I have been visiting on and off since 2021, after moving to Sonoma in 2020, and each visit has felt nothing short of divine. I deeply look forward to joining in the worship--the music is always so uplifting, warm, and healing. The Bible-based teachings are consistently powerful, delivered with clarity and excellence, and I leave each time with a renewed sense of knowledge and wisdom. My soul is genuinely stirred by the spirit of worship at Calvary Chapel Petaluma. My home church is Lakeside Temple of Practical Christianity in Oakland, California, which is also a non-denominational ministry. I serve there as a licensed teacher and counselor. For the past two years, I have faithfully taught every Sunday in the absence of a Senior Minister. We were recently blessed in January 2026 with a new minister, and I am now looking forward to visiting Calvary Chapel Petaluma more regularly. I love that they really notice newcomers, and extend themselves to make you feel at home and welcome. They have a great youth and child set of programs, and even have a "Out of College, No Children yet" group for young adults in their 20s and 30s. Amazing worship team, very talented musicians, passionate and well spoken pastors. There are some super cool missions and events that they take part in, including service days in Petaluma, blood drives, and community support events, as well as regularly scheduled camping trips, beach trips, and young adult events.

I am no architecture buff, but I often marvel at how different buildings look from region to region. With it's converted barn looking exterior, St James completely embodies that of a west coast church. It screams California with a capital C. Situated along Sonoma Parkway, St James is located a on large lot that encompasses several buildings. Lacking any prominent signage, this place is easy to miss for folks not paying attention. The parking lot is spacious as is the actual church itself. The inside of the church is nice, though the ventilation is a challenge during the summer. There are ceiling fans available, but they don't do much for the majority of the people not directly underneath it. Sound system is pretty solid, I think their choir could really take advantage of the acoustics. This place could serve really as a solid event space as well. Pews are wooden and very sturdy. They aren't the most comfortable on the knees, but things could certainly be worse. The lobby'ish area is where most of the folks with loud kids will go, though they are as audible as if they were sitting in the main area. I appreciate the fact there are vendors outside of the place, selling flowers. Moreover, I love the California vibe where formalities go out the window and folks are rocking shorts and casual wear all throughout the mass.
