I have never been so put off by the response or lack thereof when asked to voice my concerns to the proprietor. I have tried to make a personal connection with this Vet clinic but from the onset nothing but feeling as if I was doing them a favor by patronizing their business. They never answer their phones and don't try to leave a message because they do not bother to call you back. During Covid their external non-welcoming written sign on the window said do not bang on the window. I'm standing outside in 90 plus degree weather with my dog now 20 mins past my appt time and calling getting their answering machine that says don't leave a message hang up and call back. When I asked to speak to the owner I was sassily dismissed by a high school girl. The next day I received my dog's file in the mail telling me to find a new vet. Thank you whoever you are? Certainly not a business owner that cares when you can't take the time to hear feedback. I did find a new vet that is better priced and has service levels that you could not provide including online tools and wellness for your pet. I wish I could rate quality of service separate from the rest of my review because there is a difference. Dr. Simpson is AMAZING! You can tell he has been in the business for quite a long time; he knows his stuff. When I first moved to San Diego everyone recommended him. He takes the time to get to know your pet and makes sure they are comfortable with him. He doesn't make you feel inferior when you ask questions. Dr. Simpson is the only reason I go back, and I give him five stars all the way. Now for the rest of my review. Customer service gets the lower rating. There have been multiple times where I have had to take my dog elsewhere simply because I couldn't get ahold of anyone. The phone would constantly ring and ring or beep and beep no matter how many times I called or how long I waited between each call. I have also left voicemails and never received calls back. It's always a battle to get an appointment made. Other issues I have with their service is the lack of communication and disorganization in the front. read more

Wonderful service and wonderful care from Dr. Simpson! We just got our second english bulldog and he is an expert on this and all breeds. We have taken our dogs to several vets and he is the first and only one who has not tried to sell us a service we didn't need and he has VERY reasonable rates. We had some allergy issues with one of our dogs and when I asked about allergy shots he steered me away from it saying it can be very costly and very time consuming for a treatment that only has a 20% success rate. Instead he explored the least expensive and invasive options first (like over the counter medicines) and when that did not work we moved up to a prescription that he would only need 1X per day. It has worked wonderfully and saved me a great deal of money. He wonderful bedside manner and he and his staff make our dogs feel so comfortable when they go there, giving them pets and treats while waiting. We live in Escondido and make the drive an hour to Spring Valley when we need to take our pups for care. read more

If you've got a Great Dane (or a Bulldog!) Dr. Simpson is THE vet to see. I needed to have my 9 month old Great Dane neutered and pexy(stomach tack) and wanted someone who had experience that wouldn't charge me an arm & a leg. The Great Dane Club of San Diego recommended Dr. Simpson, along with another friend who had recently used him with her Dane. VCA wanted over $2000 for the neuter/pexy, and Sorrento Valley Animal Hospital wanted around $1200. Ouch!! Of course both of those hospitals are state of the art, and both surgeries would be done by "Board Certified" vets, but what I was really looking for was someone who knew MY breed. Dr. Simpson's price was nearly 1/3 of the price VCA wanted. Much more reasonable! Dr. Simpson was just that. Now, his office itself is a little out of date, but what he lacks in technology he more than makes up for in skill and obvious love for the animals he works on. My one complaint was timing of everything. I dropped my dog off at 8:30am and when I called the hospital at noon to check on him, they said the doctor was just starting to do surgeries and that he should be ready to go home around 5:30 or 6pm. By 5:30 I still hadn't heard anything, so I called back...only to get the answering machine. I finally got ahold of someone at 7pm and only then found out that he was JUST getting done with my dogs surgery and he wouldn't be ready to come home for a few hours. Fortunately, the staff was awesome and let me come down and sit with my pooch while the anesthetic wore off. 3 1/2 hours later, I was home with a VERY drunk dog, but happy that he made it thru the surgery safely! read more

Dr. Simpson is awesome! So awesome that they cant accept new patients without a referral from an existing client..... I have a Great Dane who I used to take to Animal Medical Center about 5 years ago.... they quoted over $2000 for her spay and gastropexy, Thats when I discovered Dr. Simpson - I was referred by other happy Great Dane owners.... Dr. Simpson only charged me $650! What a difference! Dr. Simpson's prices are low, the staff is great and he talks through your treatment options with you, oftentimes suggesting to go the less expensive treatment route before moving to the more expensive treatment options. Some vets price gouge by talking you into over aggressive treatment methods that are pricey, which if you don't have thousands of dollars to spend, basically forces you to put a price tag on your pets life. Its a horrible position to be in and Dr. Simpson is a pet lover himself, which is why he does not put his clients in that position if he can avoid it.... you'll always get honest advice... he'll let you know what he would do if he were in your position.... and when its time to consider euthanasia, and when not to. Zero stars. I honestly don't believe I have ever been treated so poorly by any business and am shocked given the reviews this place has received. The front desk is a hot mess and Celeste Benavides couldn't have treated me worse. I arrive at 4:05 for a 4:20 appointment. Park in the handicap spot and the receptionists and I can actually see each other through the window. They have a sign to call when you arrive and stay in car because of the Corona virus thing. Tried a couple times, no one is answering the phone (par for the course whenever I have called, no big) so I leave a message that we are here, telling them the current time and when our appt is. My poor dog has a horrid rash on his groin, is developing what seem to be boils, and really just needs a good once over. I have my two toddlers in the car. We can do this. Only 15 minutes. We wait for a return call so I can take my dog to the door. 4:20 rolls around. The lady next to me in the lot hasn't had her dog returned to her yet so I figure I'll give them another ten and call to see where we are at. 4:30 and an emergency arrives. I overhear a little, they seem to believe they had an appointment but the office says no. The lady is beside herself with her daughter and husband, their little pup needs to be put down. They finally get them to see their dog. My heart was breaking for them, no way I was going to bug the office now, this takes priority. 4:40 rolls around, no call yet so I call to check in on a time estimate, mentioning I knew that had an emergency on their hands so no worries, just to get an idea of the wait left. Put on hold for a long time. They want to reschedule me to next week. Wait, what? You know I'm in the parking lot, right? And I've been here since 4:05? She tells me about calling when I arrive. Yep, check your VM, I did. If you arent going to answer your phone, but require patients to call when they arrive, you should either religiously check your VM, note on the door to call ad nauseum until someone answers, or have a dedicated check in vm box. And you can see me out here. Hi! Silver van, been here for ages. Puts me on hold again to talk to Benavides. Now 4:55. We are closed, we cant see you today. No, you close at 5. I have been here almost an hour. For my 4:20 appt. Nope, doc wont stay after this euthanasia. That is some really effing bad business practices there. But they can reschedule me for tomorrow. Ah well, thats fantastic. Cuz I REALLY need to give Benavides a chance to treat me like crap again. Receptionist was apologetic but never took any responsibility. Office manager wasn't in. Benavides would not speak to me. My father loves Dr. Simpson, can't speak to him, but Benavides should be shown the door and their reception practices need an overhaul. Who the eff treats a client like that? You, your dog, your time. None of it matters. Got an appointment? Not if she makes you wait until they close. Please spare yourself and go somewhere else. Their concern,compassion and the way they treat your animals is unheard of Brought our Elderly dog there who in three days went from enjoying life,playing,eating, a total joy we had for years to crying,could not walk,wouldnt eat,had fever,horrid condition. This Vet told us to bring our dog in (Dr.Eylea helped us) and the genuine caring care they gave our dying dog was beyond belief. Dr. Simpson is the BEST!! I've been going to him for over 14 years now with all my fur-kids. He is sooooooo honest, doesn't run unnecessary tests, doesn't try to up sell you, does't pad out the bill just to make more money off you. He's also extremely knowlegable as he's been at it for so long (and his father was a vet too). He some how became The Vet for boxers. That's how we were introduced as my breeder and all the other breeders I spoke with all went to him. He is very good with all brachycephalic breeds, and himself has French bulldogs (one just finished in 2007). I don't yelp much but recent experiences made me feel like this was one of the few times this was warranted. I am a new dog owner (9 months) and I have been incredibly impressed with Dr Simpson and his group. Dr Simpson has been doing this for a while and you can tell. He is informative and has an incredibly way with my dog, who is maybe the most nervous dog on the planet when it comes to the vet. We had a routine teeth cleaning done and Dr Simpson personally called me at 8pm later that evening to check in and see how my dog was doing. AVOID. I do not understand how his place has so many great reviews. I took my pup here and they were almost 2 hrs behind schedule. They kept saying it would be any minute and then by the time the Vet saw him, The appointment lasted all of 10 minutes. In addition, I tried to give the benefit of the doubt and schedule my pup for surgery, as that was the main reason I went their in the first place. Upon scheduling, they told me they did not know the price and would have Dr. Simpson call me. I called multiple times with no response. When I did finally reach someone, they said they would have him call me immediately and yet, never received a phone call. I ended up canceling my appointment and letting them know the reason. They could care less. Extremely unprofessional and I highly advise you to take your animal elsewhere. So disappointing. read more

Ok folks, here's how it rolls. Dr. Simpson and Elia are amazing. Very sharp and caring. Dr. Simpson has cared for dogs for us and my parents. He did a palette surgery on our pug and it made the biggest difference in his breathing. Dr. Simpson even took him home that night to care for him. Who else does that? No one. Going in, you have to know a couple of things. Prices are low. Really low. With that in mind, lower your expectations on a couple of issues. Parking does suck, 4 spots. Phones ring off of the hook and it takes a long time to get a call back, etc. Don't expect to speak to the main vets. They are busy working on animals all of the time. If they do call you (which happens occasionally, consider it a bonus). The building is old, funky and does smell of urine. Appointment times do run behind. All of that is frustrating, but if you can get past it, the care and expertise by Drs. Simpson and Elia are worth it. They could certainly use a building upgrade and some new furniture and some fabuloso. Anyway, I strongly recommend them, especially if you have a pug, boston, frenchy or bull dog. I can't say enough good things about this office and Dr. Simpson! We adopted an English Bulldog and he had to go to have a palate surgery and neuter before we could officially adopt him. The rescue set him up to go see Dr. Simpson. We live about an hour away from Spring Valley, but we brought him there because of his experience and expertise with Bulldogs. After the surgery, the Dr took our dog home with him to monitor him overnight. Everything went well and our bully recovered from the operations just fine. So a year or so later when he kept having problems with his corkscrew tail and tail pocket, our local vet recommended his tail be removed. We set up a consultation appointment with Dr. Simpson and had him perform the surgery. Once again, the good doctor took our boy home with him to monitor his recovery overnight, and we picked him up the following day. I feel safe bringing my pets to Dr. Simpson, both because of his experience with Bulldogs, and the fact that he personally took my dog home with him after the surgery, both times. He REALLY cares about each dog he sees, that is apparent. I have had a lot of dogs in my life and I have never had a vet bring my dog home with them after an operation. I feel that he truly puts the safety of the animals first, and provides superior service. If you have a bulldog, I would highly recommend bringing him or her to see Dr. Simpson, he is a wonderful man and an amazing doctor! Dr Simpson is the best. No one else will touch our Bullies. We have been seeing him (a lot because they are Bulldogs) for 12 years and four Bulldogs. He has performed more than 12 surgeries on our pups including two ACL on our precious Lola. He has saved the life of our Sophie when she ate her toy whole. I am very disappointed in the lack of service I received from the front desk staff. I called on 7/22/20 and spoke with Linda (sp?) to report that our bulldog was having head tremors and we had taken him to the Animal Emergency Clinic over the weekend and wanted to schedule a follow up appointment with Dr Simpson. I explained I had a video of him when he was having the tremors and offered to send it over. She said she'd check with Dr. Simpson and would let me know if they needed me to email it. At that point I wasn't sure if the emergency clinic had already sent his X-rays and patient chart to them, so she said she would reach out to them to request it. Six days went by and I hadn't heard back so I called again on 7/28/20 and left a message on their general voicemail. Two days later no return call, so I called again. I got a live person this time who said Linda was out to lunch and I should expect a return call in approximately 30 minutes. Again, no return call. I tried calling their office one more time after this but got a busy signal. It's now 8/6 and I still haven't gotten a call from them. I called the Animal Emergency Clinic to see if they ever sent our dog's medical records to this office and they said they had sent it on 7/20/20. I am extremely disappointed that this has left us with no other option than to find another vet office that actually cares about our dog's health. read more

LOVE Dr. Simpson. He is a great vet and took special care of my Frenchie. It's hard to find a vet who is knowledgeable about all things Frenchie. He even took my Frenchie home with him overnight to monitor him after his pallet and nose operations. Dr. Simpson goes above and beyond for his fur patients. NEGATIVES: Staff seems overworked and unhappy and lack good customer service skills. I had a set appointment and arrived on time and signed in. I waited for over 20 minutes in a small, hot crowded lobby and no one that worked there even acknowledged me. I finally went to the front desk to ask what the issue was and the front desk workers looked at me like they had no idea why I was upset. Every time I have been in (3 times in the last 2 weeks), I've overheard the staff complaining about each other in earshot of customers and other staff. Very unprofessional. Overall, the staff there does not seem happy. The lobby and back waiting area were not as clean as I would prefer/expect. Caked up dust on legs of table and floor. Animal hair on waiting chairs. Admittedly, I am a clean freak, though I'd expect the same from a clinic of any kind. Signage is not clearly visible. If you don't know exactly where the building is, you'll miss it. I drove by 3 times. Limited parking in front (3 small spots + 1 handicap). Dislike the sign on the door that states: Leave your dog in the car if it's coughing. Um, NO! I understand they don't want any potentially contagious dog mixing with other dogs, but you NEVER leave a dog, especially a sick one, in a car in the sun in California or anywhere else. Other vet offices I've gone to have a separate waiting area for coughing dogs. Expect to spend twice as much time as expected for your appointment due to LONG wait times (after you check in, after you get in the room, when you're checking out). I mention all of this to give you a heads up. I LOVE Dr Simpson and highly recommend him especially for all things Frenchie. Don't expect a fancy office or lots of perks. Good, kind vet. read more

I decided to come check out this vet because of the awesome reviews it had for a second opinion regarding my sick (but manageable) dog. First issue I had was the long wait. I was called into an examination room and it took 40min for the doctor to come see my dog. No hello no checking in or giving any kind of time frame or even just a simple apology. Dr. Simpson ended up seeing my dog and had great bedside manner and was very informative. He said he'd gather information from my dogs original vet and will come up with a plan and wanted me to call back in a week to see what he decided. I call back a week later and he's too busy to answer and I was told he'd call back. Nothing..ten days past and I call back and he still hadn't come back w a plan. At this point my dogs so sick I had to take him to an ER. So I pretty much took him to this vet drove the total of 50min (back and forth) for no reason and paid the check up amount for nothing. No call from them regarding a "plan," whatsoever. Then two weeks past and I ask if they could forward my insurance company the claim form. I was told by the tech that the doc was still working on it. It took a total of 6 weeks before my insurance company sends me an email that they finally received the claim form. The whole experience was a total waste of time and money. Never again! read more

Dr. Simpson has good bedside manner and knows more than most veterinarians about bulldogs. That having been said, it has been our experience that he tends to feel comfortable performing surgeries a bit beyond his skill set. Our dog had to have his procedure corrected by a specialist. Very unhappy our bullie was subjected to another surgery, not to mention having to pay twice. Making the experience worse: Dr. Simpson was out of town when the corrective surgery was performed and his office staff refused to give the specialist our dog's medical records. Would we return? Despite the archaic facilities, fairly unfriendly/impolite office staff (not the vet techs) and surgery issue: yes. Dr. Simpson is a excellent general veterinarian, but not a board certified specialist in a specific area of practice. If you need a solid provider for routine care (including routine surgeries), choose him. read more

Dr. Simpson is a great vet! I have been taking care of my daughter's dog for years:) Recently, my dog had stage 5 lymphoma and I had to put him down. The staff and Drs., including Dr. Simpson were supportive, caring and compassionate. Dr. Simpson had also treated my dog and boarded him when he was attacked by a much larger dog, and almost died. So far all I can say is holy unorganized! I heard the receptionists say that files will never be where they are supposed to. Heard another assistant tell a client over the phone they misplaced their dogs test results and would call them when they found them. So far even with making appointments it's never been on time. Longest wait time was an hour past my appt time and today it's been 45 minutes past my appt time. PARKING SUCKS! They don't close the doors for privacy and not going to lie some of the front staff probably shouldn't be working with animals since I heard year another one say the only way a dog can get kennel cough is by being boarded in a boarding facility, and another one had no clue what FelV was. Totally not worth bringing my own dogs to, I only come to drop off dogs I work with. read more

This place is great and Dr. Simpson knows what he is doing. He took 1 look at my bully and without me telling him what was really going on, he knew. It was unreal. The wait is a tad long, but worth it. Everyone who comes in there (and works there) is really friendly so when your waiting, your bully's make lots of friends. I love this vet compared the vet I was going to previously. the reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is because the parking is awful and to make an appt, its usually about a week out minimum unless you have a really flexible schedule. There are only 4 parking spots in front of the building and its on a busy street so no street parking, but i tend to sneak a spot at the shopping center next door even when it says I can't-oops. read more

I believed now that the practice is unsafe for my pets' care: I used to drive an hour to take my Great Dane and my other mixed breed dog to see Dr Simpson, and had done so for years since the Great Dane was a puppy . I always had such great, reasonable and compassion service from Dr Simpson, so I continued to make the trek. When Covid hit, the practice of actual pet 'care' was severely compromised due to already existing deficient operational practices. I saw the writing on the wall when I took my mixed breed for a visit and tried to get post-visit call back for some help from Dr Simpson. No response from Dr Simpson or the practice at all. Couldn't a technical even respond??? But a few months later with thoughts of the wonderful care I used to get from Dr Simpson, in April 2021 when my Great Dane had been have vomiting for two days, I of course tried to get to see Dr Simpson to get her the help she needed, but he was booked. I regretfully opted to let her be seen by a new practitioner there, who just assessed my dog on a loading dock. Rather than review her history on how she'd been cared for in the past, she just prescribe anti-nausea medication, treating a symptom and not the cause. Unknown to me when subscribed, this medication had a side effect of hyper salivation, which only exacerbated her condition where she continued to spit up water saliva all weekend. When I called on Monday concerned about the medication and her now continuing 4 days of no food and still spitting up water, I did not get a return call. I called again to ask for a call back, and also I inquired where prior messages I'd left specifically for Dr Simpson actually went. I was told that they were just tacked to a message board for him which he is apparently too busy to read. Finally the vet who saw her on the loading dock finally return my calls, just to only suggest that I make a follow up appointment later with Dr Simpson, all after describing the horrible experience and condition of my pet after five days of continuing illness. I again left a message specifically to have Dr Simpson call me, but no response. I have an expectation that any decent practitioner who cares about animals or people would respond with some more helpful advice or concern after hearing that a dog had been without food and water from vomiting for five days. I was left to figure out on my own what to do next. By Thursday my Great Dane was in emergency, internal bleeding and collapse esophagus from spitting up for so may days, 20 pounds of weight loss and passed away by Sunday. A healthy dog, dead prematurely due to lack of concern by the individuals charged with pet care at Spring Valley Veterinary Clinic; and my error in judgement thinking I could still get the same great care she had gotten in prior years from Dr Simpson, despite the writing on the wall. While Dr Simpson may still treat the pets and their owners in right front of him with quality service, a practice that cannot function with something a simple as a timely call back and access to follow up post visit care shouldn't be trusted to care for anyone's pet. Otherwise, it is just an emergency triage clinic. Based on my overall experience, I have to believe that Dr Simpson has lost sight of what's happening at his practice. In addition to the concerns I've mentioned, operationally it is deficient. And quite typically, even when I called today to leave a message before they opened to request that they stop emailing me since their unsubscribe link did not work, that was a failure also. When told by the recording to leave a message after the beep, the beep never engaged, so I tried a few more times with no luck. Finally, I called again after they opened when a live person answered to ask that they remove me from their email, explaining that each email I got was just a reminder of the death of my pet which occurred due to their the poor care I received from them in April. The person on the phone could did not even acknowledge or show concern for what I expressed and simply said she would remove me from their list. Yes, I am still shocked at the loss of my beloved pet all the months later, but need to express in this review that It is risky to use Spring Valley Veterinary Clinic since they can't be relied unless you're not speaking to them face to face. I understand that Covid impacted a lot of businesses capacity to operate, but I recommend you considered the risk involved in how any practice operates when it comes to ensure the well being of your pet.
