Disorganized no support instructors are very hit or miss

I took a summer and took chemistry 101 and 102 at St Cloud state to save a year of chemistry at the U of MN. I studied very hard and got A's for both classes. Then I resumed my studies at the U of M. I struggled in Chemistry as I didn't have the appropriate background. It was tough. It was an eye opener for me. I took 2 years of Chemistry at the U of M. If you want a lessor degree that you can float through things then maybe this is the campus for you. But if you want to excel in what you do, maybe you should think about other schools. On the plus side, St. Cloud State is an affordable institution of higher education. When it comes right down to it, certain degrees are going to be the same pretty much wherever you get them, so why not pay less? On the negative side, SCSU is largely a commuter school. As a result, there isn't a lot of community that develops here. With so many students coming and going, it can be difficult to connect, unless you get involved in some student groups or activities on campus. Also, some of the professors really shouldn't be teaching. On more than one occasion, our children have had professors who have cancelled class a good quarter of the time, leaving you wondering what it is that you're paying for. This happened in a Spanish class as well as a dance class. The new library on campus is a wonderful building. Some of the other buildings on campus, less so. It does seem as if more money is put into the hockey team than most anything else on campus. If you're looking for an inexpensive degree and don't care so much about the campus environment or feeling connected to your peers, SCSU can be a good option. read more

Highly recommend, especially the Atmospheric and Hydrological Sciences department. Many of the staff from math and physics were also great to work with. The former Aviation department being shut down was disgraceful though. My only negative experience with this school was with the administration, specifically a professor named Tracey Ore when she an interim provost. read more

I didn't think SCSU would have a Yelp page but here it is. I graduate this May with a master's degree in criminal justice and can honestly say I've never worked this hard in my entire life. I'm also an ASL interpreter and learning sign language was easier than this program has been. Let me preface this by saying that I will also be completing my 12th year of my college education with 4 degrees under my belt from 4 different schools. The teachers treat you like an adult and put an enormous amount of energy in to make sure you do well. Put it this way, the more you put in, the more they put in. You work hard, they work hard. I've loved it here and while I'm excited to graduate, I'll be sad to go. I do know though that I will keep in touch with my teachers because of the lasting impact they've made on my life in such a short time. read more

I know countless people who have chosen St. Cloud State University for their education. It is affordable to enroll here however, I also know many people who have transferred from SCSU. I seem to always here the phrase, "I can't wait to get out of here" in reference to the institution. As a long-time citizen of St. Cloud, I've heard all of the horror stories that come out of this school. Also, the feeling of "safety" on this campus has plummeted. A lot of students do not feel comfortable walking alone on this college campus. In recent years, they've also made the decision to charge students and community members for parking, so good luck finding parking. I came here to take my GRE test, and even the meter parking is expensive. Unless you're really in a financial bind, I wouldn't recommend SCSU. The two things I will give SCSU credit for is their international office and their Department of Campus Involvement. They do their best to put on fun events for students and those living in the St. Cloud community! Their annual Lemonade Art Fair is a classic...it's a favorite amongst those who live here. I enjoy seeing all of the local art showcased, and the lemonade never fails either. read more

I have been left utterly disillusioned by St. Cloud State University in recent months. I'm an alumna of SCSU and have applied for a few jobs there in the past couple of years. I knew I may not have been the 'right candidate' for a couple of the roles (and even removed myself from one search, as I didn't think it'd be the right fit). In November 2016, I applied for a great role at SCSU. It seemed written for me and I was confident it could be a really great fit. But I never so much as received a blanket rejection email, telling me I wasn't advancing, didn't get it, etc. I even emailed HR for an update and it went ignored (I found out through my own research the role had been filled!). This spring (2017), I applied for a different role, still hopeful SCSU had good recruitment practices. I had a phone interview (which I think are a terrible practice to begin with) and then crickets. EVEN if I bombed my interview, I at least deserve the courtesy of SOME form of communication that I wasn't advancing. Nothing. Zero. No follow up or rejection letter or anything. I really find this tasteless and lacking. Candidates oftentimes spend hours / days / weeks preparing, prepping, researching, taking time out to interview. It's careless to treat candidates in this manner. I wasn't bitter until recently. It's not about NOT getting the job (some I wasn't right for, I admit!). It's about respecting candidates (I know SCSU isn't the only company with this lacking practice but they are the ones I'm calling out for my personal experience). Awful. I'm somewhat embarrassed to have attended this school, in hindsight, as a job seeker now. read more

I returned from St. Cloud State yesterday, having attended the Gala on Thursday evening and several formal and informal gatherings of alumni and current students. I was the first woman in my family to graduate from college, having followed my two older brothers to SCSU. I consider, in addition to my degrees, that the lifelong relationships I built while attending school to be an added bonus. The size of the school made involvement in activities and organizations easier than some larger schools I had considered and I appreciated not needing a vehicle while I was there. The convenience of on-campus living and the commitment of the Residential Life staff to enhancing my educational experience outside the classroom were instrumental to my career upon graduating. I appreciated seeing the ongoing efforts of the school to respond to the changing needs of students. People starting school after working, returning for specific courses, obtaining advanced degrees while working or entering for a Bachelors degree immediately after High School. SCSU will work with you and is a great financial value. I grew up in Minneapolis and was reminded this weekend of how many friends I made from out of state, small Midwestern communities and International students as well. It's beautiful riverbank setting only serves to enhance the time spent in St. Cloud as a student or returning as an alumni. The collaboration between long term faculty and staff, as well as new arrivals is inspiring and the students benefit from their commitment to provide a comprehensive education. It was a great weekend celebrating the first 150 years of this storied institution and learning about the positive trajectory the University is on to meet the changing needs of a diverse student population, many with their sights on careers the founders and original students could not have imagined! read more

Probably some of the best and worst years of my late teens/early 20's were spent at SCSU and I wouldn't change any of it. SCSU wasn't my first choice of colleges to go but I am definitely glad I went here. The staff are all really knowledgeable in their respective areas of study; many have actual real world experience they share with their students. If you're looking to meet new people or just find something to fill your free time (when you're not studying/doing homework of course...) check out the various student organizations on campus. I was recently in Cloud town to visit a friend and decided to check out the campus since I hadn't been back in a few years. They've done a great job updating the buildings and finally have an enormous parking ramp at the north end of the campus. I can honestly say that going to SCSU was a great experience and provided me with a quality education at a decent price. Go Huskies! read more

Only good thing about this university is men's hockey. Half the professors barely speak English and it seems like they care more about the international students than anyone else. This university is failing just look at enrollment numbers. I transferred out of here for many reasons and I made the right choice. read more

I met someone on campus today for tutoring purposes and found it to be a beautiful campus. It is well laid out, has greenery galore, and the buildings are kept up (they don't appear old and rundown). Today I spent my time in three different buildings over about two hours and found each building to contain everything a student would need. The employees working around campus were very nice and helped me find my way around when I needed it. The only complaint I have, is that the campus can become very disorienting and you can become lost very quickly if you don't know your way around; I feel they should have more campus maps available, so I don't feel like I'm bothering everyone on campus. read more

I was a St. Cloud kid who's dad had to push to go to college with a $2,500 high school graduation gift, which paid for my four years at SCSU. I graduated in 78 with an accounting degree. Now, almost 40 years later and retired almost 6 years, after 32 plus years as a tax accountant (the last 20 working international taxation issues) I have to say that my 4 years at SCSU built the necessary foundation for my very challenging and fulfilling career. read more

SCSU is in the top 20% of most affordable colleges in the country and living off campus can make it even more affordable. It has a division one hockey team and many sports programs. It is proud of its long history as a school of business, criminal justice, nursing, teaching, and science. Has one of the two bachelor degree special education teaching programs in Minnesota and is by far the most affordable choice available. It boasts a surprisingly friendly and diverse population of students. As a non-traditional 32 year old student it was interesting to take classes with freshmen just out of high school who did not always take the work seriously, however the returning sophomore/junior/senior students have been helpful and extremely friendly. Update: I am not a very good student but somehow managed to graduate with a 3.64 GPA and I was hired as a special education teacher a few months later. Thanks SCSU! read more
