Although not a member of the St. Andrew's congregation because of my Jewish faith, I have visited…read moreboth the old and new St. Andrew Catholic Church in Newtown, Pa. on many occasions. It is part of the Philadelphia Diocese, and operates an school by the same name on Wrights Road. The old brownstone single tower neo-Gothic structure, completed in 1880, has a wonderful ambiance, but it held only 200 people and became too small for the growing population of central Bucks County. A new modern open church was completed in the 1990's, just up Swamp Road. Its airiness and vaulted ceilings contributes to a sense that prayers fly upward and are amplified by the multitude of sincere entreaties below. It is a very warm church. Sadly, it seems that the main reason for visits over the years has been to attend funerals and the Blue Mass for our police officers and first responders. Father (Monsignor) Picard is a strong and compassionate leader of this faith community. He connects well with all, and offers a sincere ear and deep reflective response to all who seek his advise and aid. I found myself there yesterday after a neighbor I have known for many years passed away suddenly. The pews were full with his mourning family, friends, co-workers and neighbors. Psalms were read. Songs were song, and eucharist was offered. Tears flowed. Embraces were extended and heart felt. The service ended and solemnly as it had begun, with Father Picard standing at the door offering one last, "Peace Be With You," to all who had come to celebrate and commiserate the life and death of a wonderful man too soon taken.

I have been a Roman Catholic for 62 years. Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church is, by far, the worst…read morechurch I have ever experienced. Father Matt Guckin should be removed from his post as Pastor of any Catholic church. During COVID I asked to receive communion while I was in Doylestown Hospital. Father Guckin came to see me. I was unable to receive the Eucharist because of COVID protocols. I told him about my medical problems at which point he began to tell me how hard his life was and all the problems he was dealing with. Recently I had an issue with a building I live in that I wished to talk to Father Guckin about, and he, once again, told me how busy he was, and he had no time for something so petty. That petty thing was not at all petty to me. It effected my faith so deeply that I have left the Roman Catholic Church for good. I have heard similar stories about OLMC and Father Guckin. One time I wrote an email to suggest that the altar servers not be allowed to wear dirty sneakers and flip flops on our Lord's altar. The next time I went to Mass Father Guckin told the entire congregation, while he was wearing sandals about my letter and how he and Father Flanagan got such a laugh out of it. I still have the emails from Father Flanagan who asked me if the altar servers' footwear was all I got from attending the church. I felt very betrayed although my name was not mentioned. Money seems to be a big part of the atmosphere of OLMC. There seem to be different cliques within this parish. Mainly Trump supporting, Pope Leo hating and cold people. I posted my first review of the church 5 years ago and it was positive. I've dealt with these people long enough to find out what this place is all about. I cannot recommend OLMC to any Catholic. Its Bucks County fieldstone facade is ageless, and for all the world to imagine that it sprung wholely formed directly from this good earth. Sadly, I was there for the first time attending to a funeral for a friend's mother-in-law, who was taken too soon after a battle with cancer. Yet, if there was ever a House of God able to hold and comfort the pain and grief of a large family, this ancient chapel was it. Although not Christian, I felt the holiness of the stones, stained glass and old wooden benches sitting beneath its high vaulted ceiling. Every word spoken in memoriam of her passing by her children and husband rang clearly off the well plastered walls. The pastor's homily of Proverbs:31 was true and to the point. As I sat concentrating on the message, I saw a bright white light glowing behind each of them, attesting to their complete sincerity, sense of loss and the devine presence. It was a Light comfortably embraced by the strong stone arms of this amazing soulful edifice.

The people are friendly, warm and welcoming. I continued to attend, went to a "Path to Membership" class and, well, became a member. The church has a very traditional look and feel. It is a very old church, however, it is a progressive church. I believe I found my spiritual community at Salem.
