I reached out to Heal the Bay, who was happy to assist us - we ended up opting for their Suits on the Sand program (sponsorship required), wherein they hosted us for two hours: after a fun icebreaker, we were given an informative talk about the environment and how our trash ends up on the country's beaches (even when not left by beachgoers), after which we were divided into groups and sent on our merry way. The cleanup ended with us bringing back our respective hauls, having them weighed, and the winning team collecting an award (since our group is naturally very competitive, this was right in everyone's wheelhouse). Then it was time for a little trash talk before we wrapped up. :) Antonio was awesome in the runup to our event, and extremely patient with me as I navigated my company's systems to make this possible, and the ladies who actually hosted the cleanup were friendly, engaging, and extremely knowledgeable. Our team LOVED the time on the beach, and that it was active - and actively giving back. Rave reviews from all. If anyone reading this is looking for a unique teambuilding service project for their organization, I highly recommend reaching out to Heal the Bay - and if you're interested in an accompanying "after-party" picnic, please see my other reviews!

They do good work! Volunteer if you can. Bring your own gardening gloves, bag and water container.... (and don't forget to bring your consent form they usually send it via email a few days before) spend as long as you like and tally the trash you pick up. Then turn in the tally sheet and your bag of trash at check in. They go thru the trash to see what can be recycled. I met some real cool people who care about doing something good for the enviro and networked for nursing school!

We feel so grateful to be part of the Palisades Preschool community. Our daughter started in the…read moretoddler program at 18 months and is now in the youngest preschool classroom. The experience has been exceptional every step of the way. The toddler program alone is worth mentioning--many parents call it "magical," and that's exactly how it feels. Each week, the teachers and atelieristas create a warm, beautiful environment with soft lighting and thoughtfully designed exploration areas. The children attend with their parents or caregivers, play together, and share a snack where they sit at tables and serve themselves. It's a gentle, joyful introduction to school. We loved that the teacher from the youngest preschool classroom leads the program, which makes the transition to drop-off the next year feel more familiar. As our daughter moved into the preschool this year, we were struck by the level of intention and care. The teachers are dedicated and knowledgeable. They meet every afternoon to reflect on the day and thoughtfully plan for what the children need next. They collaborate with atelieristas each week to bring in creative, meaningful materials--clay, natural elements, artist-grade paints, wire, light and shadow, and storytelling--so the children can learn to explore and express themselves through different media. The campus itself is also special--lush outdoor spaces with gardens, trees, and imaginative elements created by the children, making it feel like a little world of its own. It's fun to see the children watering the plants, playing in the river rock bed with the water pump, and watching the butterfly cocoons that form. We've also seen a meaningful transformation in our daughter. She used to be cautious and slow to warm in new situations, but during her time here, she has blossomed. Her confidence in exploring materials and engaging with her peers has grown significantly. She now dives into art (happily getting messy!) and interacts with her friends with ease, joy, and connection. One of the most striking moments for us was hosting our daughter's class for her birthday. Watching the children interact outside of school, we were amazed by how calm, kind, and collaborative they were. They invited each other to play, took turns easily, shared materials, and navigated social situations with awareness and respect. The parents were able to step back and hang out, which felt so different from other gatherings outside of the preschool that we've attended. It was clear that the children's social-emotional skills are being thoughtfully cultivated at school every day. And, while we are still far from the kindergarten process, we've connected with families of Palisades alumni whose children have gone on to some of the most well-regarded schools in Los Angeles, including Brentwood School, The Village School, and Crossroads, along with many other fantastic private and public schools. It's reassuring to see how strong the foundation is for the years to come. That's not surprising given that it feels like everything the school does is grounded in what's best for the child. Even the decision to offer only morning programs reflects a deep respect for young children's need for rest and the teachers' need for thoughtful preparation. Palisades Preschool is a special place, and we feel incredibly lucky that our daughter and our family are part of this community.

A Hidden Jewel in Santa Monica!…read more We had a great visit today to the Santa Monica Elks Lodge #906, located on Pico and 10th Street in Santa Monica. As longtime Elks, we always enjoy visiting different Lodges, and this one truly stood out. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by Jenny, who graciously gave us a tour and shared the history and vibrance of this special place. It's a place that honors tradition while embracing a bright future. Lodge #906 is more than just a meeting space -- it's a sanctuary in the midst of a busy city. It was recently renovated, and the fresh new flooring, new paint, updated carpets, and tasteful décor make the entire space feel both welcoming and refreshed. We loved the nice comfortable Bar, too. The Lodge is beautifully maintained and serves as a vital community hub. In addition to hosting Elks meetings, the space is available for rent by other local organizations and community groups -- including the Kiwanis and Lion's Clubs -- making it an ideal cost-effective venue for gatherings, fundraisers, and celebrations. It's a resource that should remain top of mind for anyone looking for a well-appointed space to rent for parties, meetings and more. There's plenty of parking, which makes hosting events easy and convenient. And one of the standout features is the nice-sized stage, perfect for live entertainment, speakers, ceremonies, and performances. Whether it's a band night, awards event, or community presentation, the Lodge provides a welcoming and functional space for it all. Every Thursday, members gather for dinner at a very reasonable cost, and the calendar is filled with engaging events -- from live band performances to social mixers and more. There's a cozy card room where members enjoy games in good company, and a rising favorite among members is Mahjong -- easy to learn, fun to play, and a great way to connect. Throughout the building, you'll find thoughtful displays that honor the history and mission of the Elks. These serve as powerful reminders of the organization's deep roots and lasting impact. The members take great pride not just in their camaraderie, but also in their dedication to service -- regularly supporting and working with other non-profits to lift up the community. At the heart of it all is the Elks' enduring motto: Elks Care. Elks Share. With over 2,200 Lodges across the country and beyond, this isn't just a saying -- it's a way of life. The Elks are a living example of how kindness, generosity, and community spirit can thrive in today's world. They're more than a fraternal organization -- they're a national treasure, providing support, connection, and service in every corner of the country. If you've never visited an Elks Lodge, you're missing out on a slice of Americana where everyone is welcome, and the bonds of community still mean everything. Interested in joining? It's fun for all ages and a great place to meet your friends and family, too! Membership is not only meaningful -- it's incredibly cost-effective. The annual dues are surprisingly affordable, especially when you consider all the fellowship, fun, and opportunities to give back. Be sure to check it out!
