For a few hours of wandering, I managed to keep myself entertained wandering around this gorgeous area's restaurants, shops and harbor chock full of sailboats and ferries. Give yourself permission to get lost and wander! It's worth it.

The large crab apple tree planted in the center of the large lawn was so abundant that there were tons of over ripened ones that had fallen all over and littered the lawn. This caused a bunch of bees buzzing around them on the lawn. There are also a lot of tourists walking the outer grounds of the castle, stopping to pose next to the cannons. The views of the ocean and blue skies are noteworthy. It was worth the long walk from the hotel.

Oslo City Hall wasn't open most of this week due to local elections but we finally got inside on…read moreour last day. City Hall was an imposing building of brick. The long driveway up included covered walkways with mounted wooden carvings depicting scenes from Nordic mythology. Each scene included a bilingual explanation which was helpful to learn the context. Well worth the time to see these. Inside only the first floor was opened for visitors on the day of our visit. It was cavernous with much higher ceilings than I expected. The wall murals were spectacular. A small display on one of the offshoot halls contained some details about the annual Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. Downstairs were the WCs and cafeteria. At least free to entry versus some other Scandinavian city halls!

This is one of the most bewildering "tourist" sites I have ever come across. Really it should…read moreprobably be ignored, but I feel it's my Yelp duty to warn fellow travellers who may also be tempted by all the other 5 star reviews. It's a set of very uninteresting stairs, in a "edgy" looking area, with a rubbish view at the top and the highlight of a couple of very low key wolf type statues at the bottom. This is not something that in anyway should be called a tourist site and if it is classified as that then it should be about 400 on the list of landmarks worth seeing. There is literally loads of statues across Oslo that are way more interesting that the ones at the bottom of these crappy stairs. Scraping the bottoms of the barrel of tourist attractions, one to avoid for sure.

But if it's your first time in Oslo especially give yourself at least 2 hours to walk all the way in and about, around and out. This is a classic outdoor sculpture garden all done by one man-so not common. Massive grounds. Beautiful park walk and fountains and views. Iconic place and I highly suggest you go to his small museum first so you can get more history on Gustav Vigeland and the evolution of the his 200 pieces turning into the "Frognerpark."

This is a sculpture garden filled with over 200 sculptures (and over 600 individual figures)…read moredesigned by Gustav Vigeland from 1940 to 1949. It seems to be known as both Frognerparken (Frogner Park) and Vigeland Park. I doubt you have ever seen anything like this. I am including lots of photos because it's impossible to describe what this is like. The focus of the sculptures is the cycle of life and this is literally shown as babies turn into children, who then turn into adolescents, adults, and old people, and eventually die -- as the circle continues. You will notice that the statues are very realistic and are not romanticized in the least. They are regular human beings. You will also notice, of course, that they are all naked. The purpose of this is to emphasize their humanity without relying on class or wealth that becomes more obvious when people wear clothes. This might make some people uncomfortable, but it is done without any intention of being erotic. The inspiration for Vigeland's work comes from Rodin's nude sculptures. However, the realistic human statues remind me of Pompei -- real human people caught in a fragment of time. That said, is it worth your time while in Olso? Absolutely! This will overwhelm your senses and be etched in your memory -- in a good way.
