We absolutely love Stratford School in Altadena! My older son is in fifth grade and my younger son…read moreis in first, and both have truly thrived here. The small class sizes mean every child gets individual attention, and the curriculum is very advanced, engaging, and thoughtfully designed to challenge students while keeping learning fun. The teachers and administrators are exceptional, caring, very communicative, and deeply invested in every child's growth. But what really makes Stratford special is the community. The kids are kind, well-behaved, and genuinely happy. The families are wonderful, invested and share the same goal: creating a nurturing, protected environment where children can still be kids. Parents are on the same page about carefully monitoring what our children see and hear, helping them stay innocent and grounded for as long as possible. People often comment on how sweet and polite the Stratford kids are and it's true! This is especially the case for the kids in 5th grade. They are so kind, welcoming and supportive. The school reinforces the same values we prioritize at home: being good citizens, good friends, and good students. Our family's experience with Stratford has been truly life-changing. Before coming here, our older son went through a very difficult 3rd grade year at another school where he experienced bullying. What hurt us most was that the school failed to inform us despite multiple incidents. There was zero communication until something major happened. Our son suffered in silence for much of the year. When we finally discovered what had been happening, we immediately decided to immediately pull him out and make a change. Stratford was already at the top of my list. I had toured the school and met the principal two years earlier when we were exploring different options -- and, by some miracle, there was one spot open in third grade after another student moved over the holidays. Within a week, our son had taken the assessment and started at Stratford. The transformation was incredible. His anger and sadness melted away, and our sweet, happy boy returned. We will be forever grateful for this school. It's more than just an excellent academic environment, it's a refuge, a true community that supports the whole child and we'll never stop being thankful.

My son was currently enrolled at Willard Elementary School. I am writing this with all the pain in…read moremy heart that my son was a victim of some type of bullying/ racism behavior from his teacher. On April 23, 2026, as I dropped off my son at school, I waited for the bell to ring and waited for the kids to walk off. I encountered a situation with Ms. Bugarin that left me SHOOK! It was about 7:45 am when my son walked in the kindergarten gate and stood in line to wait for the rest of the kids. As my son was standing in line, I was outside the gate, less than 5 feet away from my child. Two boys started bumping my son, and my son stated, "Guys, please stop pushing me." Ms.Bugarin then turns and says, "Matthias, stop bumping into your friends." The first time around, I did not say a word because I understand we are all human, and she might not have seen the entire situation. The boys kept pushing my son, and my son again said: "Guys, please stop". Ms.Bugarin then says again, "Matthias, I already told you to stop bumping. Come over here because you're not listening". *****All this is happening in front of my eyes, I am standing less than 5 feet away from my child!***** as i see this play in front of me I advocate for my son and say " matthias speak up baby. let her know it was NOT you, that the boys kept pushing YOU." Instead of the teacher addressing the situation there and then, what she did was the following: she grabbed my child from the hand and walked away, not only from the situation, but she walked away from ME, the MOTHER of MY child. I advocated for him, I spoke up for him, and she IGNORED me, BLAMED my child, and SCOLDED my child for something he did NOT do. which now has me infuriated as to, if she has the COURAGE to act the way she did with my child when I am PRESENT what happens when I am NOT present. I called the school IMMEDIATELY to hold a meeting with the principal and the teacher because there is no excuse, no reason, or motive to IGNORE the mother of the child for ANY reason. Especially if I have every right to advocate for him! The meeting was held on 4/24/26 at 8 AM at Willard Elementary School, and I was told, and I quote the teacher, "I think the problem is Matthias' behavior and that is what we need to fix." I had zero accountability from the teacher and from the principal. The principal said, "I agree to disagree. Maybe the adrenaline and how fast things happened, you saw one thing, she saw another." So, I walked away being labeled a liar? All because I advocated for my child, so are they saying this behavior is ok? Are teachers allowed to IGNORE the mother of the babies? Not only are they not satisfied with picking on my child, but now they want to pick on me? Unacceptable. I then proceeded to contact the senior director of Pasadena, and in summary, the district, the principal, and the teacher all said I am a liar. Attached are the emails and letters I received from the district. As stated in the email, it says, "I will be reaching out to you and the others involved to complete the investigation within this time frame." I never received a call, no one reached out to me to ask what happened or how it happened. I then just received a letter stating "the evidence does not support that the teacher is bullying...The evidence SUPPORTS that the teacher was putting strategies in place to support the student the student and to make sure he was not being accused of negative behaviors unfairly. " So, the district supports the teacher ignoring the mother of a child? My son was STILL accused unfairly, and the district is stating, and I quote, "... the district is not required to take corrective action." The Pasadena School District has failed my son and me.

Yes, it is known for its academic rigor, and it absolutely lives up to that reputation. But what really sets High Point apart is the way its teachers meet every student exactly where they are. They scaffold thoughtfully, set the bar high, and, most impressively, get their students there. I've never seen anything quite like it. Even more important than academics, though, is the culture the school fosters. My children feel genuinely loved, heard, and respected every single day. There is a warmth and authenticity here that is rare, especially compared to the elitist entitlement that can be so prevalent in many independent schools in the area. My only regret? Not sending them to High Point sooner. Then again, if I hadn't experienced the alternatives, I wouldn't fully appreciate just how special this school truly is.

High Point offers a strong education combined with a nurturing environment, but best of all the kids are nice. When I spent time on campus, the junior high kids acted like jr. high kids vs. 13 year olds going on 20. On top of all this, High Point is a great value for the quality of education.

There's 3 K classes this year, her teacher Ms. Wei is wonderful, caring, detail oriented, she focuses on well being activities like helping the kids manage emotions in addition to learning Mandarin. With the 90:10 model they have Ms. Wei who teaches in Mandarin for the day and then for one hour they go to a separate English teacher. As they get older the English class time increases, as everyone tells me and I believe it, don't worry about their English falling behind, they catch up easily around 3rd grade. We are non-native speakers as I would say the majority of the class is too, it's quite diverse I must say, every type of Asian and different ethnicities, it's wonderful. Field does a great job celebrating all nationalities and every holiday with emphasis on the Chinese culture. There's seriously so many fun activities every week, the parents are so involved volunteering and wanting to make the school better. So even if you don't know any Mandarin, the kids pick it up so well and the teachers are so great in teaching it, my kid was singing and meditating in Mandarin by month two hah. The principal Ms. Tucker is great too, she' very into finding ways to improve the school and better the future for the program. It's just a wonderful school all around and an amazing community for the kids and parents!

We played until shortly after 3:00 PM. The courts are really nice. I prefer the permanent pickleball court on the north side. The permanent pickleball court on the south side has more shade because there are trees near it. However, I find the ground on that side with more leaves and dirt. Hence, the north courts are better IMHO... there is still some shade there later in the afternoon. Luckily, we found street parking that is free on Sundays. I think there is a parking lot on the school campus, but I just don't know where exactly. The courts are actually on the side of El Molino Ave. Entrance is north of the gymnasium that happens to be north of the courts. When you see the courts, just walk north of them. You'll see a gate that will be open. Walk through it, then you'll see the gymnasium on your right. After you pass by the gymnasium, you'll walk through another gate. Walk down the steps and turn right. You'll see the courts in front of you. Stay on your left as the entrance onto the courts is on the left. There is only one entrance and one exit. Entrance and exit is the same. Have fun playing pickleball and/or tennis!!! We did. We'll definitely be back for more pickleball play. It's a very good pickleball courts alternative besides Allendale Park and Farnsworth Park in Pasadena.
