Vancouver Photo Workshops - 1 Day Photo Course on Nikon Cameras

Overall I would say I was pleased with the 1 day Nikon camera course I took here. I paid the early…read morebird rate of $142 which is perhaps a little bit much, and probably what prevents me from giving it 5 stars. The instructor (Ross) was a good speaker and teacher, and clearly passionate about photography. He was extremely patient with all the different types of Nikons that the students brought and took the time to answer every question thrown his way. Just a couple of small negatives: the classroom was a bit too warm (no windows, typical of warehouse-type photo studios), and there was no advance info on lunch break times & facilities, which would be useful as the course runs from 10 AM to 5 PM. Now, if I could just remember everything we were taught...

I registered for the Intermediate Digital Photography course last year, eager to follow up on the Beginner one I'd just completed at Langara, while saving a bit of money. Eager is key, because only after I hastily registered (the course was starting within a few days and I didn't want it to fill up) did I notice the course outline, which was buried in one of the drop-down menus, and saw that there would be a lot of model work, which I had no interest in. So, I called them, less than 30 minutes after registering, and explained myself, but they refused to give me a full refund. Now, the remaining amount was only $30 - something about the company they go through for visa payments - but I'd just donated $30 for half an hour of nothing, and they were completely unwilling to budge and help me out. Did they do anything wrong? No, they followed their policy, but there are always exceptions to rules, and good customer service seeks to understand the big picture, and make clients happy. In this regard, they failed miserably. Instead, they seemed to prioritize making money, and for that reason, they've lost a client for life. I've not booked with them again since, and I never will. Also, I've heard (and just looking at their course outlines by comparison) that they're nowhere near as thorough, or therefore educational, as Langara. Yes, Langara is more expensive, but you get what you pay for. I wish VPW would have made a better impression on me, but they chose to prioritize themselves over their client, and so lost out on both counts.

When i went to Arts Umbrella from ages 10-12, it was easy to get a hold of management for any reason. There was always a manager in the building. The children there clearly enjoyed their classes, and the parents enjoyed how easy enrolment was, and seemed to enjoy the environment as well. Now? Turnover seems to be at an all time high, and management is impossible to reach. If you have a complaint, it will not be handled by management, rather the lovely Front desk workers that seem to clean up after this managers messes, and actually keep the place running. As I mentioned, I was an employee of Arts Umbrella. I took the role of Visual Arts Assistant, which meant doing all the busy work during and in between classes. I would like to add, i recieved no training, I simply signed my papers and they sent me in for my first day. The instructors i worked with? all absolutely amazing people. The lesson plans, energy, and enthusiasm were all top notch. The manager was, as i mentioned, nearly impossible to reach. She also is not interested in stepping up when were short staffed, and instead just let the instructors deal with it. I had no idea I was doing anything wrong until I was being fired. I got no feedback from my manager whatsoever. All of my coworkers said they loved me, and even the parents expressed how excited their kids were to see "Ms. Tessa". I was then given no shifts for Spring Break camps, and recieved a call a couple days ago that my employment was terminated on a "no-cause" basis. If you want to go somewhere that management actually values you as a person? Values your opinions? Even listens? This is not the place.

We hired Tosha for a birthday party. It took her a long time to get the photos to us. When we did…read morefinally get them she had provided the agreed upon edited photos but she made the selection which was not explained to us in advance and definitely not industry standard. Some of her selections were great and some of her selections were awful photos. When we inquired about them she said we could purchase additional photos for $20 each. She had some partially edited photos in her contacts so it seems this is her strategy. She partially selects photos she knows you won't want hoping you will pay more for ones you will want, the 'hero' shots. I would advise to clarify this all in advance as if you ask about it later she will direct you to her website which isn't very clear on her policy anyway. She seems to be doing her own thing. Then there is the image quality. She took some great experimental photos but she made some very amateur choices in terms of framing. Some of the photos were taken in a room with a chandelier and in those photos she used the chandelier as a foreground element (good creative choice) but allowed the chandelier to dominate the frame leaving the photo subjects in the bottom of the frame (bad creative choice). She chose to focus on the cake rather than on the three friends blowing the candles out together with many of the photos with out of focus subjects. Some of my friends at the party complained that she was intrusive and felt uncomfortable by her. She directed me to sit in an awkward pose that was not flattering and had my underwear showing and she chose that as one of her selects. When I brought it to her attention that my underwear was showing she photoshopped the under wear out thinking that would be a better choice than letting me select a photo of myself that I felt more comfortable with. During the back and forth interactions with her in communicating my dissatisfaction with her selects I got a 'lol' from her which wasn't very reassuring. All in all I would say Tosha has amateur skill with professional ego.
