Rockville Christian is a great church!…read more Sunday Worship Service is held at 11:00 AM. The church is small, a congregation that is diverse in every dimension, and everyone receives a genuinely warm welcome there. I first visited Rockville Christian Church because although the church I was attending in DC was very nice, I was feeling led to go somewhere closer to home, where I could be part of a church community. One of the pastors at my church in DC recommended Rockville Christian Church, so I went. As soon as I walked into the church, I received a genuinely friendly welcome. I found my seat, and the service began. The music was good at the service. Kay Krekow, a gifted musician, leads the music ministry. The church choir is small, but sings some ambitious selections. I was happy that at Rockville Christian, the congregation sings enthusiastically. (I've sometimes been dismayed to be in churches where you couldn't tell whether the congregation was singing or not, but people really sing here.) The young pastor of the church, Rev. Dr. David Chisham, does a great job of presenting the message. He varies his style of presentation, and this keeps things interesting. Rockville Christian Church is part of The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) denomination. The name of the denomination is intentionally simple, as are its Mission, Vision and Confession. It is refreshing to be part of a church that doesn't add any extraneous requirements or conditions to what is specified in the Bible. Finding Rockville Christian Church can be challenging, but it is worth the effort! Once you are on Adclare Road, drive a few blocks through the nice residential neighborhood until the road dead ends at the church.

Don't get me started, I'll dilute my coffee! I appreciate that our military, their families, veterans, and our leaders are always lifted in prayer. Suffice it to say, great place for unconditional love and acceptance. Everyone pitching in when someone is in need and celebrating the milestones of our lives. The community service and camp programs for the youth is so important for their development as Christians and global citizens. The kids programs make them feel special and surrounded by caring adults and teens. Thanks to Deidre who leads crafts for the kids twice a month in addition to a separate children's church. It is nice when the kids say, "what's happening at church today".

The messages often are more focused on life and less on what the Bible teaches us. This church does what they can to take the Bible and society and bend the Bible a little to make society feel more comfortable. I believe you have to be careful when compromising the Bible's message and using verses out of context. We are warned about this in the Bible. if the beach is the Bible, the tide is society, and the church is the person in the water then this church has been swept away from the Bible as their context towards righteousness and has lost their way a little. Churches need to make the Bible their guide not what feels right. This church wants everyone to just be happy, and they do a disservice by compromising the message of the Bible to try to make it what people want to hear. They use a lot of emotion, but you should never have to compromise the Bible to meet societies desires. I think they are great people, but they have let politics come into their message too much, and I wonder if their focus is more towards politics than equipping members to have a deeper relationship with Christ through his message. I wish them the best, and I hope the new pastor the best. There are some other great alternatives around that are more upbeat and modern, but they maintain their commitment to the Bible a little better.

Before being a member of GCCC, I was church hopping for 2 years. I feel like there aren't enough…read moreinfos or perspectives about churches nowdays, hence, here's my quick thoughts about this church. GCCC's denomination is under Christian & Missionary Alliance that typically specialize about missionary efforts. About 200sh people show up every week - mostly young Koreans and Chinese working professionals (20s to 30s) + some families (15-30 kids) + college students. Coming from a legalistic church, I've been blessed with the pastors here & their grace based sermons. Pros: (1) The community aspect's great. The members are quite active & are always down to hang out. A lot of the members tend to move here from other cities. Due to this, they don't have much safety blanket to fall on, hence, they tend to give more efforts to get to know people / make friends in their new environment. (2) Small groups are a great way to find accountability as well as getting plugged into the church. (3) Currently, GCCC has both local mission partners & international mission trips opportunities (Spain, Cambodia) with ample serving opportunities at the church as well. (4) Metro accessible; This church's located inside Hilton Doubletree hotel & service starts at 11:30 a.m. on Sundays. Cons: (1) With this church being close to DC & filled with the younger professionals, some of the people do tend to come and go (temporary positions, internships, etc). At the same time, we do have many people that've stayed here for a long time. (2) Some of the more popular small group locations can be more packed than others. Tips: If you're a newcomer, just tell that to the ushers (we wear tags) in the welcoming table. I know it can be awkward / intimidating being the new guy in a church - you're not sure who to talk to, especially since many people break in convo groups. You can always just approach the ushers after service; We can answer any questions you might have, help you get plugged in, introduce you to our pastors or just chat & get to know you.

The pastors really live out the gospel. If you hear how much they have sacrificed for God and where…read morethey have served, you can see they really live out a life of service and love sharing the gospel to people who have been neglected. They use to live in the ghettos of Boston where there were as many funerals there as there are wedding in DC. They opened their house to the neighborhood children who often didn't have enough to eat or needed a safe place. On a side note regarding the post on Chinese New years, all the Christians I know in China and Taiwan celebrate Chinese New Years because it's a time to connect with family and friends and to share and tell them how much you love them. It's not easy being Christian in China and some of them have given up professions, suffered persecution, and are barely scrapping by, but they celebrate Chinese New Years....maybe differently from others....like with prayer and church services along with visiting family, feeding and helping the poor and witnessing to them. Chinese Christians definitely celebrate and share Christ's love during the two week national celebration!

As a campus minister, it challenged me to think about how when we are in positions of leadership we can think we are "above" normal tasks such as ushering and welcoming people at the door. However, are there ways I can live out my faith and service in doing humble tasks as the pastor of this church modeled out? Thanks District church, for helping my faith to grow from that visit!
