Having overlooked it as a resident for a long time perhaps my thoughts might be considered helpful.
Right now, it's nearing its most lushness and wonderful to see. I am very lucky as I see all four seasons in varying stages - every day. There are a few parents and children playing on the swings, somebody settled and reading at a bench; someone occasionally walks a path with a dog (and poopscoop) while joggers jog the outskirting pavements.
This is The Park at its Near Best.
Then there are the sunny, warm days when Mums and baby/toddlers enjoy everything The Park has to offer and then, when school is out, a lot of family time. It's heartwarming to see so many young Mums, and Grannies doing what they do best.
This is The Park being A Park.
But, The Pond is a makeshift arena for skateboarders, roller skaters, trick cyclists, et al. The Pond - to be filled any day now - in which large numbers of gulls/birds will splash and bathe at dawn rendering the water, not yet drained and refreshed from the day before, supposedly pretty dodgy! When The Pond IS filled, The Park then becomes like Brighton Beach on a bad day but, that too, passes til next day.
For the last 3-4 years, from April til October (if those are good months) at some weekends, ie. Fri eve, Saturday and Sunday, we have people, perhaps students, lighting barbecues, beating drums which sound like bongos, singing and generally behaving as though it is their right to cause disturbance late into the evening perhaps because it is a public park. It is without any regard whatsoever for local residents. They park their 'vans' alongside, causing obstructions, sometimes for days on end. Apart from the drunks who fall out of pubs and get to The Park where they find it extremely amusing to 'take a dip' and splash around in The Pond, we also have what seem to be youngsters in the early hours who find a sing song, complete with guitars, is just the thing to wake the residents rather than birdsong.
For those occasional visitors and I mean those who don't experience immediate aggravation, it is very easy to see only the good things about The Park.
Strictures and rules should be made and somone should enforce them. The problem are exacerbated by those, the majority, fuelled by drinking and drugs. If they could be, at the very least, a quiet gathering of people who want to enjoy as The Park for its own sake, that would be a step in the right direction. read more
