The oldest surviving church in Rutherford County and a superb illustration of Greek Revival ecclesiastical architecture in Western North Carolina is St. John's Episcopal Church in Rutherfordton. Its design includes a square louvered belfry with a pyramidal roof, big symmetrically framed windows with corner blocks, and a low-pitched pediment gable front. The pews and most of the original craftsmanship are still present.
The church was sold to the Lutheran Synod in 1936 and renamed Trinity Lutheran Church after it had previously served an Episcopal congregation. It remained operational until 2011, when a fire severely damaged it and forced its closure. Since restored, the structure now houses the Rutherford County Historical Society's headquarters and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
My eye was drawn to the historical marker and the brilliant white paint of this beautiful structure. There is street parking and a lot across the street.
