Love the lake but didn't get to see the inside of the Pavillion. Great toddlers play area and there are tennis courts and bowling green. There are also tables on which one can Bbq. The colours of the flowers and kiddies play area are wonderful and this is a wonderful gift left by Sir Frederick Adair in 1909.

5 Stars - Worth your time if you enjoy nature and history…read more The beauty of the park...far-reaching. Put on your best walking or hiking shoes to get fully immersed, if you're able. The park boasts trails from moderate to challenging, beautiful visits, and a historical castle. To start, my family and I traversed the 2.2 mile Lakeside Walk trail from the Visitors Center to Glenveagh Castle to start. A shuttle can drive you there and back for a few Euros. On the way, the seemingly endless valley, lake, and mountain range, quickly eased my memory of the (tense) drive to the park on very narrow roads. The Castle itself costs money to walk through, but walking through the grounds of the Castle is free. The gardens are actively maintained and contain a beauty of their own. The history is fascinating and can be read at the park or beforehand online. After the gardens, we chose to continue along the trail by the lake (Glen/Bridle Path Walk) to view the approximately 120 foot tall Atelleen Burn waterfall on the opposite side, which we enjoyed. The shortest way back to the Visitors Center is same trail. A longer, higher, and more challenging trail (Viewpoint Trail) can also be taken. Walking back through the Castle grounds, we stopped in the restrooms and ordered a gelato and espresso from the truck. Nellie's Restaurant, located within the Visitors Center, offered some good food and beverages options when we returned, thankfully before the 5 pm close time. All told, we spent about 5 refreshing and energy-expending hours at the park, with much of the park left unexplored.

Watched over by lifeguards during the summer months with the very shallow water (even at high tide) and clean well kept shore line makes it perfect for families (and anyone else that enjoys a good beach). It is always a hive of activity with surf schools, anglers, sailors and swimmers all taking to the water. Plenty of sea life roam the waters to keep the amateur marine biologist interested. With all the holiday houses and caravan parks close by it is no surprise that this lovely beach is so popular. It is only going to get busier with the re-opening of the Shannon Hotel. So get there early when the sun comes out otherwise there will be no parking space left!

It's a beautiful place and designed for walks and picnics. It has toilets and you can potter around the lake area to the coffee bar, but you'll need a fair level of fitness to go to the top of the waterfall as it's quite steep. The water is so clean with a peaty hue given Ireland has wonderful peat bogs - an incredible eco system of its own. Now it ain't the falls of Angel, it ain't Niagara nor Dunn's River; this waterfall reaches 50ft high and is situated at Glencar Lough, and it inspired perhaps Ireland's greatest poet William Butler Yeats who put it much better than me in his poem 'The Stolen Child' 'Where the wandering water gushes From the hills above Glen-Car, In pools among the rushes That scarce could bathe a star' Glad we went, once. When it is sunny however this place gets very busy, especially by the lake where people don't just picnic - and indeed BBQ - but kayak, fish, walk, cycle, and bring their dogs for a swim. There are plenty of amenities on site or very nearby, such as plenty of parking, clean public bathrooms, a small cafe, and a large shop within easy walking distance. There is also a huge maze for you to try and find your way out of and that alone could take up a good hour. Entrance fee per car is £4.50 - a bargain for a full day's outing. Tip: there are some rubbish bins but not a lot; people tend to take their rubbish with them. The grounds are kept exceptionally clean.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE OPENING HOURS DETAILED HERE ARE FOR JULY AND AUGUST…read more My family has a love-hate relationship with Waterworld. The kids love it and the husband and I hate it. Honestly, I find it almost physically painful to go there but my children get so much unadulterated pleasure from it that I grit my teeth and go. They don't see the heaving crowds, the film of god knows what on the top of the water and the toddlers with dangerously loose swim nappies. They don't hear the ear splitting noise or feel the cold blasts of cold air. What they see is the large pool with a Jacuzzi along one side, the water slides and best of all the huge pirate ship in the middle of the second pool, complete with water blasters, slides and rope climbs. When I describe it like that I can see why they love it so much. If your kids can swim, they will just love this place. You could still take non swimmers but you'll have to be very vigilant and follow them the whole time as they can go under the pirate ship where the water is about 4 feet deep. If your kids can be left unattended, you can have a rest in one of the Jacuzzis which are for adults only. Tinies can also enjoy the paddling pool. I am a bit of a germ phobe and thought the changing rooms and toilets could have been cleaner on our last 2 visits. Here's my top tip - if you are going during the summer hols, ring ahead and ask if they have a summer scheme booked in that day. If they say yes, then don't go as it will be unbearably busy. Ask which days there are no summer schemes expected and go then instead. You'll spend a couple of hours there so at about £16 for a family of four, it's pretty good value for money and will totally exhaust the kids for the rest of the day.

It's also one of the dwindling number of north coast beaches to retain its blue flag status so if you don't fancy paddling in a weak sewage solution then choose this beach for your summer days out. This is my favourite thing about Portstewart Strand - you can drive your car on and park for the day. So no having to lug your pic nic, towels, buckets and spades from the car to the beach. Just open the car door and let it all fall out. If anyone gets cold or tired, they can just jump in the car and snuggle down for a while. You have to pay for what is definitely a privilege - just £4.50 to drive on and park for the day and if you go off season when the facilities are closed, you don't have to pay at all. I for one have no problem paying the National Trust £4.50 to park in a truly spectacular car park. So, the facilities - what exactly is there? Probably the best facilities I have seen at a beach anywhere in Northern Ireland. Clean toilets, showers and first aiders, as well as a shop where you can but sweets and drinks and last minutes buckets and spades. Join the National Trust, and I have promised myself I will this summer, and you can drive onto the beach as many times as you want without having to pay.
