I visited my first diner in New Jersey at age 18. Suffice it to say, I am no diner connoisseur, though I do quite like taking my breakfast in one. This place is cute. Located in Tribeca, it has the look and feel of a diner with booth seats and a long narrow interior. I've seen Foxy Brown and Orlando Bloom on the same block 1x when I was eating here! I used to work nearby and I still frequent this diner. Note that it is not 24 hours like many other diners are. I've order burgers, gyros, baked chicken, friend chicken and salads here. Service is friendly-and everything comes quick. Not the best presentation but then again this is a diner. Great prices and good size portions-you will feel happy when leaving! I hope this diner doesn't close like the nearby Moondance Diner did. It would be a shame. read more

Square diner is actually kind of a rectangle. It looks like one of those old subway car style diners, pretty cool. I met Rusty here for lunch the other day. Am I the only person in the world that doesn't really trust diner food? I always end up getting breakfast...because you can't really screw that up right? I got two eggs with potatoes and toast. The eggs were a weird color. Like neon. It scared me a little. I focused on the potatoes after that. An average NYC diner. Rusty's burger looked okay. Also, the mozzarella sticks were decent. Not the best experience ive had, seeing as how I went about three weeks ago I had difficulty remembering this place. I attend law school in the area so I decided to stop by with my friend because we were hungry. It is SMALL. An uncomfortable small actually. There are probably 12 booths, a few of them only for 2 people (with a huge bar under the table so forget being comfortable while eating) The food is okay, nothing spectacular. By now it is common knowledge that TriBeCa is horribly gentrified, and if you want something without the hip edge and more down to earth, this is the place that you can get some refuge. But that's about it. Their food is not exactly bad. My eggs Benedict was adequate enough and had a good portion size per dollar. But when you're in a city full of decent pastrami places, serving mediocre pastrami at the same price doesn't do much good for you - and their pastrami is no exception. Way too salty, far from juicy enough, and charges you no less than the biggest tourist trap Katz's for something way inferior. I am not a fan of the way they cook omelettes (too well done for me) but I've heard an exact opposite argument, so this is probably just a matter of who's in charge in the afternoon hours. After all, this is the only diner in the neighborhood without a line on a lazy Sunday, and I guess it was for a reason. I'll probably hop in if I'm dying for some comfort food and I happen to be close by, but I don't see myself making the trip for it. read more

It feels like the city grew up around this little gem of location. It's ancient, authentic, original. which is why i want to love, love, the food more. but really, its just what you'd expect. Just not amazing. The corned beef hash was very good, potatoes well seasoned. However the monte christo was not a winner. it was 2 pieces of french toast with some fresh sliced turkey, some ham and an unfortunate amount of cheese over the top. I will go back but i think i'll try the house made corned beef or the homemade chili. but I won't be doing the monte christo again. there's plenty of other tempting things on the menu. read more

Located on a sleepy corner in TriBeCa, it's not a crowded destination tourists flock to like the Empire Diner, but it's been serving customers for over 100 years, providing outstanding, friendly service, delicious food, and rustic ambiance. This is a good spot for a quick meal. We dropped by because we wanted breakfast. Very small place. The service is fast and quick. Food came out pretty quickly. The eggs and bacon were standard. Unfortunately closed during COVID winter but I believe reopening during spring. Ownership here is SO NICE and welcoming. They have great bagels, breakfast food, and perfect diner standards. It is located on the edge of a street very close to the Franklin 1 train. Square diner is located in an old train car, furnishings are original I believe and it has a super retro feel. It's extremely unique and I believe it's been family owned since the 40s. They also have a liquor license and are available to rent for private parties during the evening. I've been there for a party and it was so fun!!! read more

This place has old school diner fare done right, and is perfectly out of place in the neighborhood! On a recent visit, my friend had an omlet stuffed with bacon, tomato, and cheese, served with home fires and toast, while I opted for a pattie melt that included grilled onions and mushrooms. I selected the 'deluxe' option and was rewarded by perfect french fries and sublime onion rings (mixed in at my request). It was a perfect hangover cure meal, and was a lot of food for a little money! At first glance, it's a little out of place in TriBeCa. An honest-to-goodness diner. I used to come here a lot when I worked down here in this nabe, and I just went in again yesterday. I for one, love it here. A MILLION times better than Bubby's around the corner. In every way. Quicker service Better food. More bang for your buck. Less pretentious. Cleaner. Everything. I had a grilled cheese and a bowl of chicken noodle soup and a diet coke for about 12 bucks. Not bad, not bad. It was a cold day and all I really wanted was something to warm me up. This did the trick. The only thing that is off-putting is that it's cash only. I got out my card to pay and then "Sweetie, it's cash only." Embarrassing, since there are signs EVERYWHERE. Oops. So I went to the ATM, paid in CASH, and put on some lip gloss. "Honey, you are beautiful- why do you do that?" So as far as the service is concerned, yes, yes YES! I love the server- he is cute, sweet, and complimentary. I don't even know his name, but I would come back all the time simply to be told how beautiful I am. Both times: bad food, bad service. -waitress gave change back to wrong person -waitress served a drink that obviously had a paper wrapper floating on the top of it, did not apologize when we sent it back. Overall, the food here is pretty good. I did enjoy my pancakes because they were not burnt and very fluffy, however, I thought when I ordered blueberry pancakes it meant that there would be blueberries mixed into the batter and all they do is just put a bunch of blueberries on top of your pancakes. Nope. Came here Friday, 9/17, exactly 45 minutes before Square closed. I had a hankering for some apple pie and coffee. Before I could even sit down the man behind the bar was giving me the stink eye. When I asked if I could sit he passive aggressively, under his breath, says "we're about to close man..". I responded that I thought they were open until 9. He then retorted "yeah, we gotta leave at nine!", then condescendingly, "it's okay, sit, sit, sit". I told him how rude and unprofessional he was for treating me that way and left. Management: if you care at all about your business, get ride of that guy. I've worked in hospitality 10 years and this kind of demeanor is toxic and will only drive more and more business away. I work 2 blocks away from here quite often. My dining experience at Square was consistent with the majority of previous Yelp reviews. It's classic diner food - no frills and exactly what you would expect. I ordered the Lumberjack breakfast, pretty good value for what you pay. Service was a little on the slow side for a diner, but we weren't in a rush. I really love diners like Square. They seem to be set in an earlier, easier time in America. A time when beef didn't have to be marketed as "grass fed" because, well... cows eat grass, not corn. A time Julia Childs was really the only person who cared to be discussing foods on TV (not some cranky, cookie-cutter tattooed ex-bass player inspired by Iron Chef). A time when people actually talked to strangers in public instead of being glued to their Instagram feed. I wish just for a moment I could live that sort of life, and this TriBeCa hideaway provides that brief escape. Chock-full of classics, I doubt their menu has changed much since it sprouted in 1971. Scrambles, pancakes, hashes, hearty sandwiches, et al. dot the menu with whimsical service and no sense of hipster-revival irony at all. Just a good, downhome art-deco diner that has somehow has survived the test of time. What's not to love? read more

Not bad. Super cute decor, looks like an old train car turned into a diner! Service was good - the guy serving us HATED us at first and was giving us the worst attitude, but then something happened and he loved us and was really nice. Perhaps he remembered that this was his job and we were customers and he should at least fake it. But whatever. Food was nothing special. An Ode To My Favorite Burger Eastern european waitress has a nice smile doesn't seem to mind when we are five not four as previously implied. Sitting outside, we watch the high-rises rise. Burgers all around, come fast despite the lunch rush. Cheese, a little grease done just right. Two stars, and here's why: - The food itself was average, perhaps slightly above average because it was 3pm and I was famished from not having anything else to eat all day. I ordered a chicken salad platter with extra jalapeños - my friends ordered various other entrees, including the Reuben platter and the lumberjack breakfast special. What I will say is that the portions were all huge. - However, one pro: the prices are reasonable, especially given that the place is in TriBeCa. - The service was deplorable. Our server didn't bring out cutlery for half the table; we had to ask after an uncomfortably long period of time passed, and it became clear he wasn't going to do it on his own. Again, we had to ask him to fill up the water. He barked at my friend who wanted to make a substitution (no need to raise your voice, bro!) and was very rude when he told us the diner was closing and he had to leave... I would probably not go back here - unless I were starving and there were no other food in sight. read more

Cash only!!! Last time I checked this was the 21st century. Of course I didn't know it was cash only until I go to pay. Then they have THEIR ATM that charges a fee along with my banks fee. My basic ham and cheese omelet with large orange juice turned into a $30 meal. 18.50 bill, 3.00 tip, 2.00 their atm fee, 5.00 personal bank fee. They also had a extra $2.00 charge for cheddar cheese for my ham and cheese omelet. It was removed when I complained. Finally the food wasn't anything special, omelet was runny. I've came here twice and all though the staff is friendly the food is mediocre at best. Came here for lunch and got a bacon cheese burger with mozerella sticks. I witnessed the cook grab the buns for the burger with his bare hands no gloves, and the mozerella sticks were over done ie... the cheese was oozing out of the sticks and they were burnt. They also don't take credit card, and they're located in tribeca nyc. I don't see this place being here within the next couple of years. Although I'm a fan of diners, I don't see this place trying to stay relevant going into the next couple years, and will probably close down. A friendly staff can't save you. read more

LOCATION: This happens to be a cozy little diner located in TriBeCa. When I say cozy I hope you're picturing a small intimate space. The place is pretty narrow and there are only a handful of booths available for seating. FOOD: What did I enjoy during my outing here? I ordered the eggs Benedict, which come with a side of potatoes, and an iced coffee. The ham was a little burnt and they weren't the best eggs Benedict I've ever tried but they weren't the worst either. The iced coffee was pretty good, but needed a sh*tload of sugar to sweeten that baby up. FINAL VERDICT: Food is decent. Service is good. Prices are regular for this neighborhood. There's an episode of "Seinfeld" where Jerry regrets the message he writes on an autographed photo: "Nothing could be finer than eating in your diner." That popped into my head today as I lunched at Square, a smallish, cylinder-shaped, deliciously out-of-place diner with a giant menu of all the usual suspects, plus some Greek specialties, like Shish Kebob and Moussaka. (Yes, there ARE some finer things, but... just go with me on this.) Seeing Square's autographed photos of past and present "Law & Order" dudes --- Benjamin Bratt, Jesse Martin, the late great Jerry Orbach --- reinforced the "Seinfeld" thought. I was struck by the friendliness and efficiency of the service. My order was taken before I even sat down by a young woman with a lovely smile (who bore a slight resemblance to Catalina Sandino Moreno from "Maria Full of Grace"). She and her two male counterparts (all dressed in crisp white oxfords and black pants) deftly handled the lunchtime onslaught of hungry construction workers. "Yo, can I get a BLT on whole wheat, easy on the mayo?" Not a problem. The surroundings are unique and not for the snooty or claustrophobic. You've got stools at the counter (about 8 or 9), and tight booths for couples and foursomes. The ceiling, constructed with glossy wood paneling, gives the place the Poseidon effect: it feels up-side-down. The size of the restrooms mimics the johns in campers and airplanes. Me? I treated myself to a chocolate shake and loved it! (Outdoor seating is available when the weather's nice, so look for me to treat myself again come Springtime. Don't forget to say hi!) read more

Okay, first of all - LOOK AT THE PLACE! It's a hole in the wall crappy diner - and you go in there expecting fresh calimari? avocado wraps? c'mon people. On my way back to the office today, I stopped in for a tuna fish and lettuce on rye and a diet coke. THIS is what this place does well. you know, diner food. sandwiches and sodas. I'm pretty certain their fries are good too as I witnessed some being passed around. The guy at the counter next to me was eating a gyro that looked pretty good as well. The tuna fish sandwich was heavenly and exactly what I wanted - heavy on the mayo and celery. The service was speedy and friendly enough - I mean I wasn't expecting a massage while I waited or anything - I just sat at the counter and read a paper while waiting for my sandwich. I did notice the waitstaff yelling across the room to a customer that they were out of string beans - that struck me as a little odd - the entire place is 30 feet long, you couldn't walk over there? Regardless, I got what I wanted and I was very happy with their fountain diet coke instead of them just throwing me a can. Fountain sodas always taste better so I appreciated that the lady gave me a choice. She also included some cole slaw and a pickle with my sandwich - nice surprise, though the cole slaw is a little too sweet for my tastes. My only real complaint is that a tuna fish sandwich with lettuce on rye and a fountain diet coke cost $9.70 total. That seems pretty high to me, but I blame the real estate - it is Tribeca, after all, and I'm sure this diner has been around long before it became the trendy neighborhood it currently is. I will definitely be back for a nostalgic lunch at some point though. :) read more

The best part about this place is the service; they are really nice and pretty quick. There's also some nice outdoor seating in the Summer. The fact that they are the only real diner in the area makes them indispensable. That having been said, the Square Diner's food is only pretty good. I like the American Melt and their soups the best, and I have been for lunch many times, but not for breakfast. There are quite a few diners with better food out there, so I would say that if you're a local and want diner food go for it. If you're a visitor to town and want a "diner experience", however, I think there are some better options out there for you. 3.5 stars. read more
