Saturday evening - ended up sitting in the bar which we were told was full service, because we were also told the entire main dining room was reserved. Order taking was good and the pretzel appetizer was very good. Things went downhill after that - our meal order was forgotten by the kitchen, we had three couples around us get served before we did and they came in well after we did. We had to ask where our meal was! When my burger arrived it was supposed to be cooked to medium and it was very rare. I could only eat a few bites of the burger. We were not asked how our meal was until after we were finished eating and asking for to-go boxes. I mentioned the burger was rare and I was offered to have them fix it, by that time we were done and ready to leave. The bill was brought to the table and it was wrong too, the appetizers were supposed to be half-price (5pm special price) and they came on the bill at full-price. They corrected the pricing for the appetizers and took off the burger. Very disappointed in the service and meal for our first visit to The Square Root. read more

The worst customer service I have ever experienced. If you want to wait 20 minutes in between each time the waiter approaches your table, this is the place for you! Is the food good? Who knows! We waited 15 minutes for a menu and then another 20 minutes and no one ever came back to check on us. In addition to that, we were told there was a one hour wait inside but that outdoor seating was first come first serve. When a table got up and left outside and we had been waiting at least 35 minutes and went to sit down - we were told the hostess misinformed us - in the meantime, 10 people had added their names to the waitlist for outside while we were sitting there. We came to the Square Root after a long day of hiking and it did not disappoint! All four of the people in our party ordered different items and loved them all! A rare 5-stars from our perspective. Our experience on Wednesday night could not have been better. With no reservations as their policy, we planned to check in and have a few drinks from the bar. The bartender was excellent, as good as they come, including pushing a bottle of 1/2 price wine at $12 instead of ordering by the glass. Other drinks expertly prepared and served. Seating was within 10 minutes. The menu is varied and spectacular. Server pushed appetizers. I'm glad we resisted although they looked great. I had the best ever Duck a L'Orange. It was scrumptiously crisp yet the meat was delicious and the sauce was the best I've had. Accompanying veggies and starch were a delicious meal in themselves. Chicken marsala was raved about by my wife. Sis's hanger steak was equally spectacular. Our sincere compliments to the chef. Utterly disappointed and disgusted with my experience. Visiting from out of town and wanting to celebrate our engagement with a nice meal. We checked in and were given a 40 min wait. No issue at all as we wanted to walk around some. We received a text that our table was ready. Approached the hostess who then began apologizing that the bar staff had seated two separate parties in front of us and so we would now need to wait an additional 20-40 min. As the hostess was explaining this a woman who already been seated interrupted our conversation to let the server know she was going to sit with another table. I excused myself and told her we were speaking and she needed to wait. This poor excuse of a woman and mother (children in tote) spoke over me and the hostess. I mentioned that not only was she out of line--literally and figuratively but that also she was not in Compliance by not wearing a mask. I mention this and she proceeds to call me a bitch. The hostess, doing nothing. Once this lady walked away I asked are we not supposed to wear one (governor has set in motion masks at all times) she says no, it's optional. Good to know. I'll be reporting this too. I asked for the manager who took about 10 min to come out, might as well have stayed where he was. He offered no apology and said the hostess was 19 and not in the position to handle unruly guest. Perhaps let's not put a timid 19 year old who can't handle stressful situations or keep things running smoothly by herself. A sure sign of piss poor management. Will not come here again. We found another location that took us in right away and were extremely amazing. read more

This little place is awesome!! So, long story short, we took a mini-trip from Asheville to Brevard to look at holiday decorations and window shop. It's a lovely little town known for having white squirrels running around. Strange, but true. Anyway, after wandering the small downtown area, we decided to grab dinner before heading back to the booming metropolis of Ashevegas. Lo and behold, tucked away in a side alley, we thankfully found Square Root. It was a chilly day so we unfortunately did not have an opportunity to enjoy the outdoor patio, but we were pleasantly surprised by the ambience of the dining area and bar inside. The floors are really cool and made of small pieces of wood, the lighting is perfect, and the exposed brick wall makes for a very warm and inviting dining space. The menu is somewhat small but everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. An added bonus is the local beer on tap! I highly recommend stopping in for a meal if you're in Brevard. I can't wait to head back down this summer for a beer on the patio! read more

Where to eat dinner in Brevard on a Sunday evening? Apparently The Square Root is your only option, and that's okay. We were just glad to find someplace open and interesting (because who wants boring when you're on vacation?) Despite being packed, we were seated immediately at an outside table. The staff was very friendly and the menu presented some significant decisions. The main entrees were around $20, but the sandwich options (closer to $10) did not lack for intrigue. I was nearly sold on the black bean burger before picking the fish tacos with sweet potato chips. The tacos were very good, although I forgot to ask our server if anyone had ever managed to eat them with their hands- they were so overstuffed as to be indisputably plate-bound, mandating knife and fork without even attempting a lift. Also at our table was the lobster macaroni, a salad (this looked seriously good, topped with fried goat cheese) and a chicken sandwich, all reportedly enjoyed. Several local beers were offered on draft, with my party opting for three different Brevard Brewing options. Afterward we headed over to the Brevard tasting room for one more. read more

Tucked away on a charming alley off of Main St. This is a quaint spot. Food is average. Not bad but not delicious nor does it leave you wanting more. It satisfies. Each time we've been the food (proteins to be specific) are over seasoned and fries undercooked. The salads are good though. It is one of the better restaurants in Brevard. I would recommend it for a good salad and a low key atmosphere. Staff is friendly and that is always appreciated. read more

Totally stumbled on this place after a nice long day of hiking John Rock followed by a stop at the Hub and Oskar Blues; the decision was to just eat in the area. Couldn't be happier about what I found, right in the middle of downtown is an alley where you find a lively little patio across from a chocolate shop. On this particular night there were a couple of musicians playing for the restaurant. Not particularly large but it is nice spot and unless you are willing to eat in the bar you better have a reservation. It is listed as american and asian fusion, but there is a whole lot more going on. I started with an appetizer of the fried green tomatoes and they are by far the best I have had in the area. After that I had the shrimp street tacos with sweet potato chips and those were equally impressive. While the sweet potato chips were fantastic the tomatoes won the meal for me. The staff are very friendly and while they can appear sparse they do a good job and are very helpful with recommendations. All in all a great spot and one I was fortunate to stumble upon. read more

After a day of hiking I wanted a steak. I was directed to the Square Root on the recommendation of ordering the 10oz bone in Manhattan Strip. $24. It did not disappoint! First though we started with an app of the fried green tomatoes. I finally decided to try these and I was missing out! The were fried perfectly with a freshly sliced tomato, 5 thick slices. Enjoyed! Now on the main course. The Manhattan Strip was what I was expecting. Cooked perfectly to my order of med rare. Very nice searing and very tender! Complemented with a red wine glaze, garlic pommes frites and sprouts. (Sprouts are not my thing but this meal rocked, the frites were awesome)! After enjoying the steak with 2 pints of Guinness I couldn't be happier! read more

Rez for 7:30 for 5 and they put us on a pretty small table but other than that it was great food, service and beer. I had the trout but also tried the hangar steak and they were both delicious. The lamb at the table was over cooked but still pretty good. It's half off bottles of wine on Monday so that was a plus as well! read more

We went on a Sunday for brunch and got there right as they opened. I'll start with the positive. The atmosphere is great. Very cozy and the patio has a nice feel to it. The coffee was hot and enjoyable and the wait staff kept it filled so props for the service. We started with a bag of Beignets. I'm not sure what we got could actually be considered Beignets. It reminded me more of those canned biscuit donuts that you roll in cinnamon and sugar. The kind my parents used to make as a special treat on Saturday morning. Very doughy and dense. My wife ordered the vegetable omelette. Most of the vegetables were frozen and it was noticeable. Especially the spinach. The flavor was quite bland. I ordered the Chicken and Waffles. The waffle was very dense and hard. Not what you would expect from a Belgian waffle. The chicken was frozen tenders. Very well may have been off the shelf Tysons brand. My children had the basic breakfast. The eggs and sausage were fine, but the biscuit was dry and hard. Overall the experience lackluster and we won't return. Maybe their dinners are better, but their brunch was bad. read more

When you enter the restaurant you feel like you are entering your friend's home. Genuine smiles and southern hospitality is a great first impression. Once seated our drink orders were quickly taken as my kids' needs were addressed with a smile. In fact, my son accidentally hit the glass of water and it fell on the floor shattering into big chunks on the floor. As apologetic as I could be the smiles kept coming. Genuine kindness abound as the day progressed. I ordered the smoked salmon omelette and boy it hit the spot. There was a specialty bead that came with it (I'll have to get this yummy recipe). The kids enjoyed it. The adults enjoyed it. It's the type of restaurant where you not only have amazing food and a good atmosphere, but you truly feel welcomed. So we're vacationing in the area and thought this restaurant sounded fun and interesting. We tried to make reservations online but could not and were advised online to call the restaurant. Tried to call but the line was busy for literally 10+ minutes (we tried about 7 times to call). When finally got the girl on the phone, we were told that reservations were not taken by phone. When we explained that we were advised online to call, we were then told that the deadline for taking reservations was 5 pm. We asked since it was 5:02 if an exception could be made and the girl said no, but that after 7:30 we could try to come by. Honestly never had an experience like that in all our years of dining out, so we crossed this restaurant off the list. Hopefully management will see fit to change these apparently very strict rules. read more

Excellent example of great food. Chef is from Miami and he out did him self. We came at the off time after lunch and before dinner, limited menu to sandwiches, salads or tacos. Fish tacos with beans and rice in a blue shell, amazing. Grilled chicken with cheese of choice moist and generous size. London broil was tender and au jous not salty, served on fresh roll, ask for horseradish to top it off. Then topped off with keylime pie on a chocolate crust, yummy! Lots of homemade desserts. I'm a local and have eaten here many times but no more. I booked a table almost a week in advance but when we arrived we were not on their list and made to feel like WE were the problem, even by the general manager! After showing proof of our booking we were found a table but the waiter was the RUDEST and stupidest I've EVER, EVER encountered. He made a big deal, 3 times in the loudest voice possible, that I "interrupted" him about the specials. We were only there for a light bite before a concert and were on a tight schedule. My salad entree failed to materialize because the waiter was as dumb as bricks. Don't count on this place to do the right thing. As a local I will be going elsewhere in future. read more

Almost three stars, but the distracted and dismissive attitude of the greeting hostess tipped the balance. I had the London Broil sandwich and it was tasty and filling, but the au jus was heavily salted. The side of fries were quite strange and the result of some bizarre cooking method (perhaps a type of flash frying?) Some of the shoestring fries were crispy on the outside but under-cooked on the inside -- something I've never experienced as under-cooking usually means it's also limp (a fate a few fries suffered), so in a way it's a technical accomplishment, but not one to be proud of. We also had an appetizer of fried green tomatoes, and their take was not pleasant. They were extremely thick cuts and the interior had liquefied in spots. The crust was a heavy and thick coating similar to latex and required the strenuous application of a knife to pierce. They were drizzled with a Dijon mustard sauce, with the mustard flavor being exceptionally strong. So instead of complimenting or counterbalancing the tang of the tomato, it just added to the powerful twang and we didn't bother finishing them. Our meal was further disturbed by a waitress propping open the door to the patio so the cigarette smoke could assault us. On the positive side of the atmosphere was the unique flooring. read more

I had, likely, the best stuffed trout dish that I have ever tasted snd I order trout often. The calamari appetizer was a delight. Square Root also has a very nice wine list.
