As a recent newbie to Seattle and Queen Anne, I was looking for a preschool that was affordable and…read morepart time, and having to do a job seemed like a small price to pay for what we were getting. I am a working parent and I understand the hesitation for most, but what I gained from the coop makes the experience well worth it. What these yelp reviews don't tell you about the coop is that you become part of their community. As a relocated family, we made friends and a network of support by just being part of this program. The coop took care of the "friend making" process for both our kids AND for us parents. I also found myself surrounded by supportive moms and dads who care about my kids as much as I do. By working in the classroom you learn to love each of these kids as your own. The kids in turn are comfortable with all the parents. In the classroom, there is a teacher for your child AND a teacher for you. It is amazing how much you grow and learn as a mom/dad when you have someone you can talk to about your child. Also having the other parents with children of the same age that you can swap ideas and share heartaches with is helpful. I know people are turned off by the whole "all school job". I work too, I understand the effort it takes. What I didn't expect was the positive impact of the job on my children. We forget that our kids are aware of our behavior. My kids saw mom working for the school and helping to make it better and that actually made a difference for them. They see the importance of "building your community" and "everybody chipping in" and they learned that from the coop. Our previous childcare/preschool experience was the all day drop off scenario. So, I have experienced both options. The no work all day solution is great, but I wouldn't do it again. I feel that I am closer and more involved with my child from having to be at the school. For me, it is worth it! I went into this school thinking affordable and easy with a pesky job. Instead, what I have gained, and what my children have gained, is seriously priceless!

I have two children who have been enrolled in Queen Anne Co-op for a total of five years. By…read morenature, a cooperative preschool is one where the parents/caregivers are involved by being in the classroom at times and holding a school "job". Your "job" can vary from small jobs to holding a "board position" like treasurer or secretary. I did the job of board childcare as mentioned by another reviewer for two years. It consisted of being in the classroom (with my child) one (at most) Friday a month for one hour and 45 minutes to help watch the kids of the board members while their parents had a meeting. If I had a conflict, I could send my babysitter (who I was already paying to watch my child) and they would basically have a play date with the other kids and parents. I've found it to be a pretty flexible, forgiving place where everyone chips in to make things run smoothly. I have always felt that the time I've invested in the co-op has been more than worth the benefits my children and I have received. Getting to know all of the parents through being together in the classroom has been invaluable. You almost immediately have a community of parents who know your child and who your child feels comfortable around. This is a group of people who help and support each other in and out of the classroom. In addition, the teachers are very experienced and the classroom is a large, bright space. Basically, I think it is an amazing place for a child to start their educational experience and for a family to be involved in a great community.

We started the quest for a preschool when my twin sons were 4. My three non-negotiables I was…read morelooking for were: 1. Play-based. I wanted my sons to learn how to play well with others within a loose structure. 2. Community-driven. I wanted to experience a group of "real" parents, who can appreciate (and at times commiserate) all the highs and lows of parenting. 3. Affordable. As a single-income family at the time, we needed something that we could both afford and met our standards. (My husband and I are both educators.) Kirkland Co-Op Preschool both met and exceeded our expectations. But the thing that has probably surprised us the most is the families and friends we've met along the way. My husband and I have expanded our "tribe" to include many of the families we've met at KCP, I'm so glad we made the choice to join. Our sons have been nurtured by not only the teachers at KCP, but also by the parents. The parent involvement piece is a big commitment, but our kids have benefited immensely from it. And I have been able to witness their growth in the classroom the whole time. It's been a really precious experience. Our twins are going to kindergarten this fall, but our youngest is going into Group II this year. If you're looking for a place for your family to find true community this is the place for you! I highly recommend it.

My husband went on countless tours and after attending an Open House at St. Thomas School he knew in his heart that he had found the right place for our children. Two academic years later there are a great number of reasons why we continue to feel St. Thomas School is the best place for our sons. Firstly, I believe that the STS guiding principals continue to have a great impact on our sons. The school's dedication to the development of the "whole child" has help shape their understanding of ethics and morality. I have found that there is a philosophical and moral code that runs deep through the students, faculty, and administration. I also firmly believe the STS community demonstrates that above all else it is important to be a good person. Secondly, the faculty and staff at St. Thomas School embrace the differences in students and are dedicated to understanding how each child learns. Our younger son currently attends Kindergarten in the Early Learning Center and we appreciate that the teachers support learning through exploration. Through our two years in the ELC we have seen found-object galleries, alphabet and reading/phonics artwork, and cooking projects; since our son has a tendency to retain knowledge through hands-on experiences, we feel the schools current ELC curriculum supports our son's learning-style through many tactile-based opportunities. Lastly, I deeply appreciate the value St. Thomas School places in leadership, stewardship, and community and demonstrates true dedication by holding Chapel every morning. Chapel offers our sons the unique opportunities to learn the value of teamwork, open discussions, group consensus, healthy opposition, and most importantly, leadership in service of others. I wholeheartedly believe that the experience of Chapel has made a lasting and eternally positive impression on our children. We believe this modality of fellowship is a wonderful way for young children to experience spirituality-based gatherings, public speaking, and companionship.
