to your home. Overall, really impressed and will be a longtime customer. read more

THE BEST place for mulch, dirt, rock, they have it all, and so affordable it's crazy. A pick-up truck of mulch (Excellent quality) is about $35!!! I put my veggie garden "to rest" this year and wanted to cover it with compost. I tilled the area and applied the compost. When I came back from vacation, I found a carpet of Sedge! 11years and never had Sedge in the garden. Now, I will have to spend a fortune getting rid of it. One of the toughest weeds to eradicate!! I ordered the garden mix. It is listed as 50/50 river bottom and compost. To be honest it is a lot more chunky and twiggy than I would have expected and if you are making a new garden using it, it does not hold moisture very well at all. I don't think it has as much compost in it as is advertized. It drains WAY too quickly to be 50% compost. i also have bits of plastic yard waste in it. (several identifiable pieces were plastic bits of the tags that come in a potted plant when you purchase it.) I only give it three stars because it is a good price for base soil...but the 50/50 i will have to amend in order to make it usable. I wonder if the other versions are any better. read more

I bought what was called a "Raised Bed Mix". Nothing but clay, sand and last years leaf compost ground/blended together. I have Yellow nutsedge coming up everywhere, my greenbean plants and my tomato plants in this raised bed are dropping leaves and turning yellow and rapidly dying... tomatoes and beans planted in another existing bed on the same day are doing fine, so that tells me it has to be the soil. As far as I'm concerned, their product is junk. read more

I too have a terrible sedge problem that started in my brand new raised veggie garden beds where I used their garden mix, as well as all of my flower beds I used it in, and it is spreading to my yard. It's not worth the hassle. Go somewhere you will get a sterilized product. read more
