St. Gereon belongs to one of the 12 renown Romanesque churches in Köln and is my personal favorite. Among that elite group, it is also one of the most unique, inspiring, and beautiful. Anyone interested in church architecture needs take the time to see this magnificent structure. Though the church we have today was finished in the 1200s, there has been a Christian house of worship on the site since the 600s. This kind of history beckons worshipers and culture enthusiasts alike.
Highlights of the basilica include the dome, which, at one time, was one of the largest domes in Christendom next only to Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. Visits should also take time to marvel at the amazing stained-glass windows through the interior. Whether your going for a Gottesdienst or simply to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the building itself, St. Gereon is a wonderful site to behold. read more
