I bought Spot's accident and illness policy for my 10-year-old dog and completed their optional Waiting Period Health Assessment -- an exam Spot offers so the waiting period can be waived. My vet performed a full physical exam, certified on Spot's own form that my dog had no signs or symptoms of cancer, and submitted it. Getting that waiver approved took roughly two months of repeated follow-up. During phone calls, I was discouraged from pursuing it. Spot later acknowledged in writing to the California Department of Insurance that there had been "a delay in the internal processing and application of the waiver" and that it "did not meet our service expectations." It was only approved after I filed a regulatory complaint. Routine bloodwork drawn on the day of that exam came back abnormal the following day -- after coverage was active. That workup led to a cancer diagnosis. Spot denied every related claim. Their reasoning changed three times. The first denial claimed my vet's cancer assessment was documented on the pre-coverage date; it was timestamped the day after coverage began, and Spot's own EOB lists the test with the later service date. That denial also said cancer was excluded as an "incurable condition" -- a term that appears nowhere in my policy, where cancer treatment is a listed benefit. After I pushed back, both claims quietly disappeared from their letters. Their final position is that an abnormal lab value is itself a "symptom," even while conceding in writing that my dog "did not display outward signs at that time." What I'd want to know before buying: the waiver they market as protection did not protect the one thing it appeared to. If bloodwork is drawn during the waiting period and results arrive later, they may treat the condition as pre-existing regardless of the exam they approved. Ask directly how they handle that before you enroll. I have filed complaints with the California Department of Insurance. Keep every document, note every timestamp, and get everything in writing. read more

Everything is "pre-existing." Customer service is difficult to understand until you're speaking with a rep to cancel the policy. What a waste of money. I appealed some decisions, which took over a month for a response -- and it was coincidentally after I'd finally sent an email asking for status. I thought it was going to be decent since it was offered through my work, but it wasn't. I went to the BBB website to enter a review, and it turns out all the bad reviews are within the last year. I actually got reimbursed for some dental work that had to be done and didnt even realize it would be covered at the time. One year later, she is now 4, without any issues, never filed a claim. $300, first year, now $465. This madness has to stop....everyone is gouging. We have enough set aside $ in case something "catastrophic" happens. We have canceled. One of the checks for reimbursement takes 20 - 30 days to arrive! It is day 20 still no chekc... NOT 7 - 10 days.... a supervisor told me checks often do not arrive.... ??? they have to reissue them and there is no way of tracking them. Turns out my plan does not treat injuries? But I am paying for "Wellness checks?" So how do they define wellness checks if its not "injury?" I am really disappointed in this agency. They seem great on the surface but major problems. You also cannot just change plans you have to completely close your current account and then create a new one with a 14 day gap. Spot Pet Insurance insidiously charged me 1/3 of what I was paying monthly extra on top of my monthly fee without notifying me. This is how much they increased my rate. When I called they said they did notify me through an email on 7/16/ 2026. The email sender or subject line were not titled Spot Pet Insurance according to them. Apparently it would have been from some random group called the Hartford group ....which why would I know that has anything to do with Spot Pet Insurance. Also, I NEVER received an email from the Hartford group at all, so I don't even know what they're talking about. I searched my emails. I asked them to gove me back the extra money that I spent for the last two months that they charged me without telling me ,and they said "we can't do that.". These people are conniving, and I do not trust them. On top of this, they have never helped me with a single thing I've paid for through my vet. They have a high deductible and I have no idea why I'm using them so I'm canceling right now. read more

If Yelp allowed 0 stars, that's exactly what I would give Spot Pet Insurance. My claim for my dog Alex was denied twice, even after providing all the medical records they asked for. They took forever to process my claim, kept asking for more documents, and never contacted my vet directly for anything. If you don't spoon-feed them every detail, your claim gets rejected. I switched from Healthy Paws because of Spot's advertising, but Healthy Paws was 100× better. They actually contact the vet, help you when something's missing, and process claims fast. I'm leaving Spot and returning to Healthy Paws. Switching was a big mistake. read more

I would give SPOT no stars at all. Their website doesn't work - impossible to upload records for claims. I ened up calling them and was told to just email the reacords, I did so. They kept on sayong they didn't get the records, but each of the half dozen times I called and spoke to a rep about it they assured me that yes, the records had been recieved and the claim was being processed. Low and behold weeks later I get an email saying the claim was processed - they covered exactly ZERO on a $900. = claim. The reason - they said they did not have any records! I initially thought Spot Pet Insurance was a great alternative to pet insurance I had with my previous employer. Spot charged $134 per month for the same policy I subsequently got with Nationwide Pet Insurance. Nationwide is approximately $35-$36 dollars. I felt like I was robbed by Spot! What a crying shame! Spot took forever to reimburse me for claims, where Nationwide took just a few days. The other issue was when I cancelled the policy, the agent told me that I would see a full refund since I cancelled it on the billing date... How about I had to wait on the line for nearly an hour because the initial agent could not give me any details other than word-salad (a bunch of generalities). How about I would never have seen the full refunded amount because they did an adjusted billing which basically pro-rated my monthly fee for 1 day. Why did I have to stay on the phone for an hour and neither the original agent nor the manager/supervisor could JUST SAY THAT?! Run to Nationwide Pet Insurance, people! We have paid for Premium Spot pet insurance for a year now since we got our puppy. We thought it would be helpful for spaying and various problems puppies usually have. After a year of payint $60/month I now have enough data to say confidently that Spot reimburses us less than 30% on all of our vet bills. To be specific on $1060.00 of vet bills Spot has reimbursed us exactly $325.00. 12 months at $60 cost us $720. We have saved exactly nothing by using Spot so I tried to cancel today over the phone. I was honest and told the representative that I did not feel that it was worth what we were paying. Then I was put on hold for nearly 20 minutes while the representative checked back with me saying there was nobody available to cancel my policy. I then asked the rep if she could cancel my policy if we no longer had the pet and she said yes that was all she was authorized to do. So I told her my pet ran away and she finally canceled my policy within 30 seconds. If I were to be able to go back in time I would have purchased the very cheapest policy or none at all. read more

One of the worst pet insurance experiences I've ever had. My claim was submitted the same day my dog was treated, and Spot Pet Insurance waited over a week just to contact my veterinarian. Their website says claims are processed within 2-7 business days, but in reality, it takes 2-4 weeks or even longer. They denied my claim saying there was "no SOP" (soap notes), even though not every veterinarian provides that kind of documentation. Instead of helping me resolve the issue, they just rejected the claim. Their customer service calls don't help at all -- the representatives are from overseas, very hard to understand, and they seem unfamiliar with their own policies. They also advertise Amazon gift cards and other promotions that never arrive. The whole process felt misleading, slow, and poorly managed. I wouldn't recommend this insurance -- it's been a frustrating and disappointing experience from start to finish. read more

They made us jump thru hoops for a month asking for All kinds of paperwork for claim, but then telling us more than a month later that the claim is not covered because we were within the 14 day grace period they NEVER told us about. I just switched over to Spot Pet Insurance in January. My dog had an ear infection (first one since owning him in 9 years) and was seen in urgent care. I submitted the claim and it was denied stating his first ear infection was a pre existing condition due to him receiving an allergy injection in 2024. My dog has never been diagnosed as having allergies but now this insurance company states allergies and ear infections are the same and therefore the claim is denied. All Spot Insurance wants is their monthly payments and will come up with any excuse not to cover a claim. Very disappointed in moving over to this company. read more

I've been a great member for 2 years and have always paid my premiums on time, but the moment I submitted a major claim, they completely failed me. I submitted an authentic, direct invoice from my vet. Because the bill had split charges--an initial charge and an additional charge from the same visit making up the rest of the total--Spot's claims department lazily called the vet, only verified the initial amount, and immediately slapped a "Determination of Fraud" on my account and canceled my policy. They didn't even bother to look at the final, itemized ledger or reconcile the total amount. Instead of doing a basic billing reconciliation, their immediate default is to call their paying customers liars. I have provided the complete ledger and bank statements proving the full cleared payment. I will be taking my business to an insurance company that actually values its customers and handles claims with basic competency. Save yourself the stress and the insulting accusations. I paid for the Gold plan that was supposed to include a dental cleaning. Dental cleaning was estimated over $1000, but the Spot dental coverage is only $100. I also recently submitted my first claim for an emergency vet bill. It's been over 10 days since I submitted the claim and they haven't even looked at it yet. The app and website also glitch when you upload of photos or documents. I kept getting an error #500 Message. Super frustrating. Healthy Paws was a much better pet insurance. read more

HORRIBLE!!!! They literally covered NOTHING out of all the emergency care my two pups needed last month. WTF have I been paying for the last few months?!?! I submitted a claim under my Platinum plan with additional wellness coverage for reimbursement of approximately $1,788.00 in veterinary expenses. This claim was denied in full. Based on the policy coverage for accidents and illnesses, this condition and the resulting treatment fall within covered events. The diagnosis was not the result of neglect, and the treatment was not elective or preventative--it was necessary medical intervention for a covered condition. The denial of this claim appears to be inconsistent with the stated terms and intent of the policy. I am requesting a formal review and reversal of the claim denial, with reimbursement of eligible expenses in accordance with the policy. Do NOT use SPOT. I finally canceled my coverage with them after 2 years because there's always "some excuse" why they can't provide coverage for my pug. I finally had the last straw today. I called a couple weeks ago before taking my pug to a vet dentist and the SPOT licensed agent told me his extractions would be covered 80%. They found a chip on her tooth (not a crack) when they were doing a cleaning and didn't do anything about it as it was something that didn't need work. SPOT denied it as a cleaning. UM - that's what she was in for and I paid to have a cleaning done....as well as the coverage for that. I canceled the insurance and will post this all over social media. I just changed to Spot insurance on September and unfortunately my dog had an incident on December. she had a very bad pain in the neck area . After second opinion from a Neurologist we went to surgery process . It's cost $12000 and Spot paid 70% ; the claim went very smoothly. Immoral and unethical practice. I had both of my dogs insured with this company, paying $350 per month for one and $150 per month for the other. When one of my dogs passed away, this terrible company wasted no time in increasing the premium for my remaining dog, even though it hadn't even been a full year. They began overcharging my account two months before the actual renewal date. When I called to find out why, I was connected to someone in the Philippines who struggled with English, making the whole process exhausting. I've been with this company for five years. They used to be great, but now they're openly ripping people off and forcing customers to deal with overseas representatives who can barely communicate. I took him to our vet, who ran bloodwork and did some tests, deciding that he'd eaten something weird and would be fine (which he was). The vet (35+ experience and awesome) and I tried numerous times to dispute the claim - his bloodwork was clear and he's never been ill (!) a day in his life but they denied the claim regardless. I signed up for Spot Pet Insurance (wish I'd read the Yelp reviews first) and have used it twice. My claims were denied both times. They claimed my dog's ear infections were due to allergies. His breed, Shih Tzu, is prone to ear infections for various reasons. But they denied the whole bill (office visit? flea prevention meds?, etc). And I pay for the higher priced plan! Why have insurance if they're going to deny every bill and every charge in the bills. My recommendation is to look for other, better insurance for your pet! read more

Beware of this insurance! If there is any type of pre-existing condition they will deny any new claim even if the current illness is completely unrelated to the pre-existing condition. My dog almost died from anesthesia and needed medication and monitoring by the vet for 8 hours before he recovered. Spot Pet Insurance tried to state it was from a stomach issue he had months prior. Our vet even explained in the notes that the anesthesia reaction had nothing to do with any prior issues. They will look for any reason not to pay a claim. read more
