We brought sandwiches, snacks and water which made for a little picnic. The garden is enormous and beautifully maintained. Wish we had gardens such as this in the USA. I think this may even be bigger than the Central Park in NYC - most certainly safer! We went on a Monday but it was still full of people. From what it seems, it's a favorite among locals and tourists alike. Locals wade into the water and there are even some spots where they surf! I believe there's even a lifeguard in one of the areas. They don't just let anyone surf though and there are some warning signs about its dangers. Hubby and I were able to find a bench in the shade where we just enjoyed the scenery for a while. It was perfect for our jet lag recovery The park is also within walking distance from many other landmarks in Munich, such as The Residence, the Odeonsplatz, Mariensplatz, The Munich Cathedral, among many others.

Locals told us that it was designed by an Englishman to look like an English Park. It was pretty, but it looks like home. It was great for people watching and did enjoy seeing more surfers , and lots of bikers, dogs and walkers. It was a beautiful & sunny 73° & the perfect place to get in well over 10,000 steps here.

Eisbach-Welle (ice river waves) had a lot of people queuing on this day and the water is cold and murky - nothing like surfing on Waikiki (I highly recommend this BTW). They looked like they were very disciplined, courteous of one another, and most of all - having a lot of fun. I don't have a thick wet suit and I don't think there is a surf board rental shop here in all of Germany!! So, I think these folks are local and they brought their own surf boards. If there was a rental shop close by, I'd probably give this a try but there are no lifeguards here. Perhaps, they all just look after each other?? FYI, if you haven't surfed, it's like sledding down a hill, it's fun surfing the wave, but to get back out to ride the wave, it's really tiring. But you don't experience that here because it's a standing wave. After a wipe out, the surfers basically went to the bank of the river and back into the queue on either side. After spending some time in Old Town, walk over here and check them out, it's an endless way to check out great form and to dream of being back in Hawaii...

Daily at 11:00 AM, noon and 5:00 PM from March through October the ornate clock treats us to a 12 to 15 minute show. 32 life-size animated figures move to music from 43 bells. The top tier shows a royal wedding & knight jousting from 1568. The bottom tier shows the traditional coopers' dance that celebrated the end of the plague. It ends with a golden rooster at the top flapping its wings & crowing three times.

The show lasts about fifteen minutes and starts daily at 11:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. from March to October. The clock has 43 bells and 32 life-size figures and was added during the completion of the Neues Rathaus or New Town Hall in 1908. We found a good spot to stand and wait on the opposite side of the plaza which was great because we were in the shade. If you ever visit Munich you definitely have to check this out. There are plenty of places to shop or dine nearby.

I don't often say this but this is pretty much a must-visit if you're going to Munich for the first…read moretime. It's in the Alstadt so the museum is not hard to get to. The museum shows the Bavarian royalty rather vividly. You will need at least 2 hours to see all the exhibits, if not 3-4 hours. This is assuming that you won't be listening to much of the audioguide entries. The audioguides are thorough and informative, but you will be spending a lot more time in the museum if you listen to many/all of them. The museum, as you can infer, is vast and chock full of stuff. While the rooms themselves are numerous, you still have exhibits with their collections of dining ware, furniture and furnishings. The tapestries are beautiful as are many of the rooms. The rooms seem endless at some parts. The good thing is that there are "off ramps" where you can shorten the visit and head towards the exit, but if you want the full experience, be prepared to spend a lot of time. The treasury part of the museum, which is separate but adjacent, takes less time (you could go through it in less than 30 minutes), has some nice exhibits. The highlight is probably the crown and swords. Staff at the entrance and around the museum are generally informative and not intrusive. The benefit of this museum, unlike many in the city, is that it's open on Mondays, so you can save this museum trip for that day.
