The staff does a remarkable job managing the church, keeping it looking nice and clean. One area of special note is the Upward athletic programs, they offer basketball and soccer for boys and girls K through 3rd grade. These short 8 week seasons give children a quality opportunity to learn about working as a team, being led by a coach, playing well with others and competing. Lutefisk wasn't the best many hard yellow chunks. Lefse was very good. For dessert pie is customary at a Lutefisk dinner they had cookies which was a little disappointing but they were good. It was confusing to serve yourself on potatoes & fixing but the fish was family style & no one came to clear the plates.

I awakened this Sunday morning thinking about St. Matthews Church. It's not an uncommon memory for…read moreme....and ten years is a long time to have been away from what was, on most occasions, a comfort zone. On sunny days, I would walk to church. It lifted my spirit. What a warm place for me to be. St. Matt's is a beautiful church. I was drawn to the music, for sure. I always sat close to the musicians. And there, also, especially when the sun was shining, a white cross appeared in one section of the stained glass that I was facing. I was touched. St. Matt's, however, was a place of contrasts/contradiction for me. Although there were many friendly parishioners, a woman's place in the service, in "leadership", was defined by men. Perhaps it was a generational thing and after all of these years, things have really changed. Healing services were appreciated when I was first introduced to them, but they soon became too influenced by the judgments of men. It seemed to me that women of advanced educational standing and experience were considered a threat, to males and females. Divorced women, although "welcomed into the fold" were slighted. An inscribed gift that I had given to the church library in thanks for kindnesses shown had disappeared completely and had "never been a part of the inventory." A place of contradiction, in my mind...One day I will return. I long to feel the presence, especially when that small white cross is shining in the stained glass.

They have a wonderful auditorium space and the buildings are home to a number of nonprofits, they host winter markets and craft fairs.
